The starters are made to do that because this is what happens, and there is no reduction in engine life.

True, but starters are a lot more durable and reliable than they used to be. Before electric starters were commonplace in cars, one actually had to crank the engine by hand.

what kind of extension cord do you mean? You can barely find wired starter kits than can deliver 300 Amps, so usable for small engines not for big ones

I plug mine in under 45F and cycle the (working) glow plugs a few times before starting. I can't afford a new truck and my Duramax has just over 400,000 on it.
