I am glad you are feeling better and back reviewing. The Eastern Front is a very good informative read as, as you say neglected in most part because of the Western Front. As with the Western Front an amazing disregard for casualties, the incompetence of generals, etc. Judgement at Tokyo was a real eye opener for me, the squabbling between the judges, who many had a different definition of War Crimes. MacArthur who wanted the who trial over as quickly as possible. Another bone of contention was whether the Emperor should have been held accountable, etc.
@TheHistoryShelfАй бұрын
Indeed! I agree on your major points. The role of the Japanese Emperor and his portion of the blame is something that does not get enough attention.

"Even the Angels in Heaven do not know when the world will end," my late Mom was fond of that quote when people started talking about the "end," like during the Cuban missile crisis and at the turn of the century, it comforts me. This world will end individually for everyone, at seventy-five, I'm not wasting time wringing my hands, spent the beginning of week in hospital and glad to be out. Agree about not minding horror, except satanic ones, those are creepy.😂

Yes, indeed, I also quote Matthew 24:36 when I see people "predicting" the end of the world. Only the Father knows, not even Jesus, so I just roll with it and look up to Heaven, baby!

Congratulations on the 5 year anniversary, Peggy!! I think I was there from the start. LOL! 5 yrs gone by so quickly. Thanks for all the book recs during that time. I have Judgment at Tokyo and The Eastern Front - haven't read either yet. I have read The Western Front, however - which is incredible - so I won't be doing the readalong. She lives! So glad things are improving on that front. And that has to be one of the best/worst shirts I've seen in a while. 😂 I bought both Nick Lloyd books very recently. Shoot, I think "Eastern" just came out. I'd be interested in a New Year read along with the caveat that I'm a WWI dullard. I'm in the process of correcting that (think creepy British "correcting" like Grady from The Shining here), but I doubt I'll have expert insight to offer within a few months. 😊 I also have Judgment at Tokyo and Soviet Judgment at Nuremburg. Day in September and Quiet Company of Dangerous Men sound great. And cool that you're taking on some natural history. I once had a shark jaw sitting on my desk. I used it as a pencil and pen holder. If I'm ever stuck at sea, I suppose I'll have to accept brutal Chondrichthyte retribution as justice served. Oh, and no movies with Satanic elements? Call me weird, but the mere thought of Clara from The Andy Griffith Show hailing Satan at the end of Rosemary's Baby still sends me into paroxysms of obnoxious guffawing.
@TheHistoryShelfАй бұрын
Bryan, your missives are so enjoyable to read. Actually, I have seen a fair amount of movies with satanic stuff in it...it's just not my cup of tea. I make an exception for Longlegs because the acting was phenomenal and creeped me out more than any other movie of late. Yes! Grady's rolling "Rs" in "I corrrrrected them, sir" is still chilling every time I watch it. I'm hopeful Bill might want to do another WWI book read along in January or February, so stay tuned (haha, I know you will.)

Lindsay...I went from that video to watching a new movie on Prime Video called "Shark Bait"....what's wrong with me? It's a morbid fascination, for sure. To me, it's the ultimate terror...to be bobbing up and down in a vast ocean, waiting for a monster to pull you under. BLahhhhh!!!

Can I ask a question? How do you read about the bad things in history without becoming depressed? I have an American history project reading from the colonial period to the present. I'm still in the colonial period. I read about King Philip's War and other associated bad stuff going on in that period. It put me into a depression and a reading slump. I'd like to learn to read emotionally heavy topics without being quite so affected. Thanks.
@TheHistoryShelfАй бұрын
That is a thoughtful and important question...thank you for asking. The darker moments and eras in history do make for some bleak reading, I agree. My way of dealing with it is keeping a sense of proportion. I will not read two or three depressing books in a row, for example. But I also have a relative distance from the events (as we all do) that makes a natural emotional buffer. Some people may not have that sense of distance or have a more finely tuned sensitivity to depressing events from the past. Finding a balance between the uplifting and its opposite is essential. I hope that helps!
@TimeTravelReadsАй бұрын
@@TheHistoryShelf Thank you. I think this spring I read too many depressing books in a row. Thank you for pointing out that it's better not to do that.
