Take a look inside this old Swedish cottage in Västra Götaland, Sweden. I fell in love with this traditional red Swedish house and, within just a few weeks returned to pick up the keys to my new home. Had so much fun putting together this tour of my wooden Swedish summer house, hope you enjoy your tour!

Hi Jenny , about the stove ....,you said the fire doesnt last when u close the doors ,...of course not ,..the most lower door has to remain half open in order to help the smoke go out ..., then when the fire s gonne you have to close it to keep the heat! Try it and update it to me :) , kisses !

Oh, my goodness, Jennifer!! You’re my hero!! I’ve been trying to see me in five years and I have nothing... due to our United States issues! If I could leave this instant I would!! Ireland, Scotland, Sweden or Norway - I adore them all! Please keep the videos coming and my heart is truly with you and your family! Wish I could be there to share a meal cooked on the wood stove! My childhood and early adult years were spent on my grandparents cattle ranch in Northern California where we lived such a wonderfully simple (if sometimes inconvenient) life! Good for you!! I’m definitely a fan of the lifestyle!!

Hi Jennifer. Nice house you bought. A little unusual then with a small kitchen. The most common in old Swedish houses is that the kitchen is the largest room and so a small "chamber" as a bedroom. As you have probably seen, we do not normally have shutters, yes some have it as decoration. Hope you will enjoy yourself in Sweden and with us Swedes, we may be a little unavailable at first but then ...
@JenniferCarterWriter
@JenniferCarterWriter 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Krister. The small kitchen maybe due to the fact it was possibly a soldatorp, but almost certainly the oldest house in the village. The neighbours have been really welcoming, so far!

I first went to Sweden in 1973 we stayed in Kalma. My guys parents were beyond fabulous, a little shy and guarded at first. For Midsommer we went to their country house and Rolfs Daddy made me a wild flower crown and we took the record player into the garden and danced around until after midnight. Sweden will always own half of my Heart. Australia 7.12pm 1 January 2021.

Sauna in Swedish is "bastu". In case you haven't figured it out yet that sauna is your bathroom... If you don't have running water, the sauna is where you get cleaned up. You can heat up water inside the sauna and mix it with cold water to get the temperature you like and then you wash yourself in the sauna. That's how we did it in Sweden in the olden days.

Nice to hear you speak lovable about things we are used to, living here in Sweden. Not everybody have the opportunity to own such a nice cottage...byt more and mode people seem to move out to one now instead of living tight in the cities. I am now over 60 and will downsize to this typ of cottage soon...but with running water and live there yearround..I like your thinking about doing NOW and not later.. exactly what I felt after loosing my husband.To do now.. and not later.. because there might not be a "later"..Greetings.. Great movie, so glad you enjoy your cottage! Just wanted to say that those pine cones and bark in that basket are excellent fire starters. At least that's why we collect them and what we use them for. We use those for our woodstove and our fireplace in our cottage. And get the chimney sweeps in to fix that chimney - there's nothing like food cooked on a wood stove, I tell you! I don't know why but everything tastes sooo much better. I hope you'll be very happy in your new home. We actually moved permanently to ours as we loved staying there so much. :-)

This is the most inspiring thing I’ve seen in ages. You are healing your broken heart whilst at the same time bringing new joy and love to your whole family. It must be SO wonderful to have everyone there together celebrating the seasons in that garden, collecting water from the pump for use indoors and running out to the loo at night! When I was a child in Australia, we had a weekend farm with no electricity and only a rain water tank. Some of my favourite childhood memories are having to abandon the car at the front gate (because the black soil was too slippery to drive on after infrequent but heavy rain), walking the long path up to the house, lighting the old kerosene lamps, my mother cooking dinner on the old wood-fired stove… It was a bit of a trial using the outside loo in the dark because of spiders. but now as I reflect back over the years, these are such treasured memories! And you are doing that for your family and for all of us along with you for the ride. Thank you so much. xx

Have you managed to get a fire in the wood stove yet? I have a similar one and it is a bit of knowledge to get fire in them, because they require a draft so that the fire picks up .. After a while it sucks air itself if you feed it with fuel (paper, lamp oil) but it takes a while.. especially when it's cold outside. (There is also a damper that must be open of course).
@neilmunro6683

Would be interesting for some if you would do a sit-down video of the process you went through to by a house and land. Is it complicated to get residency in Sweden and is the process expensive to apply for residency? I live In Scotland and would certainly be interested in the process. How expensive is food and what about work permits and being able to drive a car? Dose a UK car licence mean anything or would one have to resit a car test? Is the power supply 240v like the UK... Great video thank you. Are the houses well insulated for winter?? I know it is cold in winter...
@SvengelskaBlondie
@SvengelskaBlondie 4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure I can answer at least some of these questions, at least will try. "How expensive is food ?" Sweden is one of the more expensive places for food in Europe, still it's not that expensive unless you decide to eat out allot (or buy expensive food). Average take-away meal is around 100 SEK in general and fancy restaurants are anything from a few hundred to a thousand SEK depending upon what you indulge in. You can still get away quite cheaply when it comes to food if you shop around, also look for food that's going out of date cause they slash the price up to 50% on such items. "Dose a UK car licence mean anything or would one have to resit a car test" You can have your license converted to one that works in Sweden, think it's to an European license. that should make it possible to drive with your license in Sweden. "Is it complicated to get residency in Sweden and is the process expensive to apply for residency?" No, not since you already live in Europea. Regarding work permits, don't think you need one since Scotland is part of European Economic Area (EEA),. If you where from a country outside of it, that would be a different story. "Is the power supply 240v like the UK" Swedish standard is 230V "Are the houses well insulated for winter?" Yes, even in southern Sweden where I live the winters can get a bit cold (can go down to -15C where I live). My grandmother used to live in Dalarna before She passed, I remember that it used to get down to -25C where she lived. Having a well insulated house is pretty much a requirement in Sweden, unless you want to freeze your testies off. One thing that be worth thinking about is having what we swedes call "Bergvärme", there's companies that will drill into the ground and use pipes to pipe heat from subterranean sources and use that to heat your home. It's a bit of an investment, still it can be well worth it to not have to rely on a fireplace for warmth. "process you went through to by a house and land" Depends a little on how you do it, if you do it yourself or make use of real estate agencies. There are quite a few good guides on how this works in general, they tend to be in Swedish so some translation app is required. Easiest would be to just get in touch with a real estate agent, then you can ask them questions about specific things you wonder about. One important thing to remember is that the house may be part of a general development plan, so certain things might require "bygglov" or construction rights before you add/modify something. There's still quite a bit of stuff you can do without needing to apply for that, allot depends on location and how far out into the countryside the place is located at.

As a Swede, I´ll give you a proper answer :-) Try a website called www.hemnet.se Its a place where you can find houses for sale all over Sweden. If you want something really cheap, you should look for a house like this up north in Sweden. Its so freeking beautiful up there, but winter is coming, and you need to cope with that. But if you have plans to use your house only during the summermonths you will have sunlight 24hours a day :-)

@@JenniferCarterWriter well I think your cottage is beautiful. Have you used it yet during the winter months ? I bet it's a magical place at Christmas 😊🎄 Hearing your story about your little grandaughter ....I can only imagine. I have three little granddaughters of my own. Looking forward to more video updates of your little Swedish idyll.

It's and old cottage, not a modern house. They didn't have indoor toilets or state of the art kitchens. You don't "live" there, it's a retreat to charge your batteries. People are so spoilt and have no sense if history.

Do you speak Swedish? Can you say more about how the move took place? Also, it seems that the price was excellent-why so cheap? Any of your experiences about the logistics would be very helpful; thank you.

I am trying to learn Swedish, but it’s a slow process. Swedish summer cottages are plentiful and not expensive. The housebuying process is surprisingly simple and straightforward

@@JenniferCarterWriter You won't have that much trouble communication with younger Swedish people, thanks to the emphasis of teaching English in school. I don't exactly where you live in the country, one possibility is to look up language cafeteria's. I know that there's places like that let people that are learning Swedish meet others, sort of help them learn and get immersed in the language. Might be something to consider, should you live close to such places. Edit: Swedes can be a bit rusty when it comes to speaking English, still many are good at understanding and reading it. Just be aware of that. Most Swedes don't speak English much outside of talking to foreigners/tourists/exchange students. Edit2: Saw that you lived outside of Gothenburg, pretty sure you should be able to find such places there. If you google "språkcafe göteborg", you will get several results of the aforementioned cafeteria. The nice thing is that it's pretty much language practice for free, just make sure you go on the days when they have Swedish as the chosen language (some have multiple languages).
