Improved and Superior Critical both look a lot better with a reroll every turn. Exciting stuff!

My favorite class upgraded! This is perfect y'all. I'm a lifelong player but I love simplicity. This will hopefully push the champion to the spot it deserves in the community

Glad the champion is getting some improvements. Compared to many other subclasses in 5E, Champion always felt like it was really lacking. The new features sound pretty good.

Excellent. Much better than the revised Champion I had cooked up in 2021. It certainly really needed one.

That reroll mechanic is interesting and incredibly powerful! Better to use on attack rolls than damage rolls. And with a single die, the larger the die the better (much better on a D10 or D12 than one on the 6 sided dice from a greatsword). But this also means more options to impact stuff. Combine with pushes, or trips, or grapples and you’ll succeed a lot more. Should also mesh really well with the feat that adds battle maneuvers. Now you are more likely for that … disarm or trip or whatever to happen. I could see (incredibly late game) multiclass potential here, too.

Heroic Warrior Is pretty powerful. Basically you have at least 1 reroll per turn of combat.

I agree with the new surprise rule, though maybe I would additionally give bonuses in certain ambush situations of course (one attack with Advantage if unseen, maybe a bit of movement, etc.).

I think you always have advantage if you're doing an unseen strike. So a total party of stealthy characters, with DM permission, can do a lot of meticulous setup to effectively get a 'free turn' before initiative.

Not sure if this would make the Champion a more convincing options than even the current subclasses for Fighter. It is definitely a good step but many of those abilities come far in the class. Who here often plays on the 15+ lvl campaigns ? Most of them end at 10-14. Having a reroll for crit fishing is nice but still not as impactful as a Battle Master who can clearly manipulate the battle field in so many different way straight up at lvl 3 Fighter. The new champion at the same level wouldn't get that much comparatively. Even if the Remakable Athlete comes in at lvl 3 with the extra crit, that's a 10% chance of getting extra movement per attack, but how good is that feature if your target isn't dead ? Globally speaking, this feels a bit bland, not as much as the current Champion but the changes aren't that dramatic. To compare, they dropped the spell schools limitation for Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickers, just that alone opens up both subclasses to be acting in very different ways and have access to a whole lot more of options. Meanwhile the new Champion can maybe run further away if there is a critical hit. Not that much different from using a Maul with the new weapon mastery. Instead how about this: - Allow the new Champion to have better/improved Fighting Style, like adding half your Str bonus rounded down on top of base Str bonus when you are using the Great Weapon Fighting style like back in 3.x ed. - Allow the crit hit on a 19+ at lvl 3, 18+ at lvl 8-10 and 17+ at lvl 18. - Give the Champion expertise in Athletics, he is supposed to be better than anyone else at this. Currently a Bard or Rogue would be just as if not more athletic than a Fight Champion. Just those 3 changes alone would make the Champion subclass a lot more convincing while still keeping its identity.

Wait so: You sit hidden with a crossbow, aiming at a surprised enemy. You attack to start the combat, only to roll a bad initiative roll and then get your turn after the person who you haven't even attacked yet? Seems weird

Love the Survivor feature but I feel like having it at Level 18 makes it a bit meh, having it as a level 14 feat and something like changing the Crits to 18-20 at Level 18 would be better or another way for them to gain advantage on attacks/boost their damage once per short rest

The Champion was easily the weakest subclass in the entirety of 5th edition, so I'm really glad to hear these changes. It always bothered me that the "default" subclass of the most iconic class barely improved it.

@Lardo137 free movement that doesn't provoke opportunity attacks is already powerful add on to a champion fighter who has a higher crit chance and potentially extremely powerful weapons. Having so any time they kill a creature they get free movement is busted badly because it means if a dm likes horde fights the fighter will be wiping the field basically single handedly especially if they used action surge

@@zaccarpenter621 Real question: Have you actually played 5e before? Because from everything you're saying, it genuinely sounds like you have never played an actual game of 5e. It's gonna blow your mind when you realize Fireball and Hypnotic Pattern exists. Or Spirit Guardians, or Summon spells, or Wish.
@zaccarpenter621
@zaccarpenter621 Ай бұрын
@Lardo137 all those spells can be avoided or have their damage reduced via saves. Only way to reduce weapon damage is to give resistances and those spells don't grant free movement on a success.

Not only did you not add any tactical depth to the subclass, but you also ruined the surprise round. Great job! You didn't even implement your idea properly: why not make it so that for a surprise round all opponents make their turns only after the players. Give this mechanic some impact, you know, since for real warfare ambushes are kinda a big deal after all
@waifusmith4043
@waifusmith4043 Ай бұрын
Giving disadvantage to initiative rolls is much better than literally skipping peoples turns entirely. Meaning if you get ambushed by goblins or kobolds you'll still get a turn, you're just more likely to go after them. Is it a perfect fix? Probably not but to say it's "ruined" is a stretch.
@dmitrygavrilik52
@dmitrygavrilik52 Ай бұрын
@@waifusmith4043 but it should be surprise after all. The initiative does nothing in most of the cases to be honest. It isn't OSR where the first strike is also the last pretty often. So right now ambushes are just meaningless. That's why I said ruined
@waifusmith4043
@waifusmith4043 Ай бұрын
"initiative does nothing" when in combat being able to go first is a big thing in setting the pace of the combat. If you took out reactions from those surprised, then maybe that'd be better because it still shows that narratively they're not fully prepared for combat. Being surprised as a player, when you roll decent on initiative and basically being told you can't act because you're surprised sucks. Additionally the old surprise rules trivializes encounters because they can't react. Making the other side act last not only shows they're scrambling to react, but also makes surprise more balanced which means you can use it more often. 2k14 assassin's feature was so bad because it relied on a "condition" that literally breaks encounters. Ambushes means your side gets to go first, while this might be a lackluster way of implementing a better surprise rule, because it's not as crippling to the players I think overall this is a better version of the rules. If you don't like it at your table, then just use the old rules or make your own.
