With Koei's appearances at Tokyo Game Show 2024 & State of Play September 2024, we've received A LOT of brand new information, gameplay, and footage of the upcoming Dynasty Warriors Origins.

Technically no. DW:O presentation-wise is more RPG than ever with a more consistent narrative. It’s similar to an IP warriors-like rather than the traditional arcade warrior. Therefore you get an “MC” in an warriors game.

My biggest issue is the roster cut. producer saying they've dropped the roster down from the 90+ down to 9 playable companions. His reasoning that just continuously adding characters wasn't sustainable for the franchise and they wanted to go back and focus on the gameplay. I wonder if that means we will be getting them as DLC or something? There was an interview of him talking about it. The producer had worked on DW2->DW6 he drops his wisdom (partial part of the interview) "Of course, this decision was not made on a whim. Because since Dynasty Warriors 7, we have been designing the games with the goal of keep adding more characters. From 7 to 9, we have been adding characters non-stop. I think this approach is no longer sustainable in the current gaming industry environment. So the title Origins is also to hope that we can return to the starting point by working hard on game mechanics. I also read the feedback from players. Some people think that it is not a Dynasty Warriors game without so many playable characters, but I think that if we keep adding characters, the Warriors series won't last long, so this time we are determined to revamp the game-play system. In addition to the protagonist, there are 9 playable officers in this game, which is much less than the previous games. Some old players may give negative feedback such as "Tomohiko Sho, do you really know how to make a good game?", but I still think my design idea is correct." That being said, I'm still grabbing it day one. I think the combat becoming more in-depth and strategic is a massive boon, and even if I can't play my favorite officer (Gan-Ning, Zhou Tai.. Ma Chao please be added soon) I think I'm really going to enjoy this one anyways for different reasons.

By “playable”, these characters are actually more like summon skills rather than “playable” because you don’t play as them through a level, but only temporarily switch into them for some over level ouputs and switch back. So essentially like Final Fantasy summons.

yeah, dev said the companion is like "fever mode", swap to companion for limited time if condition met, that kinda worrying me, hopefully there will be free mode to play as official general. and I hope there will be character customize for the nameless hero

Mc cannot be customised, barely to never talks, only 9 summonable or temporarily swapable characters, lesser weapons with the same easy movesets from dw9, no miracle weapons, no caw. Damn this is not dw tbh but more like a spinoff that plays similarly to fate sam remnt

@zarithevill to be fair the movesets are not the same. They are so not the same that origins literally threw away any consistent combo standards. Every weapon in the game has its own underlying logic and combo chart like Monster Hunter.

I agree! The series needed a fresh take but I seriously hope they do add some DLC later on, to help with the engagement/ longevity of the series. Listening the long time fans is a great way to creat together! I like your ideas too.

A lot of the systems sound interesting, but this is sounding distinctly not Dynasty Warriors. I enjoy the "not-Warriors" RPGs like Samurai Remnant, but I don't want to mean we don't get traditional warriors titles again. Probably a heavy miss for me.

I don't like the way all the peons react to your attacks. Something just looks off about it. Like the way they all seem get sucked in to the same spot right in front of you, before your final hit sends them all flying away. Very unnatural looking.

Not gonna lie, I really respect the director for not pandering to the core fanbase and still trying to revamp the franchise while being faithful. Especially after the disastrous DW9. The strategic part is interesting, the map looks insane, the NPCs seemed to be actually challenging while being fair. The gameplay is abit concerning for me though. While it's certainly not mindlessly button smash, I'm afraid it might be monotonous. Especially with alot less movesets and all the triangle spams. But if they could pull it off I think it's going to be the most revolutionary DW game thus far. Not gonna hold my breath though.

4 things I've seen from some reddit threads/interview translations (it's a bit of an "allegedly" so take that with a grain of salt): 1) You can choose your faction at about the half way point of the game. 2) The game apparently ends around Chi Bi 3) One full playthrough should take you about 20 hours plus and there are "multiple endings" (though I don't know wether that just means one ending for each faction or if there are hypotheticals) 4) In story mode there may only 10 playable characters (the protagonist and 3 officers per faction)

It's going to be hard to go back to the original ones after playing this one and I hope they have free mode where you can pick whoever you want. And I hope Lu Lingqi has her cross halberds back, I loved those. And please for the love of God... No clones... Or if anything, I'd rather have less character's with fleshed out move sets.

There’s plenty that looks great but there’s also a lot of concerns. Especially when it comes to characters and move sets. I’m fine with them giving a more detailed look at less eras and continuing the history through sequels but I’d still like new characters introduced and more of the old being playable if there in that era (not just fancy looking npcs). Alittle worried about the aging of characters as they seem to have picked certain characters to do that with but not others. Also I think this could make Warriors Orochi sequels more relevant if they allow all newly adapted characters from origins and also allow those adapted to the possible sequels and future SW to allow you to play with them all no matter the era.

I don't want to say that this feels like they took what was best about all their other games and integrated it into this one, but it really does seem like Koei has learned from DW9, AND their time with the musou spinoff games (Hyrule Warriors/AoC, ,Fire Emblem Warriors, Persona 5 Strikers!!!, etc). I'm genuinely excited about this entry. I'm probably not as cautious as I should be, but I've enjoyed nearly every single warrior game to some extent while understanding the shortcomings. Modern Koei has been doing a lot that gives me hope, and the previews to origins... well, I'm happy to find a lack of disappointment.

They need to make combat combos slower. DW3 and 4 were perfect. Each combo is slow and significant. New DW combats are too flashy and fast. Making combat cheap. Also bring back bodyguards!! Those were awesome.

I’m really trying not to get swept up in the hype train but it’s just looking so cool. It feels so good being eager and excited for new dynasty warriors again. Stuff like dueling and the new tactics are all so cool. Also they did confirm in some extra screenshots shown that you will get to choose sides in the story and change some events. The image itself showed a couple officers from each of the 3 kingdoms so I can’t tell if they only mean you get to pick wei, wu, or shu or if it’ll go even further with choices and what ifs like joining the yellow turbans or Dong zhuo. A channel called playmaker has videos on some more stuff.

I hope to every God in existence the playable characters don't have cloned movesets because I hate that. That will make me skip the game. I won't mind if some characters shares the same weapon types as long their attacks are unique.

When i saw they brought back Bodyguards i was super excited missed them so much the Bodyguard system was awesome tho i hope you can upgrade them like before. I remember you only start with 1 body guard and they where a peasant warrior then you upgrade to 8 body guards and upgraded the type general guards.

There’s a lot of good stuff here. Battles actually look like battles, great formations, tactical decisions need to be made. Combat is fluid and you definitely feel powerful. While Musous look powerful the flair is gone since it’s just 1 massive attack. SSX gives me some hope that musous will still have personality in them. A few grips, being ball and chained to some dude when all of your faves share the stage with him sucks. It looks like they are implementing the fate summon system with OCs where you can only play with them for a limited time. I hope the MC is customizable or interesting if we are locked in with him

This already looks leagues above 9. I dont mind them trying to reinvent the wheel at this point, as long as it works out. I can assume, whatever they have done with this engine is intended to be used moving foralward in the main saga, so it makes sense they would downscale playable MCs to amplify the field tactics and slow the flow of battle a little bit. No game is perfect, but i am hyped how they are taking little bits from all previous titles to make this game the ultimate trial run for the series future.

the Squad orders for Fire arrow attack and Cavalry charge strategy are probably going to be the most used Unit strategy skills for tactical advantages. using Fire arrow attack before engaging a enemy will be useful to weaken them before charging in and the Cavalry charge looks great for disrupting enemies when they are in large numbers.

It's ridiculous that we are asked to play as a non-customizable OC when this very franchise was literally one of the first franchises to ever introduce a meaningful character creator. I don't care if they can't redo all the cutscenes to incorporate C.A.W., but our C.A.W. could at least be what we see during gameplay... Without at least that much I'll only buy it once it's in the bargain bin and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Koei is shooting themselves in the foot so badly.

Alright i may be a lil scattershot myself here so lets see The animations definitly need some polishing on some aspectd but god daaaaang overall looking great. So far i am still rather optimistic but importantly they better have Free Mode and what I heard from some others it may not have coop (couch or online) which honestly is like disregarding one of the Warriors games foundational features. I really hope they are just keeping it tightly chested (not revealing those) and want to show off the engine being pushed to its limit but it be a shame if they didnt add that. Also the roster better not be overly cut down but that may be a sacrifice if they do that the uniqueness of each general has to be apparent. Like Im still hyped snd wanna get my hands on the game but i dont want also my concerns to be unheard, as we get closer I hope the game has still its important footings. Now to more of this yeah im starting to see a lot of DW9 just trying to ne better in a way while also using as mentioned in the first trailer many mechanics or components they tried in the other games. Although if thats the fact they could do the different weapons and combo styles like they did in Arslan Warrior of legends where there are similar weapons but how the character used it was different Got a lot more thoughts but dont wanna post an entire wall of them

Excellent take on what've seen so far, ireally dig the combat system and overall battlefield atmosphere. However, what is a shame is the fact that they revealed that only 9 companions are going to be playable "temporarily" even though they made 47 new amazing designs (confirmed officers) to just let us play 9 of them (and we don't even know if they have unique movesets since they share the protag's weapons). What truly hypes me up is that the game is gonna be story-driven (from the pre yellow turban rebellion up to Chibi which they promised us that it won't be as short as we think). They also confirmed that they are not planning a sequel (probably because they may work on DW10 depending on the feedback they receive from all the new/revamped features they are trying with Origins)

Ok so basically origins is gonna be a spin off. Ok got it. It's not DW10, but I believe that koei tecmo will make it if the feedback from origins is good and sales are good for the game. The only thing i dont like is that we're stuck with a character that cannot be changed except for its weapons. When i say that i wanted a reduced playable roster i didn't mean cut the entire playable roster down to 9. Therefore i dont believe that a free mode is gonna happen since we only have 9 characters we can play as. Most likely tecmo koei will make DLC weapons and playable characters. I really hope that this game breathes new and extended life into the series, but the new huge chnages do scare me. Only time will tell if the game is worth a buy or not.

I preferred the Empires games because I liked the strategy element and being able to form your own team, give commands etc. (my favorite being DW5 Empires and SW2 Empires which came out around the same time). Also I think the upgraded graphics of DW5 Empires on 360 was a huge improvement but DW6 and onward they used this extra fidelity to just give characters really cringy outfits that had way too much going on and looked kind of cartoony I remember I really enjoyed DW2 as well because you were able to rank up 8 really OP body guard units and just wreak havoc on any enemy general

First what take my eye, it's generic officers wearing armors from Empires in officer creation. It's maybe just not a full version, I really want more kind models for officers even based on what Kingdom. Like Wu officers will more look like sailors or pirates, Wei like biggest and richest kingdom got good looking armor officers and Shu some got maybe look like hobos who wearing cheap bamboo armor.

Im concerned about the Nameless Hero. He looks like the bland default Model of the past character creators. I mean if this is supposed to be us, the gamer, with our decision of how this Story unfolds or the way we go then i dont understand the Lack of the character creator. But maybe it turns out that we dont have a Real choice and it's more like the typical pseudo choice that doesnt change the result at all. If thats the case i dont quite understand why they didnt just go all the way and make the hero a fully fledged out original character. But the way it seems to be it's again a bit of both that in the end is enjoyed by no one. Never understood this type of decision making. 😅

I'd love to share some of my thoughts 1. SILVER FOX SUN JIAN IS BACK SO HYPE THEY FIXED THAT BAD DW9 DESIGN 2. I really hope there is another mode where you can play as the rest of the characters. In my opinion the main draw of these games for me is playing as different characters and maxing them out and all that. 3. Since they are going the avatar character route I sure hope their will be a way to customize them and not just keep them this default look. Also different genders would be nice 4. I agree Female generic officers would be really cool 5. So excited about the base system. One of the cool things about the old DW games was slowly taking down gates and bases and stuff to lower enemy morale. Giving objectives and stuff like SW would be a nice addition too and this feels like it's going to be like that. 6. Charging armies is actually so hype. Imagine how much of a real battlefield it will feel like now with being about to storm bases and rush armies I can just imagine how that would feel to play. 7. The duel system is back and I could not be happier. Having it be an option in DW4 is great and I'm glad it's back. The way the crowd moves out of the way for you it already looks more organically placed in the game than in DW4. 8. Cloned weapons and movesets I feel like are a given at this point. But maybe it will be reduced do to the most likely smaller character roster 9. It's Koei so no doubt on the numerous costume and weapon DLCs 10. I understand why there will be no Jin of course but I sob at the thought of no Wang Yunji All and all with this new gameplay trailer I'm much more excited and optimistic than I was initially.

On one hand, I'm keen for the more old school elements. Oh the other, it feels like yet another example of Koei missing a golden opportunity. Why not just make this a modern destiny mode? With games like bg3 making so many branching pathes, I feel like there is no excuse, ESPECIALLY seeing as I've heard this game won't include Jin. Imagine, picking a character to serve under. Training with them, levelling yourself and adopting your fighting style. Maybe even specialising e.g. becoming a great warrior with Guan yu or a strategist with Zhou yu. As you progress, you become stronger, upgrading your character and unlocking new tactics, strategems, moves and the super musou move. Make critical decisions, do I stick with Shu, or go to Wu? Imagine what an amazing story beat it would be to originally serve under Guan yu, defecting to Wu at chi bi and then slaying Guan yu at fan. Idk, maybe it'll be awesome but it's Koei, the kings of missed opportunities.wont be pre ordering

@@hurricane7727 I mean cool, then your story could have been sticking with Guan yu. Helping evacuate civilians at changban, riding out with Guan Yu at Guan Du to slay Wen Chou and Yan Liang. With the story mode for your character ending in an epic last stand finale at Fan castle. Sadly, Im pretty confident origins will be pretty generic with its implementation

There are no such things as “clones” in this game because you dont technically play as other characters. The 9 “available” work more like summons that you get to control temporarily. This game isn’t a niche arcade hack n slash anymore, but more of a JRPG/ARPG

I’ll be honest . If this game allows you to play as famous officers in free mode and also allows you to co-op play with a buddy online /couch this game might be better than 4 (which in my opinion is the best in this series )

I am not really interested in DW Origins. It truly does feel like Koei have forgotten how to make a good Warriors game, and what I have seen of this one doesn't fill me with any hope so far. Seems like they're trying really hard to reinvent the wheel to get a larger audience, and just pissing off the one they already had. This is one game I would never preorder, and it definitely waits to be seen how it is once it officially comes out.

I totally get that perspective, and I partially share it with you. I think this game might be aiming to attract and appeal to a newer audience, which is great for creating newer Musou fans and allowing the series to live on But it can also simultaneously leave the original fans behind with making so many changes, which isn’t really a great thing at all. I’m excited and open to a new DW game, and willing to accept gameplay changes, just as long as the changes made in the game aren’t lazy or heavily filled with predatory microtransactions

I absolutely hate the stupid SM 3, 4 and 5 system of overpowered heroes + gayish characters + hero swapping midgame In SM2 and DW4 and 5 you HAD TO PUT YOUR effort into making your character strong, and even peons felt like danger. This gave HUGE reward to a fellow gamer surpassing all challenges. In SM3 and SM 4 and 5 you just press one button and all your heroes fly through the battlefield killing everyone, this is INSANELY CASUAL and stupid. If they remove those stupid mechanics in new DN, many gamers will consider buying it. The "gaming" industry still hasn't made a game better than Dawn of War Dark Crusade.
