New garden bed | Full sun 🌞 | Texas Gulf Coast Zone 9b

Spring is usually a time for new garden projects. This year we are putting in a new full sun garden bed! I love having a larger canvas for plants. Join me as I talk through the process we went through.

I would lay down a layer of cardboard on top of the first layer of bricks you could cover the whole bed with it to cover the grass and then put your mulch on top of the cardboard. But I'm a cardboard girl. Landscape fabric for us just ends up being a pain later on. That edging is a good idea for keeping the soil in. That being said, natures plans are not our plans lol. Whatever surprises pop up between the bricks, just tell people those are your imported English border cover. The best gardens to me aren't overly manicured and have a little wildness to them 😊😊

Cardboard is a great suggestion! We don't use landscape fabric because of all the issues with it later on like you mention. I laughed when I read "imported English border cover"! 😂 Priceless.

I am so sorry you broke your hand right in the business of spring, I hope it will heal soon! I came back here to edit my comment, I was wondering about your trellises but just saw your previous video and see your review of them there! Thank you for the tips on securing them 😁👍

Thank you for your healing wishes! I'm glad you found the trellis info helpful. We originally used heavy duty metal garden fence rods to secure the trellis, but they bent when we had a tropical storm come through with winds. So we went to the cattle fence pole. It is officially called a "Steel Fence T-Post with Anchor Plate".

Thank you for your healing wishes! 😊 Yes, we do get migratory birds - about mid-April to mid-May is the most active time here in spring for birds other than hummingbirds.

How do you prevent the grass from coming up later through the bed? That’s the issue I’m having when I start a flower bed

We have St. Augustine grass and it doesn't grow from being smothered. But, if you put down cardboard that should help smother the grass. Then put the soil, compost, etc. on top of the cardboard.

Where did you buy the liatris?

I bought it at Enchanted Gardens. I have only seen "Kobold" there which is a native. I have found that if I go to Enchanted Gardens once a month (or every three weeks) starting in February I have pretty good luck getting the plants I am looking for. Some things do sell out pretty quickly. You can always put your name on a list for a particular plant and they will text you when it comes in. I have done that too. Most plant nurseries down here have their best selections in the spring up to Mother's Day.
