New for 2017 - PENN Rival Level Wind Reels and Combos

I bought the Penn Rival 30 LW combo. I have fished with it twice and the base broke. It still is attached to the rod and works. The part that broke is to hook your line, when not in use.

If you have anti reverse issues you can get the clutch and clutch housing from a warfare and it fits right. The side plate has the same indent for parts that they simply omitted. With that added for like 15 bucks you get a reel that handles pressure much better.

I'm Malaysian, we're surrounded by many oceans and Penn products are very hard to find in here. I have several reels by penn, I'm trying hard to find the boat rod and the distributor (purefishingmalaysia) is very lame. is the cast ability good on this reel? I've heard somewhere that this reel should mostly be used for bottom fishing, but i primarily troll or fish on a pier / in an estuary were you have to cast. i also love using live bait. will this reel handle this well?

Any level wind isn't gonna be great on casting distance , if you want distance you want to get a non level wind conventional reel

Silent Get a 6000 size real with a decent 7ft to 8ft pole. Snook are not that hard to catch. Use live bait .... hooked in the belly and just throw it there way. They will eat it. The Pier makes it easy. But you have to get there at sun up. They really don’t eat pass 8am.

Hey, Justin. Although the RIV15LW will certainly catch a 20 pound yellowtail, it is not the ideal choice. In general, 'non-levelwind' reels are recommended for yellowtail. The most popular reel in PENN's lineup would be the Fathom FTH25N, or if the budget is tight, the Warfare WAR20N.

Ya the Penn warfare is a good reel we use them for bottom fishing wrecks for snapper but if you were catching groupers or amberjack the fathom handles them way better with the heavier drag capacity

No, Rival is an entry level light inshore reel, we wouldn't recommend it for 100# catfish. Take a look at the Squall Level Winds instead, or at least a Warfare with a beefier anti-reverse than the Rival offers.

Hi Justin, in general, level wind reels are not a good choice for fishing tuna with live bait, the extra gears and weight of the levelwind mechanism of any LW reel can slow down the bait substantially. Depending on the line test/type you will be using, and the size of the tuna you will catch in your area, something from the Fathom series would be an excellent choice without breaking the budget. If you fish in Southern California for instance, The Fathom FTH25NLD2 or FTH30LD2 are the most popular, and can handle tuna from 20-100 pounds, along with yellowtail, dorado, etc. If you may go after tuna in that area over 100 pounds, the Fathom FTH40NLD2 is very popular.
