I am an experienced camper/survivalist with Sickle Cell Anemia. So the idea of an unbreakable walking stick is a great find for people like me.The irony is that I am watching this video while in the hospital. Thanks for the video!

I have a three year old cold steel walkabout, love it. I keep behind my door at home and in my van when I go out. My regular walking cane is deadly but I have developed a system of strikes with this walking stick that gives me more confidence. I am 70, broke my back in service, lost left leg in mc wreck. I figured that an old Vietnam vet can not and will not be a victim.

I bought the Dragon Cane. I had a near death fall, spent 3 1/2 months in the hospital. Okay, I broke everything. So, I hated the CVS, and Chinamart crap, so I bought the CS Dragon Cane. Well, one day (I'm 61, and was in Chuck Norris shape) I'm out at the local university wearing my NRA hat. Some young buck slapped it off the back of my head. I turned around, and he kept coming running his mouth..until I took the head of my cane, and the dragon teeth bit his tool bag REAL hard. He bled, and took stitches. Now this old an earned everyone's respect. To be completely honest, I've been a martial artist since 1967, but I'm in NO shape toruna anymore. That fall F**ked me up pretty bad. The Then Shin is an awesome solid walking stick..a most formidable weapon too! Thanks so much for your time and video.

I teach cane defense, that axe head is too long for you, but if that's how you like it that's what matters. The video you mentioned about the Segal stick might have been mine, when used correctly as a weapon, the handle does get in the way of your wrist and interfere with swinging it correctly.

I agree it isn't the wrong way on but it for use on a boken, is completely in the way it makes recovery so heavy also, that alone is enough without the snagging on the wrists with upward paddle slashes ect...

Oh, that Axe Head Cane is the Pain Cane for sure! You hook someone with that thing it hurts like a Mo-Fo. Was browsing around and saw United Cutely has a knock off of the Ka-Bar TDI Self Defense Cane ($100!) in this material for about $40-ish. Also very pointy but more of a shepards crook traditional style. I'm not old enough for on of those. Will stick to the AHC.

I really enjoyed this review. I have had 13 knee surgeries so I know a bit about needing a cane. I had a nice Irish blackthorn but it got stolen from me at a restaurant, you know one of those places where at dinner hour they darken the place a bit to make it feel romantic etc, anyway, some idiot from the next table took it form me and by the time I was aware they had been gone for 15 minutes or more. Anyway, I am 5-11 and the perfect height cane is 36 inches for me, the way the medical professionals tell me to use it.(use one that is too long and you screw up your shoulders over time) So one of these can be good for guys into the 6 ft range.

The long one. Use it to plunge it into the solar plexus or sideways between the ribs(pain). The opponents strike zone had just shrunk dramatically. The length of the arms plus the length to the stick is about 7.5-8.5 feet. He'll grab at it so the edges at the bottom need to be sharpened.

I have a shepherd's crook style rattan cane. light, decent when going on hikes and the knees act up. only problem is the lacquer on the handles can get slick with damp hands, not great after applying sunscreen. little hands shock with all day use due to fibrous material absorbing most of it. expensive due to being hand made. Thinking of purchasing one of those sticks in the video.

I have had 13 knee surgeries on my right knee over the years. At a medical aids store, of all places, I found and bought an authentic, from Ireland, blackthorn walking stick back when I was in my 20's and sadly it got stolen from me and I have never been able to replace it for a reasonable cost until I found Cold Steel. I am 6foot, so that walking stick is just a bit too short for me :( but the Ten Shin might work just fine.

Good review Chris, one of your most entertaining yet at least, glad you kept it together till the end, I live in a headspace similar I think, almost daily. Something that you might want to try is a 10-12 foot aluminum pike pole. I use one almost daily for keeping balance through regular triangulation or like a horizontal high wire balancing rod. You can use it like a fire pole for softer landings from high places or for vaulting gaps. You can push and pull with it and it even floats. I had a friend make one about 8 feet long and fill it full of rock salt giving it a substantial weight for powerful spiking and hard glancing if ever required. At my job I wear spiked boots and a life jacket working on log booms, these poles are excellent in so many ways to assist body movement and increase abilities. Taking one out in the woods would certainly be interesting. The pole packed with rock salt would do a number on that archery target although it's much better and useful as a normal light weight pole with a sharp point to spike and a hook to grab.

I have a stick similar to that last one. The difference is that I made mine from a small maple tree. My maple "walking stick" is 62" long but I am 6"1' so it fits. I use it often because these 68 year old bones need steadying sometimes when hiking in the woods or even while in town going to the feed store.

yeah with that tenshin stick the "hammer"? at the end would absolutely get in the way. using a boken you're meant to have your left hand down near the tsuka (pommel). using that thing the balance would be all over the place. the cold steel looks like a much better design. think i'll go with that one . thanks for the review.

If you have something against Gerber I don't blame you. However, on my birthday two or three years back, I was given a Freeman Guide folder that I haven't been using until recently. While I didn't expect quality, it locks up like a bank vault (though you need to use loctite on the pin eventually) sharpens up awesome, cuts great, and just feels good. It's basically a small bushcraft folder. I gutted a half dozen brook trout with it and made an arrow and batonned with it. It keeps growing on me and may be my favorite knife. I'm not telling you to buy one, but you don't have to pay to handle one. You may be genuinely impressed.

I've been walking with a home made mesquite wood cane for years, mainly because i'm not allowed to bring a real weapon with me but i can keep the cane at the front desk and pick it up for the way home, but in that time I've found i use the hook on top to grab fruit when its in season all the time, will probably add a loop to the end now though i had never thought of that, and I will look into grabbing a cold steel one of these days too!

An ebony knobkerrie stick is perfect ( not the Cold Steel plastic bed end cross table leg ) , a modern one will do as you can crack coconuts with them , break an arm , poke prod and jab but most of all... they work as a proper walking stick that is easy to hold comfortably which is very important if you are disabled like me . I use two bought from eBay for twenty quid each , both with a snookerball sized head and both with a swollen diamond hatched grip at the top of the shaft and retained on my wrists by a leather thong . If you just want a " Survival staff / stick " to play with then those others are fine but if you really need something you can use and lean on ( I am over 220llb ) but also defend yourself well with ( and legally here in the UK ) then go for the ebony one every time .

Liked your video. Really liked the Black Thorn stick. You can read measurements but seeing some one hold it.makes a difference. my problem is Stick would get jealous. He was cut from a tree in the back yard and lay hidden in the garage for a year. I found him and brought him out. He is 83 inches long and when I first used him I felt like Moses in the desert. Now I take him out every day with my dog. Backpacking I actually palmed him crossing some streams. Maybe he will not feel threatened if I got that ax head one you like. s Cane Cold Steel Steven Seagal Ten Shin While together on a research trip, Steven Seagal showed our company President one of the prized pieces in his collection - An oversized custom walking stick of his own design called the “Ten Shin”. This work of art was custom made of the finest exotic hardwood, but over the years it had weathered. Lynn immediately saw the potential in making a modern polymer replica of this unique design. One that wouldn’t age, crack or splinter. As a Martial Artist, Steven has spent decades using Bokken, so when it came to designing a walking stick, he incorporated elements of Bokken design into a unique “crook” topped stick. Lynn said “As soon as I saw that stick, I immediately ‘got it’. Steven had addressed so many of the issues associated with crook top designs, and added so many elements that become immediately apparent to any student of the fighting arts! It’s a functional crook cane, but it’s also an amazing tool for the modern Martial Artist. Whatever style you study, from walking stick defense, Japanese sword arts, stick fighting, tomahawk fighting, and even bayonet training, this design flows into everything!” As Steven is a very tall individual, the Ten Shin is the largest offering in our walking stick series. Featuring the symbol for “Ten Shin” - literally “Heaven Mind” or “Walking the Sacred Way” - a phrase of great personal significance to Steven, and an honorific title passed down to him from one of his closest Instructors, this is an unusual walking stick imbued with true warrior spirit.

When you want to do a shoot in the buggy woods, take a can of Yard Guard with you and fog the entire area first. Boom💥 no more bug noise!

A shingling hatchet makes a pretty good cane and can be useful in the bush. Grind a new profile to the edge and put it on a nice piece of ash or hickory. As for that "blackthorn", eeeww. I've a real one, a family heirloom.

Sounds good Chris. Cold Steel has a nice shop and very helpful people in Ventura California. They have expanded there cane and walking stick lines. Good information Chris. 💪
