The only good thing about self checkout is I accidentally forget to scan all my items and sometimes if I’ve got a watermelon I’ll accidentally weigh it as potatoes 🤷‍♂️ I don’t know why people are complaining about groceries being expensive because I’m getting a bargain. These self checkouts are life savers and there’s no amount of silly tool to stop people from getting a bargain because no staff member is going to check the bottom of the bags or get me to empty it all out so they just let me go 😂 they want to be cheap and dirty so will I.

People need to stop shopping at these big companies that do not protect their customers privacy. The real reason they are implementing these "security" measures is that they make a lot of money from the data they gather on customers shopping habits, it has nothing to do with shoplifting lol. These gates are just a guise to make shoppers think they're being tracked for shop lifting prevention.

Why is it so hard to track people with that software, but remove the gates? If someone has been caught stealing, Coles or Woolworths should be able to hand that footage to the Police and they should take care of it. I’m gonna stop shopping at them if these gates come to my stores as there are countless potential problems… I could get stuck behind someone who is trying steal and is now going on a rampage because he’s been locked in, I could get falsely accused like I’ve had done countless times now with just the “unexpected item in bagging area”, and so on… Overall it’s going to falsely accuse quite a few people and it’s going to slow down the traffic getting through there which is surprising considering Coles and Woolworths want to rely on Self Check Outs but now are going to make them even slower, great job! 😂

One would presume they're connected to the fire system and would open in an emergency, most people aren't going to stand behind that thing if a fire broke out, generally a staff membet a few meters away, or if a fire started go back through the open entrance and exit the store via a normal checkout, nobody is going to stand at the closed gate while the store burns around them, common sense would kick in.

No thanks, bring back paid cashiers, the losses increased after self service took over. Self service should've just been an express lane for 12 items or less. Cost of living crisis, stems from companies making people redundant by moving to digital and AI integration. Less jobs around = less money being earned = less money being spent = less profits being made = rising prices to cover losses = less items being paid for = increase in loss prevention costs = increase in prices to cover losses = less items being paid for = increase in loss prevention...... repeat as necessary. Didnt coles make like a billion dollars profit? Instead of these upgrades why not hire coles security. Like jbhifi. Higher crime areas, higher pay more staff. Im sure there are people out there who would like to get involved. You cant expect the cops to be chasing all these shop lifters, they have better things to do. 2 days ago, I seen an Aboriginal couple (no im not rasist) walk out with a hand full of items. Food stuffed in their pram. The girl at he selfserve, ( tiny in comparison) could only follow them saying "excuse me". They ignored her and left with what im guessing was over $200-$300 in meat and ice coffees. It made me so mad, i wanted to chase them but another staff member said its a common thing and that safety is more important. I highly doubt that little girl would want to be stuck behind closed doors, people can be unpredictable and agressive when cornered. Good thing i always print my receipt as proof of purchase, cause if those doors do not open. I will cause a scene. I dont think staff are ready for the wrath of us honest shoppers.

That’s a disheartening story. My mother told me of similar incidents she went through. Unless police 👮‍♂️ or security is waiting on the other side not much they can do. I’m sick of the minority driving up prices to cover for these thieves. I know detaining a thief is unsafe. But ultimately if they know there is a security gate (and they will case a store before attempting theft) they know it’s an obstacle and will move to another (easier target) store. It’s more about a deterrent than locking someone in. A thief heads to a store with access in mind.

coles worker here, idk about other stores but for us, we’re told to just let angry customers out the gate instead of escalating. we also aren’t to purposely shut gates on anyone and we can just open the gates with a remote. the actual door housing is on a swivel which although is alarmed, acts as an emergency “panic release” thought id pitch in

I searched the gate system they are using on Google. It is specifically itab sesame gates. You can find it on KZbin. With the camera 🎥 vision in the checkout area the ai will detect the companions and will open even when they leave minutes after the other companion. Plus manual opening in case of emergency.

This is doing nothing but slowing and making legitimate customers from doing shopping and making us angry, everything from asking for receipts for something we already paid for and own. I’ve seen at coles plenty of times people stealing 20-30 pieces of makeup and other things like food, told security and staff they don’t care neither do the police. These thieves are in and out constantly, some take what they can sell like makeup to the local shops others just take so they can eat for the night. Get rid of all the automatic machines and get the staff check our items. Slow is good and safe and on one gets treated like a thief

Its not uncommon for me to go into Coles to look for something I can’t find, and exit without buying (nor stealing, mind you) anything. Am I expected to buy something just to get the gate to open? Having said that, I found a workaround if it doesn’t open: vertically insert your mobile phone into the crack and twist 90 degrees.

It's true that this new way is not greatly comfortable choice. However, I would be upset if I should pay more because the supermarket needs to compensate for their stolen assest. Some people may say, "Why should I?" Then i would answer " it's because they are a business, not a charity." While i was looking at the violent customer damaging the door, i thought "thank God. That's just a door. What could happen if it were a staff". Anyway, maybe the supermarket needs to provide options - being scanned or share the loss with a free pass

Another meassure to stop shop lifting is coming soon, when all are told they must receive a mark in order to buy and sell, once they take the mark, whatever item they pic up from the shelf, will be added to their cart, the item will be automatically deducted from their bank account, but if an item is put back, because the person decides they don't need it, the item will not be charged to their account.

I was an embarrassing situation at Coles in Leichardt (Sydney) the other day. I didn’t buy anything and the gate wouldn’t open for me. I had to wait for someone else and sneak behind them. I felt like a crook. Of course there was no staff present to help either. I’m not sure if these are a good thing or not. I mean if it helps stop theft maybe, but do you really want some druggie who is trying to nic something stuck in the store? Sometimes better to just let them go and call police to sort it out.

up the prices and then stalk you in the supermarket via AI.i stopped shopping at coles and woolworths 1yr ago and went to aldi from now on and it's cheaper to the rest.everyone should just shop at aldi and boycott coles and woolworths and that would send a great message to the two big supermarket chains.

I think people are making a big deal out of this, the reason this was done was due to shoplifting becoming worse over the past 12 Months, The Smart gates not only help Cole's but customers as well, as when people steal the prices of items on the shelve can get higher cause of it. let me put it simply, you are a customer you have the right to choose if you want to shop at Coles or not, Coles owns its stores, and therefore has the right to choose what they do with its stores, if its that big of and issues shop somewhere else.

Could have prevented all of this if they had just stuck with manned check outs. Coles and Woolworths being greedy trying to make profits by axing the need for jobs and replacing people with machines. I’m sick and tired of these machines always ringing up an error and I constantly have to wait for staff to come and swipe their cards to get it back up and running. Plus it’s good to have staff who can pack your bag for you because there are elderly and handicapped people who need help. If that’s how the supermarkets want to play then I’m going to accidentally forget to scan a few things and I’m going to accidentally select the wrong vegetable as I weigh certain items. That’s the only thing good about the self checkout is how much I get away with 😅 You want to play dirty well so can I.
