Nalin Prabhat, a highly decorated IPS officer from the 1992 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, has officially taken over as the Director General of Police (DGP) for Jammu and Kashmir as of October 1, 2024. His appointment follows the retirement of the previous DGP, R R Swain. Prabhat is known for his extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations, particularly through his leadership of the Greyhounds, an elite anti-Naxal force in Andhra Pradesh. He has also served in significant roles within the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), including Inspector General of Operations and Additional Director General in Kashmir.
Prabhat has been awarded multiple honors throughout his career, including three Police Gallantry Medals and the Parakram Padak. His recent posting as Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) was shortened to facilitate his transfer to the Union Territories cadre. His leadership is expected to bring a strategic approach to the complex security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, which continues to face threats from terrorism and internal unrest.
