I don't blame you for starting over; sometimes we all need to start a project over from time to time. For me, while working on the plans to my big train layout my current switching layout will be a part of, I often design a layout I'm satisfied with at first, but then I develop second thoughts and start over, again.

WHAT..again. Setting records on restarts dude! lol. Oh well as long as you are having fun. Some general tips regarding the power cut out issues. 1) Ensure all wire connections are solid, secure and/or well soldered. Over time wires may come loose. 1a. Ensure the wire and track are as clean as possible when making the connection, even factory new rail should be cleaned before soldering (i use Isopropyl Alcohol) and running trains. 1b. Solder flux will help the solder flow. 2) Power the Turnout Frog (as you did) is a great help 3) Ensure the track and locomotive wheels are clean. (again i use Isopropyl Alcohol) 4) as mentioned below - Keep-Alives are a great help. There is a cost to buying all new stuff as there is a cost to reusing old stuff. Most of my bench-work is reused from my 1st, 2nd, and Third layouts. While i saved on $$$ (especially during the pandemic price hikes), I spent a lot of time and energy getting the reused items adjusted to work on the new configuration. Looking forward to progress and first completion of a layout! 😂

Great job on that benchwork! It looks so clean. I think it’s good that you’re allowing yourself to make these changes and taking your time with it. It’s worth being methodical to end up with something that is functional that you’re happy with! Just be sure to allow yourself to enjoy it and get to running some trains! I’m in the same boat, in fact, my dad and I used many of the exact same techniques and ideas for our benchwork, tho we had to use bigger wood and screws for the table tops to avoid warping in our basement due to temp/humidity. Glad to see construction foreman Binx is overseeing the job too ❤️

Great video Trey of your new layout. I totally understand that you changed your mind of what you previously had. I changed my layout design twice. Its definitely not an easy process for sure. I think it looks great and as long as you're happy with it so are we. The black trim on the legs and frame look great. I did the same with mine and like it much better than that wood look. The buildings and rolling stock are great choices. Thanks again Trey for sharing your videos with us along with your PRICELESS time and effort my friend! Cheers from Laurel, Delaware USA.

There's 2 pet peeves iv always had when building a layout..the 2 things that will absolutely take the fun out of a model railroad are, cars that constantly come uncoupled, making sure the coupler height is the correct height is essential, not close, not almost, couplers (kadee) all have to line up perfectly with the KD coupler test tool..if they don't they don't go on the layout until they do line up...#2 absolutely flawless track work, trains that constantly derail are no fun.. testing track and curves with your most sensitive longest car is important, same with a locomotive, steam engines usually are the most sensitive..so always make a layout both steam and Diesel friendly..iv had to start over more than a few times to get it right.. but I've always been happy that I did..

Every layout you make, you learn from. Each one gets better as do your skills, like soldering and such. I had what I called a practice layout and I learned a lot of what not do do lol. Now on to my second one which is built entirely different than the first one. Not to mention something like 10 designs before settling on something I would be satisfied with. After all, you gotta enjoy it for a while!

Thank you for sharing these videos. My layout is similar to yours, only just a little smaller. My benchwork is complete and I am using foam boards also. Thank you for the advice on the black paint, I was considering this, yours looks so good that I purchased some and will do the same. My question to you - I also plan to install a bridge on my layout. With only 1-inch foam, how do you foresee enough clearance under the bridge? It is for the reason that I am considering stacking 2 1-inch foam sheets for the scenery base. Thoughts?
@TopRailroad
@TopRailroad 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! And regarding the bridge, clearance wise it’s going to be very low with just 1 inch foam. I only plan to have some water flowing under neath so I’m hoping it’s fine. If you want cars or people to walk under then 2 inches or more would be better

First off, proud of you for willing to try and try again.. But this is your 5th time. I think you need to learn more before you get your hands going. Plan better and think through more. After 4 times now, you are just wasting money. You don't seem to be reusing any old track/switches, and this boggles my mind. Why not? You are spending $$$$ on just new track & turnouts alone. All of that old stuff could easily been ripped up, cleaned up and reused. You are keeping Walthers in business... let's just say that. You could of added more feeders, and keep alives to get around your old dodgy track work. Painting before the wire was not your flaw, its poor electrical knowledge. Again not trying be negative, as I do enjoy watching your progress. I value your attempts and wanting to keep going. I just think you need to plan more and have a more drawn out plan. If you re-do this again for a 6th time.. I think you should join a club or local group and do it with someone more experienced. As you are just burning $$$$ away. Looking forward to more. I just hope not to see another video in 4 months with "NEW LAYOUT AGAIN" as the title.

I appreciate your comment! Luckily this is the only time I’ve restarted because of actual issues, all my past layouts worked great I just would get picky or my bench work bad lol. I do save some turnouts and I am keeping the one section still, I just like to use the new stuff. Last time I jumped right into building after almost a year away so my knowledge wasn’t refreshed like it is this time. I hope to not do another New Layout video in four months either 😂😁
