The combination of the G-Shock aesthetic and durability with the convenience of GPS, HR, and Bluetooth may be appealing. This watch is not without its drawbacks.

Thanks for the review. I also upgraded to this from the H1000 and generally agree with your conclusions. It's a much more comfortable, lightweight, if slightly less premium feeling, watch that I appreciate for its simplicity compared to more traditional smartwatches; but it's let down by the immature app, even compared to the older G-SHOCK MOVE app. No ability to sync with Strava is a dealbreaker for me; but it was in MOVE, so I will give Casio the benefit of the doubt that such an important feature is coming.

Hey Mike, great video, you are one of the (if not) first to make an in-depth review of the watch. One question though; did you find an option for an analog watch face? I looked for it but could not find anything like that. The Garmin Instinct 2 has an analog watch face, but I did not really like the build of the Garmin.

Thanks for the review Mike. It was useful to see the application and a real-world test. In my mind, there are basically 3 types of watches: The computer/iPhone on the wrist with poor battery life but upgradable (Apple iWatch), the long batter life tool watch (Garmin Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar), and watches that last for ever have some extra sensors (this G-Shock). The odd-man out is the Garmin Instinct 2 Solar which is more of a tool watch but has an infinite battery.
@JoeyStanford
@JoeyStanford Жыл бұрын
The interesting part is if you compare the costs of these (and even the cost of ownership) because it makes the equation a bit harder and forces you to decide what it is you really are after in a watch. Battery life? Functions? Ruggedness and durability? Fashion?
@whenhen
@whenhen Жыл бұрын
I watched this review and I can't think of a single reason why someone would prefer this over a Garmin Instinct 2 Solar. It seems like the G-Shock and Instinct Solar compete in the same general class of smart watches, but by nearly every metric (app integration with Strava, heart rate accuracy, the app itself, workout options, etc), the Garmin is a far better choice while being nearly the same price or even less if you get it on sale.

I've got an instinct 2 solar, and had an instinct solar before. None of them are close to infinite battery, except on a very - very - specific use (lots of solar exposure with the smart sensors inactivated - which goes against the reason to buy one of those in the first place). Apart from the emotional purchase (G-shock nostalgia) I think the infinite battery life would be the main reason someone would go from instinct to g-move. But I really do not strongly believe this Casio has an infinite battery life on a "normal" sports watch usage. I guess only on a specific battery saving setting and lots of solar exposure, which again make no sense to me.
@whenhen
@whenhen Жыл бұрын
@@tisope You're right about the non infinite battery life. The stuff I found online about it states that it's 2 months with the heart rate and most other health tracking disabled. It can last a few weeks with all tracking enabled, minus GPS, in a low sunlight environment. That's about the same as a new Garmin Instinct Solar. So basically the battery life is about the same, with both being plenty sufficient for all but thru hikers, who would be carrying a battery bank anyways.

I have this watch in the yellow band variant and agree with everything you said. I'm a g shock fan so I'm keeping the watch. The build design and weight are perfect. I will say that I did a bike ride and while gps took like 4 minutes to be acquired, once done it did track my coordinates pretty accurately. Haven't tried running, swimming, or any of the others so can't say how those would function. I don't know about you but I did connect my watch to the app and the first thing it did was a software update. So it can receive updates thru Bluetooth on the phone app. Hopefully they keep up with the software updates and can improve the features and functionality of this watch.

I am almost completely sure that the next step for Samsung and Apple in their watches is some kind of solar sensor that allows the battery to be charged at least minimally, keeping it functional until you get home and plug it into the charger.

I dont think so. The Target audience is so different. The smartwatches from apple or samsung are not focused on that. They are targeted to a broader audience which is also into playing and communicating with others just with their watches. This here is for Sport geeks who like to analyse and track their hobby and expect their gear to be as tough and solar powered as they are xD

I have a Garmin Instinct Solar and it seems like a much better alternative than this if you're in the market for a solar powered rugged smartwatch. Much better GPS, more accurate heart rate, and a better app (not super great though). Plus it's basically indestructible for most uses. My dog has chewed on it, I've crashed into rock gardens when mountain biking, and the only thing that sustained any visible damage was the silicone straps. Also, while it doesn't look great, it is far less bulky than the G-Shock.

Good review. Let me start by saying I am a Casio fan. I so want Casio to make a good running watch. Unfortunately this is not it. I am starting to think they are just too far behind the likes of Garmin to catch up. I am not going back to hanging around waiting for my watch to latch onto a satellite. My Forerunner 255 often hooks onto one even before I have left the house. The absence of the ability to pair it with a chest strap is also a major drawback especially given the inaccuracy of the wrist monitor. Finally on a sport watch the app is half the experience of using it. There are no training plans or workout recommendations. For what it is it's very expensive compared to the competition. Come on Casio! If you can't do it well don't do it.

The biomass plastic in some ProTrek and G-Shock models are made of caster seed oil, corn starch and some other secret materials that binds it together in such a way to make it very durable and long lasting. This material have very similar properties to the traditional PolyUrethane used in the past so should be fine. It is worth noticing that the back of this watch have carbon fiber reinforced plastic so is even more durable, it have similar strength as stainless steel.

Instead others like Garmin are way infront of the app game. I bought the h1000 and i wanted to love it but it was so innacurate, slow, bulky and the app a shambles. Really thought they would have stepped it up by now. Not sure if i got the heart to try this one even though once again i do want to love it. I love the style.

Same here. I’m a fan of gshock but h1000 is a nightmare product for me. Bluetooth connection is terrible and it’s been out for almost 2 yrs and they still couldn’t fix the damn Bluetooth connection.

They don’t even give a proper update. iOS version is the worst. Always crashing. As the first page they use their ads and marketing stuff

I’ll wait for the 3000… the inaccuracy and huge size are really a nono for me.

Good review. But misses one important point - No idea for H1000, but the biggest problem with GBD-100 and GBD-200 connectivity is that you can't select which notifications from the phone to show - it will show either all of them, includes SMS, calls, insta, facebook, blah, bleh and bloh OR none of them if you turn it off (default). This review does not show how H2000 handles that. I personally own GBD-100. I was considering either GBD-200 or H1000, but after watching several H1000 reviews and after trying 200, despite my small wrist went for the 100, which is not that bulky in my opinion. I even often sleep with it. I don't regret buying it, as I noticed H1000 is very far from what I need. As for H2000 I don't think the optical HRM comes any closer to chest strap HRM. Before 2010 I was a runner and I had a Sigma Onyx Pro with a chest strap, so I have experience. Another thing is - I tried using my 100 for running, but the convenient functions are ruined by the weak speaker. So I can nicely program the interval timers, but can't hear them - what's the point. And when you run you can't feel the vibration either. The auto-lapping on 100 is not very good. Sometimes work good, sometimes not. In short - you can make a training plan on the app, you can track your run with the app, but who wants to carry a phone when you run? As a runner who ran most times on the street I don't listen to music either, as I was monitoring my surroundings and cars. But so far the 100 fits my basic needs - I wanted a rugged activity tracker. Sure my super-old FitBit still works, but nothing beats a G-Shock. Meanwhile I am waiting for a better version for the 100-200, as H2000 is still not what I need. Oh forgot - hey Mike, next time you make a video, be sure to really carefully clean the product display. Your H2000 screen is dirty on nearly all shots.

I have the 1000 and the heart rate monitor was useless even for walking, making it an awesome looking watch and nothing more. Very disappointed with Casio for releasing crap.
