They could take this even farther by making the knees and elbows have full range of motion in both directions and center mounting the feet. Or they could give it 4 arms and a face on both sides!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. It's cool that it moves in a way which is efficient for a robot, rather than trying to perfectly mimic human movement. Then again, I was also imagining Robocop fighting this thing, because I'm a big dork.

@@Create-The-Imaginableeven if it is something that is thermite resistant, which idk if there is a metal that won’t melt/warp past 4500 F. Even if it was some metal that wasn’t effected by the heat. The liquid metal would damage or destroy plenty of internal components. Thermite turns into liquid iron. And it would mangle that thing.

The 360-degree articulation of its joints is impressive. To me, it's not unsettling at all. Envision the commercial, industrial, and eventual consumer applications for such a versatile robot. I believe there's no need for humanoid robots to be constrained by the same range of motion as humans.

@@accueil750 Nuclear bombs can't build and improve themselves. And nobody wants to drop them and kill themselves too. But an army or tireless soldiers that can outrun, outsurveil, outshoot, and outthink humans? That can be used over and over again? That can kill people and preserve property? That don't question orders? We're a lot closer to the Terminator reality than you might think.

From a utility standpoint it’s probably useful that it can turn 360, imagine it moves boxes from one shelf to another behind and all it has to do is rotate instead of stepping around to turn. Presentation was hilarious, but its definitely a flex.

Boston Dynamics is showing that they moved away from hydraulic actuators and managed to create a robot with electric motors, which are more flexible and controllable. On the goodbye video of the old version they showed a lot of cases where pumps and pipes were exploding and now they show the versatility of the new version, which can be more compact and dynamic.

I think the fact that it is an omni robot makes it so much more versatile as you do not need to be facing any specific direction to complete tasks, it is a really smart move

Also, no hydraulics that can rip or burst during operation. Provided a clean enough environment for the joints to not clog up (or appropriate protection of those parts) this may also prove more reliable in the long term.

Being able to rotate every joint 360 degrees makes it more practical for changing direction and maneuvering, instead of having the robot actually take a bunch of steps to walk in a circular motion.

@@thecuberabbit286 The fact their robots do what they do without AI is a positive, not a negative. They have objectively more stable behavior and unbelievably fine-tuned control systems. This is hard to achieve with AI.

It’s actually fascinating that robot learns to stand up and walk like that. Their joints don’t have the same limitations like ours. So that’s more efficient way to move around.

The reasoning for 360 rotational joints is because that is a lot simpler and more efficient than taking more steps to turn around more like a human. The CEO made the point that just because it is humanoid doesn't mean it has to be limited to human-like movement

This robot needs to run as fast as Humans running for their life without falling down and should be able to navigate difficult battlefield ground. I think the reason for the 360 degree movement is that it has the capability to walk normally, but it also has options to move around in areas that no human being can move. I honestly think the way it moves is cool and emphisis the fact this is a Robot, not a human.
