Look like a good "First Turn" to me...This is what I started on 12 years ago, and I can and have made money, but it is just great to walk up and give someone a gift you made with your own hands...be willing to innovate, try stuff you see or think about, and DO NOT show a piece if your not happy with it. (I've warmed my shop a lot of winter months with pieces I was not happy with.) and it's great for getting away from stress!

I've got the same model so I'll give you a few tips. First, it's not just a clone of the Jet brand lathe, it's made in the same factory and differs only in the quality of the finish and the motor. Anything that fits on a Jet lathe will fit on this lathe. Second, if your good with hand filing, file off the paint on the toolrest and true the top. If you're not comfortable using a hand file, use a grinder with a flap wheel, I would suggest a type 27 80 or 100 grit. Third, the motor is low powered and the air intake sucks in dust like it was meant to be a vacuum. The motor will burn out quick if you stall it, so pre round bowl blanks and take it slow. Better yet, get a Jet motor or if you've got the tools and talent, make your own variable speed motor out of a treadmill. There are plenty of guides for doing it, just remember that caution is the name of the game when it comes to tinkering with heavy equipment. Fourth, try to replace the various lockdown handles with metal ones, the plastic ones will strip out in no time. It's not something you have to do right away, but it's only a matter of time before you have to. And finally, build a big heavy bench and mount the lathe to it, the metal legs aren't as sturdy as they seem. If you get it on a solid bench you'll do wonders for it, but you can make do with it bolted to the ground. Here's the chuck I use; www.amazon.com/48111-1-Inch-Direct-Precision-Turning/dp/B0064JJ4NK/ref=asc_df_B0064JJ4NK/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309811990469&hvpos=1o3&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4497407720598961608&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9008422&hvtargid=pla-450811469511&psc=1

Thanks for the suggestions. I have indeed stripped all the lockdown handles and just ended up putting different bolts in it so I could tighten with a wrench since it was easier for me than replacing the handles. I’m hopefully upgrading very soon to a laguna. I’ve become somewhat addicted and I’m needing something I can be a bit more productive on. Thanks again, and keep in touch.

@@GooseRustic an excellent choice on your part, it's expensive but I think they're worth every penny when you factor in the quality assurance and customer support. I'll give you one more tip for this lathe, it's got just enough strength to mill brass. If you can get a cross slide that's tall enough you can save a lot on small soft metal parts. You have to go real slow and anything stronger than brass is an exercise in futility, but it's a cheap way to get a metal lathe. Here's an example of a correctly sized cross slide; www.ebay.com/itm/LOGAN-POWERMATIC-12-LATHE-PRODUCTION-CROSS-SLIDE-AND-TOOL-POSTS/302773327563?hash=item467eb256cb:g:KqAAAOSwg7hbJGr8 It would need to have a few things done to get it to attach to the lathe, but if you've got a tap and die set you could whip something up quick. Just be warned, a milling machine is a whole other level of obsession... Edit: I'm not exactly an expert, but if you have any other questions I know some old fogeys I can ask.

I really appreciate the suggestions. Metal working is also something I’m very interested in, but I have to contain myself for now or the wife will have me sleeping in the shop. Sounds like it would be a cheap way to get into the hobby though. I’ll have to keep it in mind. Thanks again.

Enjoyed the video. Looking at getting this lathe and the mini 8 X 12 inch lathe. The mini is $79 right now. You actually look relaxed in the video. Pure Leaf tea @ 7:02 I love tea. When I make a pitcher of tea, I like use two tea bags and 1 green tea bag. Put in the hot water and then the sugar, mix to dissolve the sugar, and then dip your bags. It helps prevent the tea from turning out bitter 99% of the time, if you accidentally over steep them. Family sized tea bags, not cup size.

Things you are going to need. Nova jaw chuck gen 3, about $150-$200. Sharpening system for your chisels(wolverine system) $200 and a 6 or 8 inch bench grinder, $?. Last but definitely not least, wood. Once you get hooked you're hooked. Have fun. By the way good lathe, I still have mine, still works great.

Has anyone been able to do indexing with this lathe? At the back of the motor, rear end of the headstock. there is a female threaded hole, near the retention ring. It appears that indexing can be implemented using this female threaded hole (with a bolt that fits this size and pitch of thread and a graduated disk), but I have yet to find out what thread it is.

I have the Nova chuck that uses two rods to tighten and loosen it. So my suggestion is to go with the Nova chuck that uses the T wrench. I would not have a problem with the one I have if the HF lathe had a spindle lock or indexing on it. Penn State Industries has good chucks too. Grizzly has them too. Depends on the quality and price you want to pay. I would not go cheap on this item tho. I have three wood lathes and one is the same one you have.

You'll need a 1 inch 8tpi adapter for the nova. I got the super nova2. I wish I had got a lathe chuck that has quick change jaws. Other than that the nova is awesome I've turned some large bowls with it. Be careful with the tool rest I had a catch while out at the left end of the tool rest and snapped the rest off just at the top of the machine round piece. Harborfreight was great in getting me a replacement.

Found out how brittle the tool rest was also, dropped it off and shelf and snapped it. Also had a catch and just about broke the face plate in half. Great lathe for the money but quickly outgrown. I recently upgraded to a laguna. I should prolly get rid of the video as it’s no longer relevant.

I too, broke my tool rest. Tried jb weld . Lasted 15 minutes. I drilled a hole through the rest and the bottom. Still together. I found out a large unbalanced piece of wood can warp the main spindle, bounce off the ceiling and hit you in the back. Really missing late evening turning anything.

so far I think it is an ok lathe. It gets the job done and for the price you can't go wrong. however it is a bit underpowered, I tend to stall it out especially when you get near the 12" width. Also all of the accessories that came with it, the faceplate and the tool rest ect. are crappy cast and very weak. The face plate broke when on the first catch that I had while using. but like I said for the money it'll get you turning and get you some practice.

If you have used it a while you might check to see if the belt is bad. When it is turned off take hold of the head and shake it to see if you can see if it is loose. I saw another video where someone said that when he got his lathe the points where the wood goes weren't lined up. That would cause it to shake.

Make Star Wars Great Again : In my research of these lathes, and others similar to it is that the headstock and tailstock coming loose is a common problem. I'm sure it comes with cheap Chinese hardware and this is a source of the problem. I would suggest, as the previous comment notes, taking both parts loose and clean the rails and mounting locations well. Replace the hardware w/ grade 8 hardware and use a nyloc nut w/ a flat washer. I guess you could also put a lock washer under the nut, but that's generally not what is recommended. Just tighten as much as you can w/o breaking the fastener.
