Definitely the mini, I remember modifying one in the 70s, I even chopped the roof (always a hot rodder), to lower the centre of gravity, (not really, it just looks cool). I had great fun trying to keep up with 'proper' cars, just like in the saloon car racing of the day.

I’m across the pond in the U.S., and your videos and ideas are the best! Started slot car racing in 1961 (I was 13) with the original Aurora ‘Model Motoring” roughly HO vibrator cars, but quickly got into much better (at the time) 1/32 Strombecker and Cox 1/32 cars and track. Been with mostly 1/32 ever since. Just watched your great video on the 8’ x 2’ portable track, which I’m going to build when my garage gets warmer… thanks for the great vid. As for Escort Mk. 1 vs. Mini Cooper, PLEASE do both. The short wheelbase Min is fun but fiddly, both in build and performance, and the Escort is the perfect size. Too bad it’s so hard to find (especially in the U.S.) a 1/32 Cortina! Thanks again for your great videos! Barton Spencer Brown

Interesting project. The choice of car will depend on what you want to achieve. The Mini will be more of a challenge and I think will be more glamourous to many, but ultimately its performance will be limited by its dimensions. It'll always be short in length and tall in height no matter what magic you do to the innards. It's the length that matters more, I think, as I found out with my Teamslot Lancia Stratos - a fine looking car with a strong motor (and dodgy wheels out of the box), but always twitchy no matter how fettled. And my own Scaley Mini (red C007 with black interior/chassis) is also a bit edgy to drive quickly (to say the least). The Escort has the advantage of better dimensions and more space, so will be easier and will almost inevitably be faster. So for me, the Escort edges my vote, but I'll watch and enjoy the videos no matter what. Oh, and my brother also put the F1 wheels on the back of his Escort back in the day. He also flared out the rear arches more using filler - my first sight of slot car customisation! We then evened things out by wrapping the rear wheels in Sellotape so that we were essentially doing ice racing with no tyre studs. Not fast, but quite fun!

I have an original 1970’s mk1 escort Mexico (also have a Porsche 911) which I fitted the F1 axle/big wheels on with blue tack on the chassis to keep it on the track 😂 The best car I have a Datsun 240z in completely original condition.

It has to be the Mini for me. I have 5 different ones, Mini on an Amato 3D chassis, Clubman on a brass chassis, Clubman on a PCB chassis, Mini on a carbon fibre chassis...and a resin 3D printed MiniSprint on a 3D chassis with flexible side pans. ...plus at least two others awaiting a future project 😎

Definitely the mini!, would love to see a 'super cooper' :-) and do you have the lexan glass and interiors available for the clubmans? i recently found some ebay clubmans, same as the white one you have, but its sister orginal yellow and red clubmans, would be cool with your interior lightweuight mods. :-) Can you list off the kit bag contents for the mods? keen to do similar to a pair of red 70's coopoers that had their electricsx die (very old internals,)

Hey Rob. More how to have great fun and be happy for very little money? I have ready access to my red Mini 1275 GT which I have been inspired just now to 'unbury'. It is a ringer for yours only with white side stripes and 'Ford GT' style sill stripes and a printed 'No 1'. For some reason this example has a black and not a yellow crown gear? It is in very good working condition and with one teenage 'boy racer' owner (me) from new back in 1976 and I best recall hasn't been run in anger since the early 1980s. It is yours if you want it and you can either keep it as is (as we know you are sentimental about these things) or else you can offer it up to your skunk works for the usual 'value added'? I don't want anything more in return from you than that which you already give, and for free, which is your time, your kindness and your lifetime's skillsets and experience. I can see your Cwmbran postal address on your site and so let me know if you want it? (I'll need to give something to Dave at SlotR too now - lol).
