New Caledonia unrest: French forces launch 'major operation'

French forces have launched what they're calling a 'major operation' to clear roads linking New Caledonia's capital to its main airport.
At least six people have been killed and hundreds injured in the French Pacific territory in the past week.
The mayor of the capital Noumea says the city is besieged.
Thousands of indigenous Kanak people have been protesting against changes to local election rules.
Critics say the reforms favour French nationals.
Jimmy Naouna is a Member of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front Political Bureau.
He says the chaos that has unfolded over the past week is regrettable but they will continue to demand their independence from France.

Not only were there 3 votes where the answer was no to independence (the majority of voters were Kanak), but what's more, do you believe they live on reserves? They live like any French person, have the same rights, they have priority over high-ranking administrative positions, they have free medical aid without even having to work while the rest of the population is not entitled to it, and much more, they are very far from being an oppressed people. Additionally, don't forget that there are also families of other ethnicities (not just French) who have lived there for several generations, and they should abandon their native land? Freedom through arson and murder is a fantasy. New Caledonia followed an agreed path with three referendums and independence was rejected in each case. Now the authorities are rounding up the promoters of violence and they will be charged and judged for their crimes. New Caledonia will now follow standard democratic processes where one citizen = 1 vote. Peace will return and criminals will go to trial in the courts, as is the case in any democratic country. France will continue to financially support New Caledonia.

1. New Caledonia was included in the UN decolonisation list in 1946. This was reconfirmed by the UN Decolonisation Committee on 28 October 1987. The French response on both occasions was to claim it was an integral region of France. But when it came to the EU, France claimed New Caledonia was NOT an integral region of France. NC does not use the Euro, it uses the Pacific Franc. New Caledonia does NOT vote for MEPs, and is NOT represented in the European Parliament. The Schengen open border agreement does NOT apply to New Caledonia. Kanaks have no rights to work in the EU. 2. The French Socialist Government of Mitterand promised and prepared a bill in April 1985 to move New Caledonia towards independence by 1986 through a referendum. This did not take place. 3. At the 1988 Paris talks the Matignon Accord was reached, providing the broad framework of a ten year transition plan leading to the decolonisation of New Caledonia. This did not take place and let to riots. 5. Between 1990 and 2013, the population of New Caledonia grew from 169,000 to 256,000. During that 23 year period the New Caledonia birthrate dropped from 17.53 per thousand to just 8.72 per thousand, almost exactly half. This means means that most of the 87,000 population increase were external arrivals, mostly from France. 6. By the time of the 1998 electoral embargo the population of NC had risen from 169,000 (1990) to 210,000 (2000). The birthrate on the island had fallen from 17.53 per thousand to 15.25 per thousand. Most of those extra 40,000 arrivals were French voters. 7. The infamous electoral embargo applies to arrivals post 1998. Retuning arrivals are not subject to that rule. If you were in NC pre 1998 you can vote. It only applies if you never set foot in NC before 1998.

There is a mistake early in the video, nearly all people in NC, Kanak included, are French Nationals. Citizens self declare their belonging to an “ethnic group” and as of 2019 census 24% declare themselves “European”. This percentage is decreasing. The growing groups are mixed races, South East Asians and non Kanak Melanesian. These groups are in majority opposed to independence, they do not feel that Kanak leadership is a safe option for them.
