void staff feels like bait in most games on most AP champions. Cryptbloom just seems better. champions base Magic reistence is usually lower than armor to begin with meaning you don't need as much % magic pen (flat magic pen is better for most of the game), plus most people don't build magic res in their games as most magic res items arent very attractive. the adc wont build MR, the midlaner probably wont build MR, the jungler will probably build health/damage over res, the support wont build MR unless they are a tank (which is rare). The only role that will likely stack MR is the tank top but odds are they wont build much as most people don't like playing tanks (they'll likely have 1 MR item at most unless your whole team is AP). So the bonus 10% Magic Pen from void staff is kind of pointless if the enemy doesn't have high MR and the extra 10 AP isnt great either. Cryptbloom on the other hand gives you AP, %Pen AND 15 ability haste, plus it heals the whole team if you get a take down (assist or last hit on a champion kill), and its cheaper. The 15 haste is important because most high damage mage Items (especially the flat pen items) don't have haste on them, so odds are your build probably does a lot of damage but your cooldowns are longer than they should be. if you only have 15 haste by the time you have 4 items as an AP champ, your missing more damage than void staff can make up for just due to how long it takes for your skills to come off cooldown for the next rotation. Also means you're likely to die more often if your utility skills are always on cooldown. 1 haste item + cryptbloom means by your 3rd or 4th item you probably have 30/35 (possibly 40-50 with runes) haste while still having both flat and % magic pen which is far more ideal than having slightly higher damage but needing to wait an extra 1-2 seconds per ability which is important on most AP champs as they don't have strong normal attacks to fill the time between skills. TLDR - cryptbloom > void staff as ability haste is more important than an extra 10% Magic pen in most of your games.

Hmm, perhaps it was because of hail of blades? You can easily proc that 3 hits and increase your movement speed in a short burst with it?

Don't learn your ultimate as soon as you get it; instead, hold onto it so the enemy can't visually see it, and then learn it.
