With Waters’ vision, Pink Floyd became one of the most influential rock bands ever. The group's breakthrough album, "The Dark Side of the Moon," spent 15 consecutive years on the Billboard chart, and "The Wall" was certified platinum 23 times. The iconic album comes to life in a new film, "Roger Waters The Wall," and follows Waters' personal story stemming from the loss of his father in WWII when he was just a baby. Waters joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss the new movie and his career.

+Michael Keplinger The Division bell was okay, but it lacked Roger Waters creativity. But you can also see that the Final Cut and the Wall lacks influence from Gilmour, Wright and Mason. They were at their best from Atom heart mother to Animals in my opinion.

Jonatan Olsén I love all records, but you are right. On Animals there was still a lot musical influence by Gilmour, Wright and Mason. It should have been just like that on later records as well.

What he means is that Waters speaks out against the excesses of capitalism (while still capitalizing on it and paying all his employees handsomely). In his addled mind, that is equivalent to being 'a Communist piece of filth'. But what he is really saying is that HE is filthy and would like for us to hose him down.
@roguescoop
@roguescoop 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheSimonScowl I don't think that is quite right. Waters does not focus specifically on economic disparities, though certainly inequality impacts and is a part of the issues he DOES tackle. Roger is more concerned with human rights, human dignity and justice. He speaks out against injustice mainly. That is why he is fighting for Julian Assange and for Steven Donzinger. You won't hear many anti-capitalist rants from him despite the fact that he is the man who wrote "Money."

Moreover I've always feeled "closed" to Syd too, some kind of empathy... This band was marvelous, for me the "good" floyd are from Piper to the Wall... After that it starts to become the "usual pop-rock band"...

TheDonmystery I really love the seriousness and deep lyrics from Roger, I like his POV of life, he's got interesting things to say. A real 'intellectual' and yes, it goes far beyond music. I think he's a very sensitive and emotional person, and to the opposite of the "orher" Roger (Syd), he can cope with reality and have the "will" to fight... I guess that's what broke Syd, extreme sensitivity and emotions.

Roger was an amazing lyricist and in the early days he was actually interested in making interesting music as well. It's too bad Roy Harper didn't take them up on their offer to to him to take over lead vocals. Roger's voice was starting to go even in the late 70s. In terms of the actual music of Pink Floyd, Rick Wright and David Gilmour were more essential to the sound than Roger was. Wright gets precious little credit for that, except from Gilmour himself as of late. Roger may have written the chord progressions on many songs ( on the Wall or WYWH for example) but the actual sonic textures were devised by Gilmour and Wright. That much is clear when you hear the solo work of Gilmour as compared to Roger's solo work. That's not to say Roger's solo stuff isn't great, because it is; Radio Kaos, Pros and Cons and Amused to Death are all brilliant conceptually whereas Gilmour's solo works are musically ( and technically) strong. Gilmour's solo stuff just naturally sounds more Floydian.
@Lasse3
@Lasse3 3 жыл бұрын
What are you on? Roger wrote the lyrics for the entire dark side of the moon, animals, wish you were here, and the wall, as evident by the demo tapes released, waters had basically already made The Wall, himself, prior to approaching the band. He were gonna do 'The wall' a solo album.. Rogers tapes were not mere "chord progressions" He made the concepts from ground up, Gilmour and Co, were nothing more than session musicians to Waters. These are all his concepts and his songs, you may enjoy the musical efforts of Gilmour and Co - with very good reason, but don't be a fool, and downplay Rogers efforts as 'chord progressions'

So forgive me on what may have seemed a bit cryptic..(wow, that came out accurate). But basically what I was trying to say was that I had seen in the newspaper that there was a planned release of Pink Floyd The Wall performed live" and I was so thrilled upon reading that so that I can relive, albeit on a much smaller scale, The concert that at that time I had never seen anything like it, even though I had seen Pink Floyd in concert on two previous consecutive tours. And that show still remains the best concert ever. But after seeing the video on KZbin you can understand why Roger decided not to release the video of the show. Is a little surprising, given that concerts around that time and even earlier I have been released, and in some cases remastered to superb quality,

Is the uploader serious - "breakthrough album - Dark Side..."? So none of the previous 6 albums before it were "breakthrough". Really? Isn't it incredible that despite people having all the information at just a couple of clicks away, they still can't get a grasp of a subject and make the most ludicrous claims and convey blatant mis-information. At this rate the internet generation will soon be saying that the earth is flat!

Filip PF But I wouldn't put commerce before inventive music. Dark Side was very ant-commerce, wasn't it?

Filip PF Considering it was a prog-rock album, it had 4 tracks that were never off US FM radio. Even the track "Money" was a single in many countries. Not in UK, though. They were too cool for that, similarly with Led Zeppelin. That was the big difference gulf in how the music business worked when comparing UK to US. US always needed a single for radio, whereas in UK all you needed was a newspaper add and a few album tracks played on radio just a few times. Plus the simple fact that PF were very much better known throughout the UK and Europe before Dark Side hit the US. Name me one UK band that became huge in US, that hadn't already made it in UK? There's none.

+apollomemories73 Well Def Leppard were actually bigger in the US before they were in the UK prompting alot of my dunce stoner friends to think that they actually came from the US lol..of course they thought the same thing about Led Zeppelin hahaha

Otherman I don't think so as their Rockola EP was quite successful. They were at the forefront of The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal long before you guys ever heard of them. Were all your friends completely illiterate that they couldn't read the music mags telling them that LZ were from England? I find that hard to believe, considering the whole USA rock world had heard of Jimmy Page in USA 1968, touring with The Yardbirds.

I reckon he's ashamed and embarrassed about his past conduct regarding the break up of Pink Floyd. I think he's tried to patch up with Gilmour but without success.

Why revisit the Wall? David Gilmour has consistently put out amazing solo albums and moved on from Pink Floyd. Even though Gilmour could legally play as Pink Floyd, he doesnt. I think The Wall should be left in the past and remembered as the masterpiece it is. Don't mess with something that is already so highly regarded, it will only lead to disappointment.

I think the big reason is how personal The Wall is for Roger. It's his baby. Sure, Gilmour co-wrote a couple of songs off of it, but 98% of it is Roger's life / experience / writing. That being said, and maybe I'm biased, but post-Waters Pink Floyd and Gilmour's solo work doesn't come anywhere close to their work from '68 to '79. That stretch of time, in my opinion, was the work they should all be most proud of. Why not bring The Wall back for another generation? Let us experience what the lucky few got to experience in '81.

+Jessica Weis What on Earth are you talking about? David Gilmour has released _exactly TWO (2)_ studio albums of new music in the last 30 years. You call that "consistently"? Roger Waters has released far more solo work than David Gilmour: 1. _Music From "The Body"_ (with Ron Geesin) 2. _The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking_ 3. _When the Wind Blows_ (half the film soundtrack) 4. _Radio K.A.O.S._ 5. _Amused to Death_ 6. _Ca Ira_ 7. _Flickering Flame_ (contains both new and old material) 8. the singles: "Each Small Candle"; "Hello (I Love You)"; "Leaving Beruit"; "To Kill the Child" David Gilmour has released: 1. _David Gilmour_ 2. _About Face_ 3. _On an Island_ 4. _Metallic Spheres_ (with The Orb) 5. _Rattle That Lock_ Meanwhile, Roger Waters has played many, MANY more solo tours than David Gilmour. And Gilmour plays PLENTY of Pink Floyd songs. > *"Don't mess with something that is already so highly regarded, it will only lead to disappointment."* Well, it actually turned out to be the highest-grossing tour of all time by any solo artist. You're basically wrong on every level. I can't even say "nice try" with any sincerity.

These so-called educated TV personality talking heads will not be remembered 50 years from now. On the other hand, Pink Floyd and Rodger Waters most definitely will likely be remembered 50 years from now. Out of all the intriguing lyrics Pink Floyd has produced the lyric mentioned in the interview has got to be the most misconstrued non highlight.
