I worked for Saab back in the day and got a tour of FAPS at the Newark port. That was the first time I was told about how bad the factory paint jobs are on some of the Italian exotics. Some of these cars that folks believe are all original, actually have full re-sprays before they went to the dealership because the paint was so bad when the cars unloaded off the ship/container.

While this is the case for your normal colors such as rosso corsa. Your special colors like triple layer and custom paints. Those cars get brought to an off site vendor named Zanasi. This is why colors like triple layer yellow will cost $30k extra than lets say giallo modena.

One thing when I was a detailer back in the day was actually to try and see if they could be comfortable without a cut and polish because that removes material. Some things it can be very difficult like with thinner coats because only so much can do. Even more if a metallic single stage. The metal flake will settle out when paint is applied. so when you polish, you thin the color, and leave the flake which will create a shift in color where it can thin out unevenly.

I'm not a paint expert but I'm not sure that's how it works. For the clear to adhere without artifacts, the surface would have to be sanded most likely. Not to mention the hours of prep work in removing badges/emblems, trim, bumpers, mirrors, spoilers, etc to get every crevice. But yeah, aside from that, the clearcoat thickness might be too thin from the factory to properly prep it for more clear on top without damaging the basecoat.

@@bwofficial1776 Teslas are a joke for the price you pay. They are literally built as poorly as a 90s Kia Sephia. Panel gaps that even GM in the 50s wasn't that far off, plastic pieces coming off on the lot, parts not finished correctly, buttons that simply weren't wired up, and so on. Quality control seems to be literally missing and they are leaving it up to the dealer to fix during prep. Plus the god-awful paint and manufactured smooth as vinyl leather (eye-bleed white or flat black). As if slathering the Tupperware interior with some leather magically fixes things and makes it "premium". Yes, it's only skin-deep beauty, don't touch it too much. Honest truth: I went to the dealer in town, looked at and test-drove a Tesla model 3 and it was... OK until I drove 3 blocks down the street - not even 5 minutes and did the same in the new Audi EV. It was like eating Top Ramen and then going to a real ramen shop. That stark of a difference in how it was presented, put together, and attention to detail. And we're not even talking about things like the hollow sounding doors and creaks and rattles - the Audi was basically a vault by comparison.

It’s too bad everything on the road these days is white, black and silver/gray with a tiny smattering of blue and red. We’ve gone back to the gilded age where beautiful hues are only available on expensive cars. The rest of us get drab. Probably due in large part to most people leasing these days. When the cars come back the dealers want them to appeal to the widest audience. That said my wife’s old Passat’s silver paint was thick, durable and had a lot of depth. It buffed out spectacularly.

It's absolutely crazy for a high end manufacturer to save cost by cutting the quantity of paint laid down. If they're really penny pinching like that, just charge customers more. I cannot imagine a single Ferrari customer who would be unwilling to pay the extra material and manufacturing time cost to lay down more paint.

For a company that gatekeep's their cars you would think they would keep a high standard of production in every step. Buying a Ferrari comes with a level of expectation, similar to a Rolls Royce. If the quality isn't there then you're better off buying something else.

This is why I always get one of the special colors that is a tri-stage or pearl or similar paint. Simply because there's a ton more material and it's going to hold up better. And this is on a standard commuter car.

@@todthebod I had this exact same worry when someone keyed ( OK , more like did an art project on an entire side with their keys ) my car. After a lot of pointed questions, I found a place that dealt with classic cars and knew how to do multi-stage and candy type paint. So it is possible. The huge advantage, though, is that my car at 8 years old looks only about 2 years old. The paint is holding up many times better than the shoddy clear-only paints. The same can be said with pearl coats - that extra paint layer results in 2-3x the life over normal paint. This type of paint used to be standard on luxury cars and now it's spray and forget about it. You kind of expect that on a $25K car, but not on a $250K car.

honestly doesn't surprise me one of the big auto makers would have better paint. they do such a higher volume that their equipment most likely is better to start with, and better maintained. if you're painting a couple hundred or a thousand cars a day, having ANY kind of fault is going to REALLY suck, versus painting 1 to 5 cars a day. Look at the (financial, logistical) nightmare that gets created when a single bolt isn't tightened to spec and tens to hundreds of thousands of cars need to be recalled to fix that.

@Lucas Blanchard The entire truck would need to be wet sanded in order to remove orange peel. And after that you would be left with much less paint on your truck.
