Join me onboard a BRAND NEW Fiji Airways Airbus A350-900 XWB trip report in BUSINESS CLASS from Nadi International Airport (Fiji) to Sydney (Australia). Just an update for everyone. Fiji Airways have contacted me for specific feedback and it’s a real credit to them that they’re keen to take note of criticism and work to improve the customer experience. I’ve responded with a detailed email outlining the areas that they did well in (and it’s a damn awesome plane and seat) as well as the areas for improvement. Hopefully they’ll keep working at things and I’ll have a much better experience when I fly with them again (as I loved visiting Fiji and will be sure to visit again in the future.) And apologies I called them Fiji Airlines instead of their correct name 'Fiji Airways'.

Bula Paul and vinaka for the video. I’m glad that you enjoyed your time in Fiji and that you got to experience the renowned Fijian hospitality. I’ve been lucky enough to spend a fair bit of time in Fiji so can confidently say that the crew on this flight was definitely the exception rather than the rule. Fiji Airways certainly isn’t in the class of Emirates or Qantas but they are working hard to become a key player in the region. I look forward to your other FJ videos!

I completely agree with your comments about a good crew making the difference on a flight, really of any length. I typically fly economy and I am always impressed by a flight crew that can remain personable while serving a full flight. Even a brief interaction a friendly crew member can make the flight experience better. Great report.

I am Fijian and I do agree with you, sometimes the crew forget that they are there for the people. They are no different from waiters and waitresses, in order to sell, communication is very important.

There was a lot of publicity in Fiji about the first one particularly so I think there was an element of apprehension within the crew themselves? I would like to think that perhaps now that they have done quite a few trips and are quite familiar with the plane, that the initial teething service issues would have disappeared.

Thanks for providing us with our first look at this beautiful new aircraft in service Paul. I`m so sorry that the cabin crew were so disinterested and sub-standard, and ponder why they too weren`t in the spirit of the occasion. Even the very best flight in every other way is ruined by such a crew. I flew business a week ago and it was fantastic. The airport was painfully slow but the flight from Melbourne to Nadi was good. A short flight so I was ok with the bed not laying fully flat. The flight from Nadi to LAX was flawless. I've flown business with Qatar, Qantas, Air NZ and now Fiji and I'd put them on par with Air New Zealand. The lounge at Nadi was great too...the food was excellent. The big issue for me was that I had a long layover and I had to collect my luggage and they wouldn't check it so I was in the airport for 10 hours. If I had been able to access the lounge it would have been a kinder layover.

I've flown FJ many, many times (all of it in Y), generally the crews were friendly enough I have found. However I guess with any airline, sometimes you just come across those who seem disinterested in what they are paid to do. However, I am still keen on redeeming some points for the FJ A350 (in J) in the near future :) . When Fiji Airways got their A350, they did a fly by around the entire country at low altitude which was pretty awesome. I was there when they did the same with the A330s. It was well marketed with many locals out with the country;s flags and what not :D

So many good airlines can be let down by inconsistency with the crew on the day... Why is it that on one flight the crew can be very interactive and friendly, and on another of the same carrier, indifferent or a bit distant. Are they tired for some reason? This not only applies to Fiji Airways, but on every airline I have been on, including 5 star rated carriers. The A350 looks great, but the economy seat appeared very small, or was this because of the wide angle lens on the camera making them appear like this?

Friendliness, attentiveness, positive attitude & smiles are all easy gestures from any service oriented business. Even if the flight attendants recognize Paul as an airline flight critic, who may have badly critiqued someone, professionalism at all times is mandatory, as employees represent the airline. Substandard performance by a flight crew in a premium cabin should be grounds for a refund. Given that every seat on the aircraft arrives at the destination at exactly the same time, the premium cabin customers are obviously paying for service and comfort. If the service and/or comfort is not delivered, there should be recourse. Of course, that would never happen, but all you can do is spend your travel dollars elsewhere and spread the word about your experience.

Thanks for the awesome video Paul. Loved it!.....I had a pretty bad experience on Fiji Airways (flying Business Class from Sydney to Nadi). It was a Boeing 737-800 though. One of the flight attendants serving the Business Class section did not even look towards me in the entire flight. No Hi, No Goodbye. Nothing. I was not too surprised because I have experienced that before on Fiji Airways. Last year (flying Auckland - Nadi), a flight attendant bumped into me and did not even turn around to apologise. Cool flight deck! Very spacious looking. I also really liked the Pasifika-themed lounge with that great looking living wall. A shame about the lack of service onboard, though. It seems like you were very fair in your review. I've just come off a long-haul experience on AirNZ and the service was excellent (friendly, proactive and they used my name the whole time), so I know what a huge difference that can make to your feelings about an airline. Cheers for another great review. Looking forward to your reviews of the wee planes, too!

Cheers Michael. Yep those living walls are amazing and really give the lounge a 'Pacificesque' theme as you said. Air NZ always have amazing service. To be honest their business seats are average but the service always makes up for it.

I totally enjoyed your review u took that time to showcase an economy seat though u were really travelling in business. I also agree the A350 is an amazing aircraft and think all airlines should have one in their fleet ( never going to happen😂). I think your comments on the crew wasn’t harsh but fair and honest and they failed to represent the magnificent aircraft they working in or maybe they didn’t want to work that day 🤣. Again great review and keep flying safely.

What a majestic bird, but however good a hard product can be, the soft product - which includes the service - makes or breaks a flight. In fact, I think a disappointing service would be worse than a less comfortable seat in J. Thanks for sharing Paul.
