NEW FOREST WALK AT DEADMAN HILL (NEW FOREST NATIONAL PARK)

Interesting story about a boiling mound. Can’t say I’ve ever heard of such a thing. I like those bracket fungi. So many different types. I never knew the meaning of Purlieu, as in the Dibden one. After watching your video of Minstead, we took a trip firstly to Furzey Gardens and then found our way to the Trusty Servant pub for a good lunch. The weather was gorgeous and they were very busy, but thanks to their wonderful staff, we had a really good meal. Then we tried the walk from Pub Walks in the New Forest. All went well until we missed a turning and walked a further mile in the wrong direction. Having made our way back, we picked up the route and eventually found the church in Minstead. Couldn’t resist looking for Arthur Conan Doyle’s tombstone, which we found quite easily, thanks to your video. The pipe and magnifying glass was still there, but on the back was a little pink teddy bear, for which I couldn’t see a connection.

Glad you had a good walk there Lionel. Not sure about the pink teddy bear! Sometimes there is a small blue teddy bear with Portsmouth Football Club on it as I seem to remember that Conan Doyle might have had some sort of connection with the club - possibly played in goal for the Portsmouth Association club before the club became the present Pompey club.

Did this walk on Tuesday, beautiful weather but couldn't find the Bronze Age boiling mound either ! Saw lots of ponies and foals near that bit though. Very interesting about the WWII activity at Turf Hill as have been there before and didn't know about it. Saw the milk churn stand ! Lovely walk.
