The original Hindenburg footage has been denoised, upscaled, colorized and frame interpolated to 60fps using artificial intelligence. Using a newer colorizer here, let me know what you think. Still trying to work out all of the reds.

When you consider what the Hindenburg was made from, it's amazing it lasted as long as it did. People often focus on the folly of using hydrogen as the lifting gas, when in fact the Germans had no other choice. At the time, the only nation with a reserve of helium was the United States, which wasn't keen on providing any of it to the Nazi government. But the lesser-known fact is that the coating used to treat the fabric was an extremely flammable nitrocellulose dope. This wasn't unique to the Hindenburg or to airships. This was standard technology in airplanes as well, wherever a fabric covering was used to create a very lightweight structure and needed to be protected from the elements. This is one reason why aircraft of the teens and twenties were such death traps. Nitrocellulose burns furiously once ignited and is extremely hard to extinguish. They didn't have plastics or non-porous fabrics to work with. Less flammable butyrate dopes had not yet been invented. Cotton and nitrocellulose dope were the best materials they had. All aircraft build up static charges as they fly through the air because of the friction of the air moving over the skin. A flying machine as large as the Hindenburg is going to carry a tremendous static charge with it, which will be discharged at the first opportunity as soon as it finds a path to ground. Hindenberg's designers knew this and designed electrical resistance in to the mooring points where the lines attached. This was mostly intended as a safety measure for the ground crew so they wouldn't receive a huge electrical shock upon grabbing the mooring line at the end of a flight, but it also would have been critical for fire prevention. It seems likely that some part of this system failed and either got very hot or caught fire, igniting the nitrocellulose doped fabric. It would have had to burn through the outer skin and the gas bags in order to release the hydrogen. Once this happened the hydrogen burned rapidly and it was all over in mere seconds.

a bomb is the more likely culprit.
@singleproppilot
@singleproppilot Жыл бұрын
@@stargazerspark4499 My point is that the Hindenburg already WAS a bomb. All it needed was something to set it off. Static electricity was a potent source of ignition and there was plenty of it around a giant airship trying to land during an incoming storm.

It makes me wonder if they had some protection from lightning strikes, or if a simple storm could have inevitably caused the same thing to occur.
@Bert4826
@Bert4826 2 жыл бұрын
While flying they weren't ground, so no worries while in the sky. But once grounded, it was a real fear. That had strict procedures about landing during storms. They did not follow them during the last Hindenburg flight, and landed in electrically charged weather. Once lines were dropped they were grounded, the leaking gas bag was ignited.
@KarstenJohansson
@KarstenJohansson 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bert4826 That's a good response. I was in a jet en route to Miami that got hit by lightning. It knocked out an engine, and we emergency landed in Ft. Meyer. But other than the sound and abrupt turbulence, and scary-ass impromptu demonstration about water procedures, nobody got electrically shocked.
@KarstenJohansson
@KarstenJohansson 2 жыл бұрын
The attendant literally said "Ladies and gentlemen. We are currently flying Northbound over the Gulf of Mexico. It's a good time to review our water landing procedures." We were originally southbound over the ocean, so the unannounced change of direction and destination was already "shocking" but we landed in For Meyer, surrounded by firetrucks before we were allowed to disembark. Scary as hell, but matches what you said since none of us got electrocuted and there was no explosions or fires or anything. Just a zapped engine.
@KarstenJohansson
@KarstenJohansson 2 жыл бұрын
Also was the first and only time a flight I've been on told us to close the window blinds before we landed. They shut the lights off and only the floor lights were on for the hour or so that passed before we landed and were allowed to exit. I still took a lot of flights after. This was totally frightening, but the reality is, it's the *only* scary thing that ever happened in all those flights. I've had more fright moments on the highway... all good.
@singleproppilot
@singleproppilot Жыл бұрын
@@KarstenJohansson There are good reasons for those instructions. They wanted the window shades closed in case the firefighters blasted the windows with foam. I have personally seen a firetruck force water in through the windows; closing the shades would prevent the passengers from getting wet. They shut down the power to keep from contaminating the auxiliary power unit with firefighting foam. But, they should have just popped the slides and let everyone off, either that or towed the airplane in to the gate. No reason to make everyone sit in the dark for hours.

Yeah I'd suggest the AI could do with a little more coaching. The text panels would look much better if they were stabilised and also the colours are a bit schizophrenic. The speed was really good though. I'd love it if this could also be trained to correct for the "specks that tend to appear on some frames. That would be a bit step forward too.
