Remember that both the technology and the staff have changed. Maybe it is just easier and more practical (also less taxing on 3D artists) to just make a few base skeletons and skins and make them customizable so you can get more NPCs out of them I predict that almost every race is now going to be a “fully customizable” race because it opens the door for reusable gear/animations/effects and randomly generated mobs

When you stated that ethereals are essentially souls attached to bandages it made me think of the one of the next speculated class and how it ties into the story of the expansion. It’s no secret that the expansions that performed the best were the ones with new classes. I personally enjoy the rp/lore of it and why we need “this specific ally” to fight the opposition. A lot of it seems to be “fight fire with fire”, the exception being monk, where the big baddies weren’t monks. What if tinker class lore was somehow tied to ethereal practices of binding souls to machinery/armor (thinking a bit full metal alchemist). This could work in the same way as dracthyr because they already have the framework for it; release a class/race combo and then later down the line open up the race to different classes. Personally, I do not like dracthyr because they can’t mog, but if we can mog ethereals then they’d all look like haunted cursed armors. Would be sick. Also, doesn’t make sense that the race that offers mog services wouldn’t be able to mog.

The reason I'm willing to believe they may become playable is because I find the new models kinda... Boring? Yeah, they're higher fidelity, but it looks like what playable Nightborne were next to the NPC Nightborne. The original Ethereal models were wild, chaotic, unpredictable, like hastily made bandages for a volatile bit of energy. The new ones look calm and collected, almost smooth, like whoever "made" them had time to be more thorough. Even their stance looks less decrepit and desperate. 0:22 Look at this comparison. Smooth and relaxed on the left compared to wild and volatile on the right. That to me suggests it's a different "level" of Ethereal. If we're going to Karesh, perhaps it's a faction that has learned to live with their fate in a more peaceful way than the power-hungry Ethereals we've previously known?

@Wegrosteak That's exactly the problem, they look human. Ethereal are not human. Hell, their true form doesn't even have legs. What the TBC model did right was making their form within the wrappings look more free flowing, as well as having the wrapping look loosely wrapped as it is not wrapped around a solid form. In the spaces that didn't have wrapping, their gaseous form went outside of the contours created by the wrapping.

I don’t see them becoming a race, and if they do, I can’t see it being during war within. It would be during the ‘midnight’ expansion if anything. There is already data-mined evidence showing that the Harronir are the next playable race in the war within. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was near the end of the this patch. Since we got the new storyline quests “linger shadows” which is all about Harronir and black blood.

I really don´t see this happening. Ethereals don't even have faces to be atractive or be popular enough for players, or to be worth the trouble for devs to make them playable. The fact that some npc's are getting customization options doesn't mean that we will be able to play them. I mean, there are other races with more "chances" and lore to be playable, and with more time in the game, but never happened for them. So I see no hope for Ethereals. The Haranir on the other hand, time will tell.

They should drop the faction requirements. Let certain races remain pure neutral from the Alliance and Horde. There's more than enough content that isn't faction exclusive, and they allow cross faction queue for various things so really having it be required is unnecessary. It also seems weird for some races to want to align to either faction anyway. Ethereals dont serm like they would be interested in Alliance or Horde affairs...

These new ones are missing all the soul and swagger the current in game ethereals have in their posing and animations

At this point, I'm just pissed whenever they add new or allied races that are NOT ogres. It's kind of annoying that one of the core units in WC2 is still not a playable race. We gox fox people, cyborg gnomes, dragons and stone dwarves. Would be cool to see factionbound races again.

I would still love the Tuskkar to be a playable race! I can see them as tanks and healers!

I think you are connecting dots in the wrong way. I would love to roll an ethereal character, but I don't think they are going to be playable. The Ethereal character model has been in need of a upgrade to be in line with the current game design/aesthetic for a loooong time. It makes sense they will get one in line with incoming storytelling updates. It would be really cool if it did happen though! For context, the Naga character models were also in need of one before they had an upgrade ages ago, with new armor and textures also in line with storytelling updates. They aren't playable characters. It was just a much needed update.
