GREAT to hear a military march PLAYED like a military march - and not as though it was being played by an American marching band (at 200 BPM), OR as though the conductor was fearful of waking up the old dears snoozing in Eastbourne Winter Gardens!

Mr Richard Evans at his finest loves his marches.

The only man to know how to conduct a march, style, tempo, the room & space his gives his players is amazing. Today 22.04.22 we find out that Mr.Evans has sadly passed away, RIP and thanks for the memories.

Beautiful Sop Nigel Fielding, one of the all time great Sop's.

Nigel Fielding is probably my favourite soprano player ever. He had the great sound, vibrato, power and range that make him a star. He always lifted any band he played in. I remember him playing the solo Ballade...it certainly rivaled Peter Robert's great performance of Flowerdale on youtube.

one of my favourite marches, in my view the soprano cornet is the star, so give him plenty of space to shine. mick, eupho.

Irresistible tempo. I love it!

I agree . There seems to be some sort of myth that marches have to played as fast as possible .

The other one I love from Dick was March - Wellington played with the Leyland Band at Spennymoor one year

That was in 1992 Mark, but his best march was of course `On The Quarter Deck', slow - grand and brilliant. No-one did it like ole Dick the Stick. I plan to put some of these on youtube. Rare performances of brilliantly played music.

You wanna hear the legendary performance of `On The Quarter Deck' conducted by Dick Evans? Look up this and play from 59:59 " Life Stories - Richard Evans Part 2". I am also going to upload a series of all the old favourites including Wellington, On the quarter deck and others soon. My channel will also include Billy Rushworth's legendary performance and Grimethorpe's mind blowing performance of the Music to the Royal Fireworks. I will also include Dykes live performance of Revelation at the Open (rare recording)...no performances have ever compared to that live performance. All are top draw performances of a quality not heard of today, and the channel will be dedicated to the best of the best stuff.

Being a ex sop player myself and ex conductor i would have handled it a little different . Give more room to sop player troms and euphos belt up . Such a beautiful obligato show him off . This is only my opinion .
@SimonPhillips763 жыл бұрын
How? Play it slower? 😂

And it's wrong!!
@Mark64W3 жыл бұрын
Agreed . My mate Nigel did get slightly ' drowned ' by the lower band to be honest Steve . Perhaps Mr Evans should have observed the repeat and asked them to let the soprano cornet part to take the limelight on the first time through ? Just my opinion as well . Best wishes , Mark .

It’s nice when things like this randomly appear on one’s KZbin feed. Don’t forget, we’re hearing it through the microphones and it’s a live recording. I’d wager the balance in the room was spot on. Great performance this.
