I've got one of the first Brown tree cutters made. The gear box is only rated at 92 hp and 6' width. Interestingly enough, the blade carrier is 1" square instead of round like the newer ones. I'm the only one who operates it. I've cut 40+ acres heavily infested with honey locust, gum, ash, and other species, including oak and pine. The only tractor I have for it is a 4450 John Deere at 140 hp, so I have to be careful with the lower hp gear box and pto shafts and output shafts to the blade carrier. The tractor has long axles and dual hubs for dual wheels which causes problems, especially if I'm thinning some pine plantations with lots of naturals. I have cut acre after acre of trees 15' to 20' to 30'+. Many times I've had half dozen to a dozen trees feeding cutter at same time with butt diameters of 2" to 4" to 6". When I get to an 8" + tree, I have to be very careful. I've actually dropped honey locusts with 12" to 18" butts. With my old rig, I clean cutter off very well every few hours to check for loose or broken bolts and any structural damage such as cracked welds. I don't run it until all is repaired. I also sharpen blades as much as possible. Sharp blades cut cleaner. Sharp blades extend life of machine since it takes less horsepower to sever the trees. This adds protection to the mechanical system of the drive lines and gear box system down to the blade carrier which weighs 400 to 500 pounds. Another important item is the unit's overload protection or clutch pack. If they don't slip and slip smoothly, something is going to break. I adjust clutches as much as several times an hour depending on if they continue to slip. My Brown lacks an over running clutch, so I have to sit the unit on the ground to stop rotation. Otherwise, it will wear out the pto clutch brake on the tractor. It's fun cutting the pines and gums and other softer woods. Oaks and hickory are another story. I like your machine. Thought I'd share my enjoyment. One thing worth mentioning is that you need to watch saplings or larger coming at you like a javelin. I've had a few times when they would come out of nowhere and try to pick my pocket if you know what I mean. It keeps you on your toes cause I'm pretty sure those suckers don't feel good if they skewer you like you do a wild hog. Thanks. Mike Compton, Linden, AL

I have a Marvel Tree Cutter which is basically the first Brown tree cutter. It has a square blade carrier and offset blades. I just took blades off to replace them with straight blades. Have you replaced yours yet?

yah my father in law had one of those, that thing is Crazy what it can do, he ended up puttin logger tires on the back of that tractor he used soo that when it would throw large limbs and blades he would stop loosing his rear tires soo much... he would hit some stuff soo big it would sound like a bomb goin off when it'd hit it but it'd just keep on goin but dang that 300ft sure is no joke stuff was flyin pretty good

That's a bad cutter reminds me of the old sidewinder rubber tire drive cutter had no gearbox used tire to drive blades no good cutting grass but was hell on brush.

Long ago I commented about a Brown Tree Cutter - That little 60" 540 PTO version os a TOY compared to a 72" 1000 PTO unit. The big one will cut those pines in that tree farm. The things are awesome tools of destruction.

I had a 6' Browns tree cutter on an old John Deer that had been rigged with a reinforced cage and heay duty top to handle brush and widow makers. The real secret was a belly pan with an oil port to accommodate oil change when necessary. I STARTED OUT IN REVERSE but soon found that I could use my bucket to lay just about everything I wanted to clear over and let the Browns do it's work as I moved forward. Larger trees, like pine wold spring back up into the blades as I moved over it. Anything I missed could be mulched on a return lap. Although I had 4 wheel drive I saved the bucket and the four wheel setting to get me out of trouble if I happened up on a stump or got into the swamp which accounted for about 2 25% of the land. The brown is one hell of a piece of equipment. The safest place to be when the deck is engaged is operating the tractor.

I think the BROWN brush hog is probably the best one out there, because it has the bladesstationary on that huge flywheel . The rest that I've seen are, have small blades that flop around so when they hit something they bounce back. But none have a flywheel and the gear box is a joke . The BROWN is built well. I prefer the rotary drum mulch head on a tracked skid steer.
