Good ol disingenuous stinkygoose likes to make drama. Those books DID spike and people DID make money. Now that the market is cooling you are blaming people that reported on the stats for your own decision. No one forced you to buy. Be a man and own up to your own decisions. This video is just click bate to get people mad.

Take it in good humor Gem….we all still love your videos.. especially about statues, omnibuses and when you interview people. You’re at your best when you are doing your own thing. I personally love when you are on the con floor interviewing different studio reps or creators like McFarlane. Your series from Brazil was great. Hoping more creative companies would hire you for on-camera promotional work…because that is what you are excellent at.

@codsworth9950 If Gem only covered statues or did comic or omnibus reviews and overviews I personally don't think he would have contributed to this but his appearances on Comictom are absolutely part of the problem that Stickygoose is talking about. I don't think anything he does on his own channel is part of this and I'm a subscriber. I unsubbed from Comictom and Very Gary a while back because I realized they don't really cover anything I love about comics and contribute to the kind of speculator crap that made comics almost die in the 90s. I do think Sticky featuring Gem so much in this video is a little disingenuous when it probably should have been Comictom but I have to admit it made me laugh. It seems like Gem manages to show up whenever anyone talks shit about him as he and his wife showed up in the Epic Collection group when it happened there when he's never even had an Epic Collection that Marvel didn't send him. But, like I said, I still sub to Gem as I enjoy his omnibus overviews and reviews. I'm not a hater at all. I don't hate Very Gary or Comictom either but that type of speculation comics tube isn't for me and I think it hurts the hobby as much as it helps it by driving sales.

The problem with these new comic book collectors leaving the hobby is they aren't actually leaving the hobby--they are bailing on a bad business decision. The hobby is collecting comics for your own enjoyment. Collecting comics with the hope of selling them for a profit later on is not a hobby, it's a speculation business. So, they could have just done the same thing by buying stocks, getting nervous, and selling too early because they thought it was going to be a quick buck.

Anyone who is selling a few years after getting into comics is exactly who I'm excited to leave. I don't need people in my hobby making it more expensive. If you're worried about the value of your comics long term then you're a money collector, not a comic collector. I wish every comic was a $1 because I don't have any plans to sell mine.

I'm so glad I got into comic books in 2020. I don't think I'll ever leave the hobby and I'm glad that we're in a price decline. It benefits me greatly when it comes to buying keys. And filling those holes in runs that I'm looking for. Plus there's always going to be a different style of collection to look for a different genre such as the Marvel 25th anniversary style books or the bubble gum books. And right now I am getting into Omnibuses, which is a great way to be able to read all those old books from the '60s and '70s without paying a million dollars to read the run

I love that! The fact that you're actually reading the books tells me you're in this for a love of the medium. I don't mind if folks collect as cover collectors, or just like keys, whatever floats your boat. I just can't get behind speculation or people that treat comics like it's the S&P 500 - just buy into that if it's what you want lol. I've been an on/off collector my entire life (really just taken some small breaks when finances required). I got back in during the pandemic, and I'm so glad to still be reading and collecting.

This is just a hit piece on other comic KZbinrs. The shift in the market is not because of speculation. The entire industry has always been fueled by spec. Most of the price correction is due to so many new collectors getting into it during the pandemic. Everyone was stuck at home and they were looking for something to do to pass the time. Sales skyrocketed. Now that everyone is back to their everyday life, they’re realizing they might not want them or maybe they need the money due to inflation on everything else in life.

Speculation was a major driving force of the Covid comic bubble… especially tied to the MCU… but now that the MCU is circling the toilet bowl at the moment and ..as you say… people have other things they must spend their money on… the market has way more supply than demand. Plus.. every Tom, Dick and Harry thought they would jump in and become dealers/sellers… way more comics out there than people that really want them.

Going to be blunt here. Gem Mint, Comic Tom, Very Gary, are all resellers not collectors of comics. Gem Mint used to do a lot more Whatnot, but has stopped that and even isn't sponsored by them anymore. In fact, he barely makes any content now. ComicTom is a reseller and pushes all the things so he can sell them at his price. Very Gary is also a reselller, but he actually does look at the history of the book price wise and prices accordingly.

A lot of it has to do with Whatnot. When Whatnot hit, it was a way for folks to make a lot of money very quickly and artificially drive prices up past the normal price. Then Whatnot was like, hey we want to make exclusives and push them, let's bring in some of the bigger sellers to do so.

@jimbomba4365

As someone who lived through the Bubble Bursting after the Speculator Boom, it was easy to see the warning signs that the collector's market was heading back in that exact same direction. Most of the same mistakes were made again, most of the same people remained willfully ignorant because they were making money and that's all they cared about. Thankfully, if this is rock bottom then the market is nowhere near as bad as it was after the Bubble Burst back then. This time it's only affecting the "Blue Chip Keys" and the books the influencers spent all those years pumping up, but in the mid '90s EVERYTHING CRASHED. New issues, back issues, the indies, every company and every genre. If it was newsprint held together by staples, the demand was gone. If anything, the market is getting off light with this "market correction."

@@jackiechun6540 Allow me to clarify. Yes, the losses from the collectors who invested in these big money books and graded slabs is bigger than those who invested in the spec books of the '90s. Without question. What I meant was that the overall drop in value of comics from major keys to box filler was more drastic in the '90s, and it did more damage to the comic book industry for both the back issue market and new comic publishing. My apologies for the confusion.

I was collecting before he was born. I only watched this video because he has pictures of three prominent people in this hobby. Sticky has a negative opinion that some people flock to. He rips on very Gary who is a seller. The keyword is seller. He's not here to make friends. He's here to make money. You need to know this hobby can be for fun or blood money. I'm here for fun. People who are new to the hobby need to ask people who are collectors about what to do and not to do. Don't follow KZbinrs who do this for a living on what to do. Watching people who are getting out of the hobby with a stack of new books that will never be worth anything doesn't bother me.

Every influencer out there is monetizing their status in some way either via KZbin paybacks, to their resale business, to their pressing/cleaning business, to their affiliations with CGC. It's unfortunate to me that collectors don't insist on the influencers disclosing their conflicts of interest. You're right though, I am a fairly new collector after getting back involved early last year and found all of these folks and ended up spending tons of money on WhatNot and eBay on stuff that I will never see any return on. Luckily, I've never really seen this hobby as an "Investment" like so many of the influencers in the community like to make it out to be. I collect what I like and expect that even if the value goes to zero, I'm still going to enjoy it.

What is going on with all the current comic book industry is the same thing that went on during the 1990s. Variant covers, exclusives, etc. Death of Superman was the big hype book, people were going to be wealthy in 20 years. This is a sad thing for the hobby. It can now happen at a much greater speed with the internet. Biggest lesson I learned when I started collecting 40 years ago, don't treat comics like stocks. They are not pure investment, comics are entertainment you might invest in. If the price never goes up, you at least got the enjoyment factor.

Well, I have laid off buying since I got some great deals, just holding and waiting for the market to rebound, but I still love comics. Horrible time to sell, but people are spooked because of all the KZbin hysteria. And I started in 2018 again after 2 decades. I definitely didn't know what I liked, but I took it slow. Did fall victim to the speculation, KZbin videos, variant and retailer covers. I didn't spend too much, but I figure there is always a learning curve in anything you do. And comic collecting is highly subjective to each individual. But I figured it out. Didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth at all, it's how I learn, jump in and do it, just be cautious! Buying anything based solely on the influencers opinion, then you are not a real collector. Sorry. But real collectors buy what THEY like. Not what someone says is the next big thing. If you don't know what you like, you go into a comic book store and buy some new issues for cover price. You as a person know what you like and the covers alone would call to your attention. You don't need to buy slabbed books. Plus I don't get people that slab everything. If a book isn't valued at least double the cost of slabbing then it's a waste of money. I have to correct you. I don't care and never have if my comics go up in value. But yes, I do keep them in the best possible conditions.

I myself is one of many who does… 😅 For me it’s not about the money, it’s more about protecting that book, its history and content. For protection we use to place our comics in a shoe box 📦 or wherever possible, as long as our comics are safe, right? We can argue that “at least we can take it out of a box and read compare to having to break opening a slab like a piñata 🪅 “ and I would agree, wholeheartedly. But everyone has their own choices to make in whatever it is we do. So let’s respect each other’s decisions.

I buy comics every week to read KNOWING in six months most of this will be in a dollar bin, but I do it for the enjoyment. 2. You buy comics to flip to make money. I was taught that if I have nothing nice to say I shouldn't say it. Both sides may be missing the point... If you want to buy to flip and make a quick buck.. do it. If you genuinely enjoy comics as a hobby then do it...I don't believe either side is wrong. Why not just leave speculators to speculate and readers to read? That's the beauty behind all of it and in both scenarios there are lessons to learn financially, professionally, and personally. Aspire to inspire and improve the next generation. I watched the full 11:02 and you actually seem like a pretty decent and honest person but the channel bashing and name calling of other creators shows a lack of integrity and discipline. For that it lessens the likelihood of me supporting your channel. My point being, you are creating the argument that the other influencers are wrong because they were possibly being nefarious, that their collecting/investing advice was possibly bad, and because of that new collectors are leaving the comic book hobby. There could also possibly be an argument made that you are nefariously using these creators in hopes of gaining traction to the right audience and also to gain publicity. I am not accusing you of doing that but that is how some may see it. I do think you make good content in terms of subject matter interest and content quality so I'm writing this as a piece of constructive criticism.

So I've watched a few if your videos. You seem to mean well, but damn dude you're kinda depressing. If someone bought a Hulk 181 in 2020/2021 it was just bad timing. It's been a solid investment for years, they just bought at the worst time in 50 years. That shit happens. If someone takes their ball and goes home it's all good. I also kind if feel people who sweat others leaving the hobby to hard are ultimately just trying to cover there own ass. I think you're genuine, but you put those vibes out a bit.

I take ALL influencers with a grain of salt. I have learned a few things about the hobby from them (especially current events in the industry) but mostly it’s just entertaining. It’s fun to hear about books I already own. Otherwise, I don’t take any of it too seriously…since I’m not a flipper.

My man, wise words! I buy what I like and if it goes down in price, that's the way it is. I don't slab it to preserve it's value or to check to make sure it's not restored so I didn't get 'ripped off'. Collectibles are a highly speculative asset and no one should invest in them as a 'retirement' fund.

I’ve been collecting for almost 3 decades. I only have a lil over 300 comics total. I’m an artist and comicbook illustration really inspires me. So for me… I buy comics I personally like. To b more specific, I buy comics if I like the artwork. Like Jim Lee, Todd Mcfarlane, Greg Capullo, David Finch and Marc Sivestri. If they happen to gain value over time that’s great. But I don’t intend on selling them anytime soon if at all.

Got in to comics this year. I don't collect. Mostly I purchase comics cause I like the cover art and want to hang it on the wall. If I want to read a comic I buy the omnibus, a reprint, or cheapest floppy I can get my hands on. No intention or desire to sell any of the comics I have. They are entertainment to me. I try to buy what I can from the local comic shop and go to ebay for the stuff they don't have.

Comics should be something you love to read, investing is always risky. People who are just "getting into comics" aren't here for good reasons anyway so who cares if they get ripped off. I have a few grails I always wanted I don't care what they are worth since I will never be selling them anyway. My kids may care one day but i'll be long gone

I am a comics collector not because of key speculation, but because I enjoy and create comics. Today I got a massive library of collected editions, and many of the issues I own I'm gradually replacing them by collected editions and selling them or even donating them to popup libraries. It always depends in what you enter in this for, and if it is for the sole enjoyment, it will never be a loss.

Collector or Speculator? I've been buying comics on and off since the seventies I buy it & read them and I also save them. I'm a collector. These newbie speculators are the ones that are getting screwed. They're not really into comics & they fall for the latest fads and buy up those high priced variant covers that are going to be forgotten about it in 6 months and will crash in price. To be honest I wish the Speculators would just stay out of the Comic book market they're the ones driving the prices up.

The psychology of grading has really gone astray. Originally designed to protect and insurance value. Now people chase the grade not the book… I grade my favorite books for protection, some are from my childhood. It’s really sad that the FMV is insanely varied. Collect what you love, sell what you don’t …. Don’t fall victim to FOMO, been there, doesn’t work out very often.

I think people have to go through a market crash before they actually get it. I picked up collecting comics in 1990. I read comics when I was a kid in the 70s, but I wasn't a collector. I read and re-read each book and traced the artwork inside. Then when I joined the Air Force and was in tech school, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars was the big thing. We didn't collect them. We all read the same copies. It wasn't until I came back stateside in 1990 that I began reading comics again. The difference was that I bought a short box , bags, and boards and made sure not damage any of my comics. I hardly collect floppies now. I spend my money and collected editions. I was buying omnibuses, but I've moved on to deluxe editions. Those are the sweet spot for me. Omnibuses are too heavy. The deluxe editions are just right. The only floppies I buy now are to frame and hang on the wall. I don't do it for monetary value, but for how much I like the art. I genuinely don't want my comics to go up in value. If they go up too much, I cannot justify owning them. For example, Catwoman #51, the Adam Hughes cover. I bought the floppie when I saw it in the magazine section at Borders.I framed it and it hung on my wall for years. I never knew it was worth a lot of money. Knowing it's worth a lot of money, I don't really want it anymore. I sent it to CGC this morning and when it comes back, I'm selling it. If it was still worth $7, it would still be on my wall. For me, comics has never been about investing. Comics are way too volatile. Anyone who wants to invest their money should put it into an index fund like the S&P 500.

I can understand wanting to sell it for a profit, but selling it just because you don’t want anything of value makes no sense. You bought the book because you liked the art. You don’t just start hating the art because it’s worth more than you paid for it. Do you sell you house as soon as there’s a profit to be had? Getting rid of something as soon as it’s popular is the most hipster thing I’ve ever heard of.
@RickInMaryland

@@codsworth9950 I like the art, I just don't like it more than I like $300. The other books I have framed and hung are at most $10 books. For example, my favorite is All Star Batman And Robin #4, the Frank Miller variant Superman cover. My point is there are a plethora of comics out there with fantastic covers that cost almost nothing.

They are bullshitters. They don't really know anything about what the comic story inside is about and they know zip about the artists.

So...in my experience most local comic book shops have new, open comics you can flip through and examine before you purchase. For newbies, that is an excellent time to see if the book interests you or not, and make your decisions based on your likes. Never, I repeat never take advice from comic book channels telling you "this is hot", or "don't miss out on this book", because clearly they have an agenda. Now if you're buying as a speculator, and looking for quick money, well you reap what you sow, so don't come crying when you lose money based on idiot shysters hawking goods.

Instead of talking about comics or the comics market, you are talking about how you see other people talking about comics. This just seems strange to me. I don’t watch the guys you mention, but big deal. There’s nothing wrong with someone selling comics. Also - a comic can be a blue chip key - like Ultimate Fallout or Hulk 181 - and still lose value. This is all a market.
