New Gift Card Scam Alert!

Gift card scams are on the rise and I happen to run across one. Luckily, no one swindled any money out of me and it got caught before it was too late. Watch to find out some tips to keep your money safe when buying gift cards at the store.

That five dollar fee for buying the card is paying your credit card cash back

Sure. But the cash back is an order of magnitude bigger than the fee.

@@BeatTheBush it's a zero sum game. So yeah, taking advantage of bigger cash back is winning versus people not getting cash back at all. But it ends up being anti-consumer overall since it's just shuffling fees between people

Actually untrained cashiers would not have catch the lack of activate receipt; same with customers who aren’t accustomed to buying gift cards. Another tip is that once fraud is detected, if you’re in store, you should resolve with store manager right away. Don’t try to go home and call the headquarter. You’ll get the runaround. The manager has a lot of discretion in terms of either refunding you or activating another card for you. If discovering the fraud at home but the balance is still intact, quickly load it to amazon or some other commonly used store like Walmart or Target. Sure you can contest the fraud down the line, but it’s a lot of wasted hours on the phone and on your email.

think about it, the reason why the teller was trained on the scam is because people have gotten it to work several times and is only now being stopped. I work in a pharmacy and scammers have been using pharmacies to launder money off these cards in the most obscure way. 1. they get some "hot cash" like the stolen gift card u describe 2. they find a small pharmacy and call asking to buy a bunch of random stuff, usually OTC test strips, this week it was 20+ bottles of centrum silver vitamins lol (350$), 3. they ask to cancel the transaction but for some reason it cannot be returned to the gift card and they ask u to move it to a clean debit card its usually people in other countries because they will use the text to talk service for the blind that our country provides for free and it is used to basically have a person call in for you to access stuff like healthcare. I think this is because they have very thick non native speaker accents which is a clue about a potential scam

Thanks for sharing the pharmacy launder thing. I suppose they should limit the number of the same items you can buy to make it difficult to launder money quickly. I have had money returned to the same gift card I used before but also have had it returned on a different card since I destroyed the old gift card thinking I don't need to use it anymore.

It should be chase flex freedom . First year 4% and Q1 another 4 percent and 1% basic . With chase sapphire 1.5 times more than 10 percent cash value back

Thank you for the video, they don’t buy the gift card they just altered the bar code, You can take the empty gif card for free and then go to the store to placed back and wait This also could be an inside job

I don't think you can take an empty gift card. But they could buy one, use it, and inject their own bar code. They really have to seal those gift cards better.

Visa vanilla? There are two barcodes, one on the card and one on the outside packaging. They need to match and the cashier needs to scan both to activate. Sometimes they are lazy and just scan the inside card twice so the scam works if the cashier is lazy.

I have a question I called customer service to report the situation and they start by asking my name the day I was born and my phone number also they want my address of my house are you kidding this is not real bank all I want is my money that a unknown scammer stole is it safe to give all that information to the Vanilla Gift card representative? It's a grandfathered card so go for a groceries card you have that typically gives 5% these days. Mine is a Sears Mastercard you can no longer get.

I love having the Sears card and do the same as Francis. I load up on GCs for 10% off each month. I also use my Cash App for 10% off weekly grocery GC purchases (up to $75).

You can find out when and where it was used and subpoena video records get license plates or even addresses where something was delivered

The cashier these days tend to make a big fuss checking for me so I'm ok with that. Or just open it after right next to the check out area to make sure not tampering was done.

First of all there is a big difference between a "gift card" and a Pre-paid Visa/Mastercard card that charges the $5.95 fee. I personally began using "Green Dot" Visa pre-paid card by accident when I first bought a Green Dot Prepaid Visa card with $50 on it. (Which reloading it is completely free instead of continually paying $5.95 for a card you can't use online, any store, or everywhere like a prepaid Visa/Mastercard) Then let's say you or whoever you bought it for wanted to purchase something online from like Amazon or Ebay etc. So before you use it online you have to register your card on their website so the card will have a billing address and a shipping address. So they gave me a completely new digital visa card to use for that day, but then the next day in the mail they sent me a new physical Visa card with my name on the front and everything. So then I downloaded the green dot app and it's basically your own free credit card, debit card, and checking account. It shows you exactly how much you have on your cards balance...you can get your paycheck deposited into this personalized prepaid Visa card since it gives you all the features of a bank account. Like a transit number etc that you give to your employers to get your paycheck directly deposited, and they even promise you will receive your paycheck 3 days earlier than normal. Anyways, long story short I began using this card for online shopping and streaming services since there is no way to get an overdraft fee since it won't let the transaction go through if you don't have enough funds on the card. They even have a "pause all transactions" button on the app in case you lost it and you know where you left it at.....you can hop on your phone and immediately disable the card so It useless to whoever finds it...and then once you find it you just hop back on the app and press the toggle button for "pause all transactions". Long story short, once they mail you your personalized card the very next day, you then have access to transfer money for free to friends and family (great for if you have a teen child that you are teaching them the importance of money and you can immediately transfer funds either directly on the app or just walking up to just about any cvs/Walmart /Walgreens /dollar general etc and empty out a change jar or give the cashier cash and then they just scan the barcode that the Green dot app provides for a cashier so you can immediately put funds in your child's prepaid Visa card/bank account. Without ever having to deal with all the fees and inconveniences of most banks and debit cards. Because we all know how annoying it is to have to get a new debit card (especially if your card was used fraudulently by someone across the country....but with a Green Dot Visa card you don't have to worry about getting fees and trying to get fraudulently charges removed since they can't happen to begin with) in the mail with a new number....and then change all the online services you use that card for to the new card number. I didn't mean for this comment to be this long but it's definitely a very convenient thing to have/use even if you already have your regular bank account and debit card. As you can use it for your Apple pay or Google pay account on your phone and never even have to carry the physical card on you...except for withdrawing cash from an ATM and places that only require swiping cards as credit or debit.
