Still have the one issued to me in 1969. It was new and used frequently in and around the jungles of Vietnam and in the firebase I operated from. The knife is in remarkable condition especially for it's age and use. But again, I am fanatical about the care of my equipment and gear.

When I graduated Boot Camp [MCRD SD] in 3/74, an older Marine Buddy presented me with one of those steel ''Buddy Knives''. I made the mistake of opening all the blades at once, and the back spring broke. I gave it back to him, and I guess he got it replaced at the PX. I was lucky I was allowed to keep my Champion SAK in basic training. Came in handy in Second Phase.

I have a 1997 that was given to me when I was promoted to Corporal. Never used it in my official duties over my career as I allways pocket carried a Spyderco Delica. I put it in one of my my tackle boxs, rarely cut anything with it over the next 18yrs.... and it stayed there until I put in my service keepsake box few years ago along with my orginal Spyderco Delica and last issued Gerber MP600.... Luckily the Camillus is still mint condition.... Orginally I felt like these were just old Govt issued junk knives and it really meant very little to me until much later when I found out the MGySgt that gave it to me when he pinned my NCO stripes on and whom I respected with the utmost had passed away. He was a great Marine and mentor to young Marines.... better than I ever became but I learned alot from him that I still use in my life and try to pass down to others to this day. I also have an orginal Kingston from WW2 that was in the basement of my grandparents home... Grandpa and few of Grandmas brothers all served during WW2 so it was most likely one of theirs. My Dad said he doesn't remember ever having one issued when he was in during Vietnam but today it'd be cool if he had and we had 3 generations of these actually issued during our service.

When I was in the US Air Force in the 80s and 90's these were in our tool boxes, we all had own knives or multi-tools on us, the knives were there for cutting boxes etc, the main reason one was in our tool boxes was it accounted for so no tools got left on the aircraft, we always did a tool box check before and after working on the airplanes and the tools were marked to go with a specific tool box. During my time in the Military I used Buck knives, Leatherman tools along with SOG, Gerber and Cold Steel knives I moved to Victorinox when I got stationed in England and Germany and I still use SAK to this day.

Mine is stamped 1984 and the only Camilus I own. I use mine all the time and it's a pretty decent pocket knife. Everything sharpens very well and holds an edge well enough to justify carrying and using it daily. You can buy new ones made by Marbles but they are trash, not even worth the ten or twelve bucks they go for.

My grandfather was an electrician for the Air Force from 1963 to 1994. He served for 31 years and was issued one of these knives in 1988. I was fortunate enough to inherit it when he passed away.

That is nice. Colonial Knife Co. currently produces these knives for the military but I don't think they date them.

These were issued to cadets at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. They were called "Youngie" knives because your freshman year is your Youngie year. You you were required to have it, along with a book of matches and change for a quarter on your person at all times, to make up your "Youngie" gear. If you didn't, it meant push-ups as punishment. I still have my 1984 stamped knife.

You might want to display the knife in the packaging with the blades closed. I noticed seeing older models have broken back springs as you mentioned.👍

Seen a lot of Marble versions of this design & assumed they were the originators from WW II. Seems like it took decades for US mfg. to figure out how temper the stainless steel blades. I've always preferred various carbon steel versions over stainless but there are many stainless steels tempered/hardened so well these days to choose from, they now dominate my collection.

Honestly, you're better off tracking down a used, vintage one on eBay; instead. FAR better quality. My 1982 version is in excellent shape.

So this is the US copy of the swiss army knife? Could you compare the two modells, Barlow, or any of you guys? Ii guess the american version is not very common in Europe
@HootOwl513Ай бұрын
It's more closely copied from the Boy Scouts of America, Official Scout Knife. Same blade configuration but textured metal sides, whereas the Scout Knife had bone [later brown plastic] scales and chromed brass end caps.

You mean the swiss Soldier issued 1961-2008, still available as the Victorinox Pioneer. I'm not sure that it isn't the other way around though, the old GI knife with this toolset was out long before 1961. But the Swiss Soldier/Pioneer is better.

@LarsSmith-rv4otАй бұрын
@@MrBarlow I think so though don't remember for sure. I actually didn't buy it. Crazy story. I bought several music cds and a couple vhs tapes off ebay from a seller in Canada. Apparently the box got busted open and some of the cd's were damaged and some missing. Inside the damaged/taped box was a couple good cd's, some busted cd's, broken cd case pieces and 3 Camillus 2000 knives and a couple other things that I didn't buy. I sold 2 of the knives to co-workers for $6.00 a piece and kept one for myself. Actually, thought the ebay seller just threw some stuff in the box but really the postal place probably just dumped some extra loose stuff in there. Anyway, that was probably around that time, can't remember.
