Program Notes/Performance Notes:
“The Final Boss” is inspired by Souls-like game called “Elden Ring” by the company FromSoftware. A Soulslike (also spelled Souls-like) is a subgenre of action role-playing and action-adventure games known for high levels of difficulty and emphasis on environmental storytelling, typically in a dark fantasy setting. In the beginning of 2022, I discovered a popular trend of video game streaming by people who play video games professionally. Not knowing a lot about video games, I was curious about why just watching someone play video games was attracting such a huge audience of online spectators. I soon realized that the most popular video game streamers on the internet were people who practiced and analyzed video games with a level detail that is comparable to what my euphonium practice regimen has been for over two decades. As a professional in a very niche career field, I appreciated and related to people doing video games as a profession.
I saw an increasing number of video game stream recommendations being recommended to me by on KZbin, and soon after I discovered that two of the most popular video games of 2022, “Sekiro” and “Elden Ring,” were both famous for their high level of quality and detail and infamous for the level of complexity and difficulty that caused many casual video game players to give up after only a short time playing.
Soon after, I decided to try these games out myself just to comprehend how truly complex they were. in terms of managing the intricacies of the controller, the battle mechanics, timing, and clues for storyline progression, I soon learned the widespread perception was appropriate; and within few hours I found myself unable to progress any further and was forced to seek help in the form of online walkthrough tutorials-just to understand the games a little better.
As I was searching for information, I found out that most of the top tier video game players would practice many hours on daily basis to, in a sense, make the video game play look as smooth and easy as possible while livestreaming. And this took me back to my teenage years, when I was learning techniques such as double- and triple-tonguing from Arban “Complete Conservatory Method for Cornet,” complex fingering patterns and slurs from Clarke “Technical Studies,” and how much time and frustration was involved into practicing them to make it sound effortless. I was also reminded of how rewarding it was when I achieved relative mastery of a technique.
And so, inspired by the month-long journeys necessary for people to complete the game “Elden Ring,” I decided to write an extremely technically complex solo for euphonium to mimic the learning curve required to beat one of the most difficult challenges in the game-“The Final Boss.”
This would be a solo that required many hours of practice, and just like in the game itself, would necessitate deviation from the piece (the “main storyline”) to practice specific techniques needed to progress further in the music.
“The Final Boss” involves some of the fastest passages, trickiest intervals and most complex range in the euphonium repertoire while maintaining minimalist harmonic patterns and somewhat predictable rhythmical elements-perhaps similar to what you would see from exercises in method books.

@@Matonizzi had a great time playing this solo on trumpet! I appreciate you also putting the treble clef version of the song below. Even tho it is my first year of playing the trumpet, I feel like the high D/F was pretty easy at the end. And I obviously did not play the fast parts bc i am still a beginner 😂😂

I was practicing Vendetta Variations and listened back to compare to you and realized that I didn't sound as full as you yet my tone was clear and open. I asked my band director, as I'm in highschool, but his only response was to be more relaxed and that trick didn't give me the results. Any tips?
