This might be an old design, but it is aerodynamically great. So modernizing it, is a really good idea. Stealth may be important in the beginning of a conflict, or even a single campaign, but once air superiority is achieved, gen 4+ is more than enough. @@rockaddicthamburg8599 absolutely. Not every mission requires the use of an F-15 when a lightweight fighter like the F-16 can get the job done. Same goes for our F-22 and F-35 platforms. That being said, the sensor fusion that the F-35 brings to the mission is unrivaled. It never even has to fire a shot while making NATOs 4th gen platforms even more survivable, not to mention working alongside the F-22. The F-35 is fucking SkyNet. F-15EX is becoming a game-changer when paired with F-35, the new engines have an insane power-output getting near bomber level, they can carry massive hypersonic glide bombs previously only fieldable by bombers, they now have near the range of many bombers, & because they are not worried about detection, the power output from those engines brings the electronic warfare & jamming capabilities of the F-15 EX into AWACS territory for range. F/A-18 Super Hornet is behind the capabilites of the F-15EX EXCEPT where you need carrier takeoff & landing, it weighs more from heavier catapult-arrest landing gear which has to hold the weight of the fighter from full throttle to dead stop 00s of 000s of times over & over again, the weight penalty increases cost & reduces range & weapons loadout, it is a very capable fighter but if you don't need carrier capability the F-15 EX is better on every front, except indirectly the FA-18 heavily reinforced frame & landing-gear will survive bad rough landing strips better than F-15EX. This is what the Finnish air-force did with legacy Hornet FA-18 they operated off 200 widened highway sections, debris & all, 15 minutes after a road was closed for training hot refueling & rearming, they would drop the Hornets into steep short disbursed landing strips surrounded by mountains that are hard for Russians to find & bomb, & on some short strips they used mobile cable-arresting gear so they can land, refuel & relaunch Hornets from disbursed highway airfields FASTER than the famed Swedish Gripen, which only does that by having a fraction of the speed, kinetic performance, range & missile loadout of Hornet so the Gripen has to land & refuel/rearm 2x as often as Hornet.

@@donquixote1502 You need to expand your news sources beyond the SAAB marketing department and Swedish export propaganda. During Pitch Black 2024 exercises in Australia the Thai Air Force Gripens were defeated by Philippine Air Force FA 50PH at a ratio of 70/30. This was widely reported at the time and it is widely believed that poor performance of the Gripens vs the performance of F16 variants from other countries was a significant factor in the Philippine government switching its preference from the Gripen to the F16 within days of the conclusion of the exercises. The exercises also highlighted to the Philippines that the majority of its most powerful neighbors were flying the F16 vs just one, much less powerful neighbor flying the Gripen meaning that aircraft and maintenance facility interoperability with neighboring countries also played a role in the decision. Of course, it is possible that the Thai pilot training was not getting the best out of their aircraft, and it is also possible that they have systems that do not work optimally with international forces. Ultimately, whatever the reasons, the Thai Gripens were not even close to the other air force aircraft types, and that was surprising to all involved. It was unfortunate for SAAB that the exercises fell right at the time the Philippine government was making its decision on aircraft type to purchase. However, the way China is bullying the Philippines at the moment, they had no choice but to make a rapid decision, and to choose the aircraft they believed was best capable of defending themselves against a very aggressive China. So, sir, you might not like it, but your precious Gripen DID get defeated in Australia in 2024. Your snide remarks about Spitfires and Mustangs demonstrated that you are not a serious commenter and your lack of knowledge of international exercises just makes you look out of touch. The motivation for the F-15EX was more than what was listed here. From what I've read elsewhere, the F-15's payload is much larger than the F-35, and it also has more mounting hard points. This complements the F-35 by serving as a 'bomb/missile truck. Additionally it can accommodate missiles (such as the hypersonic variants) that are simply too big to fit on an F-35. Given its long, stellar track record and every indication it's still pretty much in its prime, why not keep it in production?

As a F16 full scale simulator guy I use the realistic BMS4.37u4 as a platform to fly simulated missions. What struck me every time in A2A situations is the somewhat limited capabilities of the AIM-120 in term of range. We all see platform improvals, Like F35 etc, but the weapon dev is lagging. When I have to maneuver to get into the AIM-120 lethal envelope I waste valuable time and extend exposure of being shot down. Why can my fox3 not be part of the link16 system after it is send? It could make it stealthy with guidance from multiple airborne radars or even Sentry, and find the target autonomously when in closer range. just a thought

Hey Guy, you forgot to mention the small 20mm Vulcan CANON. Just a tiny oversight, I'm sure. In pilot terms, it's the difference between apple pie and pie alamode! In the 104 registered kills, everyone would love to know how many were with blazing guns?

Please Canada had invented a fighter in the early 1950s but politicians for some reason had it scrapped. I’d say it scared the hell out of the Americans. The Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow was a delta-winged interceptor aircraft designed and built by Avro Canada. The CF-105 held the promise of Mach 2 speeds at altitudes exceeding 50,000 feet and was intended to serve as the Royal Canadian Air Force's primary interceptor into the 1960s and beyond.

Literally they just need to make the EW pods from the f18- Growler work with the EPAWSs system and the f-15 would have a new lease on life. It would be brilliant to have something as big as the f-15 be the one hunting SAMs instead of being hunted by them. Add in the ability to carry the aim 174b for crazy BVR and that will easily get the airforce by until the NGAD actually goes into production.

What is the value of twin vertical stabilizers vs just the one on most aircraft? More drag, more parts, more things that can go wrong. There must be a strong benefit.

When you pair 5 each F-15EXs which are essentially Bomb and Missile trucks together with an F-22 stealth fighter. The invisible F-22 hunts, while the EX kills.

The F15EX sounds to me like a great idea. It is presumably less expensive than the F35 and has the capability to do a myriad of tasks that are required of the USAF. Although it may not have all the capabilities of the F35 or the F22, these capabilities are not always required. You don't need a shotgun to kill a fly, a flyswatter will do. Not to belittle the F15EX by this analogy but you don't always require a tank to do a task. Sometimes a rifle is all you need. And rifles are less expensive than tanks. Besides, Like the A10 Warthog, the F15 Eagle is an icon of the US armed forces and I would like to see their presence preserved everything else being equal.
@dsmoke1972Ай бұрын
at its production rate, I think the F35 is becoming slightly cheaper.

Is there a good reason the new F15EX doesn't have angled vertical stabilizers to lower it's radar signature?

Until it takes on the F -22! Several years ago, six F-15s were "shot down" in a live simulation. The F-15s didn't know the F-22 was there until it was far too late. The new F-15 is capable of shooting down anything Russia and China have, including the SU-57 so-called Russian Stealth Plane, and the Chinese J-20 is easy to visually track due to its dirty engine exhaust. It's like the wake of a stealth ship on the water; if the wake is there, so is a ship regardless of a valid RCS reading. The air-to-air performance is not the problem; evading more robust anti-aircraft missile batteries are the only real threat to the F-15s. The payload is amazing; it rivals or surpasses the payload of an A-10 Warthog.

I believe the F-16 was the first with fly by wire when it went into service in 1980.

Why wasn't the twin tails angled slightly to reduce radar cross section?
@pirosszirom8998Ай бұрын
The directional stability of the machine is probably not satisfactory, which is why 2 oversized control planes were needed, the tilting of which would impair the efficiency.

If you think Russia and China are terrified by anything the West does, you don’t know Russia or China. During WW2, Russia (the USSR) lost 27 million people and China lost 20 million people. That kind of loss hardens people. Concerned is probably a better descriptor than terrified, YFI.
