Not sure if you are thinking ahead to high school classes yet but something that I don’t see many people talk about is CLEP testing. My son completed 5 or 6 of his high school courses by taking and passing CLEP exams this also gave him college credit for those courses. Significantly less expensive than dual enrollment courses. Hope this helps- Heather Ferguson

Yes, CLEP is great!

I have started Story of Liberty. It is definitely on my list for my kids to read when they are older. I have learned so much, and it is definitely a living book. I like how it's focus is on tracing the development of liberty from the Magna Carta to the Pilgrims. Excellent book and so important for our kids to know the roots of our country.

I love love love that you are using Apologia Chemistry and Physics for your 8th grader! I had a hard time choosing between the two books you mention for my rising 8thgrader. I finally decided to go with Science Shepherd because my son "dislikes" projects but like projects...lol! #homeschoolingateenboyinmiddle school.

We read The Phantom Tollbooth this year! It was totally different from what I thought it would be, but we really liked it! Total Language Plus is quite advanced, but it's really good! You can't do them back-to-back or you'll burn out, but combining a novel study with a focus guide is a good way to approach it! ---> We are also using BJU Vocab for my upcoming 8th grader. My "plan" is to get through two books next year. You can find those teacher guides used pretty cheap!

I have not made all of my decisions yet, but my oldest is going into 8th grade next year. I know we are able to do 3 HS classes for credit per our umbrella school: Algebra 1, Spanish 1, and Biology 1. We are doing college bound, but I haven't pressured college. I'm still looking for a Reading/LA/Composition solution.

Yes, I would love to hear about music and brain development. Are there the same benefits between listening to music and taking music lessons? I teach my children piano, but rarely get into any composer study though I would really like to.

Hi Leilani! I have a question specifically about homeschooling in the state of Florida. Would you mind sharing more about how your son’s Algebra 1 course is counting towards a high school math credit? My son is 10 and is currently completing Algebra 1. He is specifically gifted in this department. He reads about math in his spare time and can’t get enough. He wants to take a second curriculum’s algebra course after this one. It’s just a passion of his. So I’ve let him move forward, but I wasn’t sure how this would affect his high school credits as he continues his homeschool education. I called our county office and they transferred me around a little bit. Everyone was very kind but I never really received a clear answer on how to move forward with this. I was wondering if you had any additional insight. Thank you! 💕
@LivingWithEve Жыл бұрын
So the county is not going to help you. Just a heads up. I will be placing algebra one on his transcripts when I create them. I am using a high school class. And that will count towards high school. Some classes, like Algebra one, will always be considered a high school class no matter when you take it. As a homeschooler, we get to decide as parents, and Florida colleges have to accept our decision. That’s actually written in the law. Most colleges, nation wide, will accept our decision. Also on his transcripts, I will be honest and say that he took it in eighth grade. And that will be completely fine.
@laurenc8844 Жыл бұрын
@@LivingWithEve Thank you so much for your response and explaining all of that! That was so helpful. I will continue to keep our records and also keep this in mind for my son’s transcript. Thank you again!

I have a question (or a couple) I have a 7th grader (13yr) and we were planning different scenarios for him. 1- start high school social studies and English classes and count them towards credits for high school. Once completing algebra 1, then starting HS science courses. And then doing dual enrollment and using those credits for HS and college. (And obviously doing all other courses required to graduate. But starting some courses now, so when he’s doing dual enrollment he’s not taking too many things at the same time. 2- starting all high school courses now and finishing up early and simply graduating from high school and go to trade school or work. So my question, being in florida can I start in 7th grade or do I have to wait till next year (8th) for it to count for his transcript?
@LivingWithEve Жыл бұрын
Good question. In Florida, homeschooler don't have grades. SO in option 2, you could just start HS now. Option 1 might be tricky. Dual Enrollment will count as HS credit regardless. English and Social Studies might be difficult. You would really have to speak with the college to see if they would accept it. But then again homeschoolers don't have grades. So you could say he's in 8th and then do option 1.

I would like to know if you used total language plus yet? If so, what did you like or not like about it? I’m looking for literature guides and I don’t know which company to go with. 😢How is this in comparison to others you may have used? Any help and input is greatly appreciated.

Which IEW level would you suggest for a student grade 8 or 9? Also would this work for a student that has dyslexia?
@LivingWithEve Жыл бұрын
For 8th I would do Structure and Style year 1B. If they are in 9th grade, and developmentally in 9th grade, Structure and Style 1C.

My daughter has dyslexia, dysgraphia, and slow processing speed. She uses IEW Structure and Style. The only complaint from her is she rather write about her interests so this year I purchased the Bible-Based writing lessons by IEW.

what steps did you do to enroll him??? We are in florida too and need guidance please make video or where can i find more information? If i am correct I think you have to take a test with the college before you take the college classes right?
@LivingWithEve Жыл бұрын
Are you talking about Bright Futures or are you talking about Step up For Students? We have not done any enrollment with bright futures because he has not yet in high school. If I am not mistaken, I don’t think you have to do anything until they are a junior or are in high school. But I could be wrong.

So ive already asked a question but this is regarding science. I noticed you are using apologias chemistry textbook. I am wondering if there is anyway extra you are doing with your 8th grader or the textbook is sufficient? Thanks

I’m adding Elements of Faith which is a workbook from Masterbooks.

Quick question and I've probably asked someone this and can't remember the answer. If I wanted to use iew for my 8th grader next year and he's never done it and I've never taught it, can I use the history based writing lessons or do I absolutely have to use structure and style. Also he's finishing up his Saxon 6/7 which I believe is a bit behind what grade level he's supposed to be at. Nevertheless I was considering going back to teaching textbooks. My kids didn't necessarily like it but the higher the math goes the further over my head. I am wondering if you've ever had technical issues. What finally made us quit was the program erased an entire year of grades and no one could figure out where they went.
@LivingWithEve Жыл бұрын
For IEW, it’s always going to be easier if you go to the structure and style route. However, you can use the history-based writing lessons. It’s 100% up to you and what meets your needs the best. That’s weird with teaching Textbooks. Did you call them to find out what happened?
@nicoles9223 Жыл бұрын
@LivingWithEve This was several years ago., I emailed them and thr solution was they couldn't figure out what happened Thing is we are possibly going overseas and I'd like to be able to use teaching textbooks as an option for a few of my kids

HI. I REALY NEED HELP RIGHT NOW. MY HUSBAND WILL BE DEPLOYED SOON AND I NEED TO PUT MY DAUGTHER IN HOME SCHOOL. ANY ADVICE WHERE TO START AND HOW TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. I HONESTLY HAVE NO CLUE :(
@LivingWithEve Жыл бұрын
You tube will be very helpful for you. My suggestion, which is what I usually tell my homeschool families that I evaluate, is to start with some kind of box curriculum. That means everything is in it and you don’t have to worry too much about whether or not you are doing everything. Some box curriculums include ABEKA, Sonlight, Bookshark, My Father’s World, BJU, just to name a few. Good luck, it’s going to be great.
