I saw it last night and enjoyed it. If you go back and watch Dallas's first feature film from 2017, The Resurrection of Gavin Stone, you can tell from watching The Best Christmas Pageant Ever that he has grown a lot as a filmmaker. Best Christmas Pageant is an all-around better film than Gavin Stone is and feels, for a lack of a better way of putting it, like a "real movie" and not something pumped out by the Christian media machine. In regard to the mother and why we never see her, I haven't read the book that the film is based on but I did see a comment that someone left on another video where the commenter said that the book also doesn't talk much about the mother. I suspect that the intention here is not get bogged down in the Herdman's backstore and WHY they are the way they are and it's also to keep the focus squarely on the kids.
