He was a bad DA in San Francisco, and is worse in LA, a lot worse. SF is on the verge of recalling it's failed DA. LA needs to do the same. What Gascon misses is that even if things like gang enhancements are not deterrents to crime, they do keep violent felons in prison longer, and that keeps them from committing crimes. He may "feel" these don't deter crime, but they are part of the law. His job is to enforce the law, and not play social worker, or woke policy advocate. The efforts in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s to put violent and repeat criminals in prison for long periods of time did increase prison populations, but they also drove down crime rates dramatically. Recent policies to not charge gang enhancements and three strikes, to do away with cash bail, and to release criminals early have led to the increases in crime that we are all seeing. Most times when a violent crime is committed it seems it is done by a repeat offender out on parole, or released from custody pending trial. The recent mass shooting in Sacramento is but one clear example of this. At least one of the shooters was released on parole against the advice of the Sacramento DA. Gascon fails to use all of the tools available to his office while LA burns. He needs to be recalled, and soon.

Hi Richard, Having a troubled teenager (diagnosed with PTSD) I get what you're thinking. The young gang member murderer no doubt comes from a shocking background but is there any chance he can be transformed from a violent thug into a decent hard working respectful member of the community. He would need a new family and new friends and a very different attitude. How would he acheive this. He is showing absolutely no remorse whatsoever - he doesn't seem to have a conscience. In my opinion all the rehab in the world would have no effect on someone this damaged. This soft approach to crime clearly is a disaster in some parts of the USA. The first priorty of any Govt is to protect the citizens. You in the USA with your "right to bear arms" insanity have not got a hope in hell of reforming violent crime without harsh penalties.
