New FREE Microfreak Patch Pack: "Nostalgia and Reminiscence"

Today I'm excited to share with you my brand new patch pack for the MicroFreak which is being released for free by the good folks at Arturia.
The pack is called "Nostalgia and Reminiscence" and my idea with this pack was not to try to recreate any classic sounds per se, rather to create patches of how they sound in my head, through rose-tinted glasses and years of sitting on old tapes, cassettes, and VHSs.
The patches in the pack tend towards the fuzzy, wobbly and lo-fi without trying to sound obviously retro. I've also put a big emphasis on taking advantage of the MicroFreak's special playing surface, with almost all of the patches reacting to your playing pressure - so don't be afraid to lean in on these sounds to feel how they shift under your fingertips.

Awesome - I just happened to give the MicroFreak a more accesible spot in my new setup and I am really looking forward to giving your patches a go! I love the CassyncBass patch, I was wondering how to make this kind of hollow bass sound for the last couple of days and will happily dissect your settings :) As I am on it: a big thank you for your amazing work on explaining synthesis and your creativity in finding new ways of sound design and modulation. I’m a sucker for longboi, but 80sCalled is also perfectly named! I don’t know why, but that one...ugh...called out to me. Harmonxstrings would crush with a modulated reverb with some predelay.

I always check this video for inspiration for the microfreak. Also I just noticed. Is that a Digitec Polara in the background? I love that weird little pedal.

It is the Polara, yes! It's one of my two default reverbs for hardware synths (the other being the GFI Specular).

I looked ar the Obscura but ended up going with the Flashback 2. I've made some really cool Toneprints specifically for synth stuff - it's a shame it's so hard to share them.

That's an early version of the "LongBoi" patch through some delay and reverb - looks like I had the Flashback 2 and Polara out on the desk so I'll assume it was those two!

The patches are amazing! Kudos! Microfreak is a very deep synth and even very expressive..i feel its greatest weakness and strength is its keyboard.. i just dont seem to get along playing on it.. may be im a terrible keys player.. but what is your experience?

Thank you! I love the keyboard, but I am a confirmed terrible keyboardist, so I don't think that's your problem! It's a bit of a divisive one I think. I love the direct expensiveness it brings to sustained notes, but I'll admit that for "velocity" rather than pressure it can be a bit of a weird one.

The keyboard has led to some great happy accidents as well as it's fair share of ruined takes. I'm sure if I took the time to master it it could be amazing but I will usually sparingly assign pressure parameters if any in my own patches (which is totally squandering this magnificent invention). This vid made me want to be better with them for sure.

I couldn't tell you off the top of my head as these were done about 3 years ago, but they are still available from Arturia's website and they're free, so if you want to deconstruct the sound that's probably the easiest route.

The video in the intro was recorded quite a bit before I completed the pack, so it's not impossible that I refined things in the matrix before I finalised the patch. So that might be "proto LongBoi" - but the biggest difference is all the reverb and delay.

I got in touch with a contact I have at Arturia and asked if they'd like the pack seeing as I was releasing it for free anyway. I had to work to their internal specifications but that was about it.

How would you compare this to the korg monologue?

They both have their own benefits. The Microfreak is certainly more sonically diverse thanks to the digital oscillator, and can play chords if course. The Monologue is more direct to use, has two oscillators (although some of the Microfreak's modes emulate a two oscillator set up) and has a better sequencer (the Microfreak's is about the same on paper, but in use the Monologue wins on usability).

Oh, and the Microfreak's "keyboard" is far less conventional, which may or may not be to your liking. I love it and find it immensely expressive... But other folks aren't so keen.

Hello, what steps must i take to get these patches onto the microfreak itself. I've played around with the synth quite a bit but have never connected it to a computer.

You need to install the Midi Control Centre (which comes with the drivers you need). Then you hook the Microfreak up and load the patch pack into MCC to get them onto your synth. If you've not hooked it up before, you'll also need to update the firmware on the Microfreak - but you'll get a prompt to do that and it's just pressing "yes" a few times.

hello I ask you a question, next week they give me the essential arturia keylab 61 that I bought on sale and I wanted to know if it is worth buying the microfreak (which was my original plan, buy only the microfreak) could the 2 be used together or would it be without Does it make sense to have 2 arturias almost similar? thanks

Well Keylab is a midi controller (that comes with virtual synths - doesn't make any sound for itself, only controls other things) whereas the Microfreak is a hardware synth... And the Microfreak has that playing surface... So I'd say there could be space in your life for both?
