Hi Ryan, I have 1 1/2 year experience into the hobby. I started with a tiny 13 gal Evo, 2 small fishies and 13 coral frags from WWC. Weekly 50% water changes, dH 8.5, Cal 425, NO3 max 4, PH 8.1-8.4. I've seen the corals grow stunningly during a year and everything was going perfect. My nightmare started right after I upgraded to a 38 gallon most sophisticated set and I added 35 coral frags from the Reef a Palooza NY show. The frags were not quarantined because I didn't have a second tank at that time but all of them were dipped in iodine solution according to the instructions. Now most of my corals are fading like old plants and even dying back. The first ones showing this symptom were the zoanthids and palis. They don't fully open and each couple of weeks there's one polyp less. One day I noticed on one of the zoanthids a tiny thing very similar to the Xenia polyp coming out from the base of the zoa's head. As soon as I touch the frag this thing immediately retracts and disappears, it's so fast. I thought maybe I won a new species of coral for free. On other coral frags I can see some sort of built up's on the tiny piece of rock where the little coral is sit, it's some sort of tiny nudibranch coral anchored underneath the coral. By other hand, I've seen lately some sort of strings too sweeping all over the tank when the lights are off or very low. These strings have a head very similar to the stinging polyps of the Galaxy coral. These strings are elastic and don't come from any coral, they're just anchored randomly on anything like rocks, sand, coral plugs, just anything. As soon as I dip my hand in the aquarium for pulling them they immediately retract making it almost impossible to catch them. I've spent about $2500 bucks in frags and this problem got me desperate because I don't wanna lose my corals. I live in Queens -NYC, I'm a foreigner with less than good English and I don't have any single friend who's into the reefing hobby. Please suggest me what can I do. I could pay professional assistance if its necessary because each day my corals look smaller. The only corals that haven't been affected are the Capricornis Montipora, the Euphyllia species and an Alveopora. Thank you for your assistance.

This was not available back then and has been a good refresher with helping me to catch back up to modern times. A little hesitant about BAYER anything though as i am not a fan of that company, but i digress. Keep it up boys! You are helping to drag me back into the hobby :)

Added my first coral to my peninsula 25 today. I believe it’s an electric green rhodactis. Didn’t have the tools to remove the frag plug, but did do a coral rx dip and shook it around quite a bit and then a fresh saltwater dip afterwards. Didn’t see anything suspicious under the mushroom or on the plug or in the container after dipping so hopefully this was sufficient!

Cutting off the base sounds like a sensible precaution. That said, I only ever see people cutting the bases from sps corals. Can the same process be applied to lps and softies? Follow on question ... can/should the dipping process be applied to ornamental macro algae? Thanks for the awesome vids!

while this addresses the need for dips and preventing pest introduction, I feel this method will cause more casualties in newly shipped corals that are already stressed. $20 frag its worth the risk of losing it to do this. $1000 coral you might care alittle more about keeping the coral happy before cutting it up and shocking it with multiple water conditions.

My lfs has a coral section; two tanks with two separate sumps. They told me that they dip everything and quarantining isn’t necessary. Should they be trusted? All do are fish and aquariums. They also offer a weekly and bi weekly service to visit people in the area and maintain tanks, so I feel like they know what they are doing and should be trusted. They aren’t a huge store but do have some nice stuff and very helpful and well educated fish and reef keepers.

Another inspirational tutorial. Do you guys think you could do an overview piece on pool sand filters and their use as mechanical filtration for public or domestic aquaria? I'm curious about whether the water expelled during backwashing normally surpasses or undershoots the amount of water exchanged during a water change on a similar system using more conventional filtration.

Use Dr. G's LPS/SPS Coral dip as well BRS to treat for Red Bugs. It has the same ingredient as Interceptor. I got my LFS to carry this stuff. You guys should as well. Use 1ml per gallon. Run this for 6-12 hrs. Believe me when I say this stuff kills Red Bugs. The bottle says not to use in your display tank, but I did. 100% success. It will kill/harm any invertebrate though, so snail, hermits, and starfish need to be removed. I would skip the Coral Rx altogether as it's more harsh on coral than Bayer Advanced. No need to add unnecessary stress. My dip/qt protocol is, remove frag from plug, Bayer dip, then Dr's G's soak for 12 hrs. If I see anything I qt for several weeks.

Can you use one quarantine tank for fish and corals? Just asking because if I quarantined fish before I put them into my main tank I’d run the system with copper. If I emptied the q tank out and then quarantined corals in the same tank. Would that be okay?
