Missed watching your videos. Always a fun time whenever I watch one. Feels good to be back. I am very surprised at the cost. Expected to be quite a bit more! Top result there in my opinion. Those boots and gloves are fantastic! Thankfully, I no longer HAVE to ride in miserable weather so I'm enjoying taking a couple years out from winter/wet weather riding but may have to revisit this video for them. Expensive but well worth it. Thanks as always TMF!

I must admit just over £200 for a service on a Goldwing is nothing to stress over, it seems very reasonable indeed. I remember when I first got my BMW K1600 people were constantly telling me it would cost me a fortune in running and service costs but they couldn't have been further from the truth. Just because its a large expensive bike does not necessarily mean the running costs are going to be astronomical.

You should always check you tyres pressures when the tyres are cold as pressures always go up when they get warm. So your tyres will be a little low. Lesson over.

I'd have no problem with that cost for the service. To echo a few other commenters, a short road test has it's place and gives some useful information. What I find really useful with your data about your own fleet and the ones you get for long term test, are the real word costs of running them. All the best and keep up the great work.

Thank you for posting. The price of servicing sounded very reasonable to me. Service charges seem to be considerably more expensive in my neck of the woods. I have owned the Daytona boots since 2017 (short pair for summer, taller pair for winter/long trips). Daytona is not well known in the USA. Like you said, their quality is top notch. Mine are still in great shape. Plus, if something goes wrong, they will be more than happy to fix them (for a fee of course).

I think that is a fair price for a main dealer service, especially if you got a loaner as well to help make your day productive. Also 4 k miles in a year with all your other bikes as well as your other long term test bikes is a respectable mileage, good on you . One final thing if I could be so bold, maybe a good future KZbin project for you ( if you are not already IAM trained) would be to sign up for an IAM course and document the training and your thoughts…. The slow speed riding and anticipation plus the pre ride checks ( low tyre pressures?) are all part of the training. I’ve just done mine and enjoyed it immensely and even after 43 years of continuous bike ownership I learned much and my riding is improved. Hope that suggestion doesn’t offend. Take care Nev

I’m finding my GW DCT quite economical to own. The oil changes are more expensive due to needing two filters, but a minor detail. I’m averaging about 60 miles per imperial gallon on the highway. I believe our gallon is the same as yours… about 4.5 litres. That’s quite a bit better than my 2013 F6B. I was quite surprised and pleased. And it sounds like there have been very few major mechanical issues with this new iteration since it was introduced in 2018. Proving to be very reliable.

Like you I haven't put as many miles on my DCT Wing as I've wanted to due to Covid but have approaching 15000 miles on it now. Ref the smoothness of DCT I run the clutch initialisation process periodically as others have mentioned. What I have found is that as the mileage increased the smoothness improved and I have needed to run the process less frequently. Also I have found that fuel consumption kept improving until past 10000 miles but that seems to have stabilised now. You will probably find that the next service will be more expensive. What pushes the cost up is the amount of man hours required for all of the dismantling needed to perform simple tasks like accessing the air filter. It has to be said that it is a great bike from a user perspective but a bit of a pig to work on compared to most bikes. You mentioned the tyre pressure monitor. I have found that it works really well (it gave me very early warning of a puncture) but I have found that it is very sensitive and you do need to keep the cold tyre pressures within a very narrow window to prevent it activating on start up.

I've changed the oil in my DCT Wing 3 times and there's no separate oil for the transmission though there is an additional small DCT oil filter. The DCT Wings have 3 oil drain plugs in addition to the two filters. I found it best to drain the oil from each plug one at a time. It takes me about 3 hours to complete the job in order to allow adequate time for the oil to drain from each orifice. I find in agreement with the Flyer that the transmission does shift a bit smoother after the change.

They do a Ladystar with an inbuilt heel raise that Mrs Flyer might like. HGB are very good, I brought my first bike from them and I think just over £200 for the service was a good deal. Hey TMF will be interesting to see what the big service will be. I paid $1800 for my 30,000km service for my Triumph Trophy. It seems to be the time that a lot of owners decide to part ways at that mileage, or so the dealership told me. Here’s hoping 2022 is a better year for travelling and going on some motorcycle trips. Been a rough 2 years of zero vacations and being stuck in Canada for the riding season. Best wishes to you and the misses for 2022 👍👍👍

Little tip from a former VFR1200FDCT owner, calibrate your clutch every 1000 miles or so. On the VFR it was a combination press on the drive/sport button and worked a treat. I always noticed by 2k if I hadn't done it. Takes about 30 seconds and will be one of the first things the dealer does

I believe having someone other than the dealer do the maintenance does not void the warranty. Just make sure the maintenance is documented. I have the service manual and do my own maintenance on my 1997 Honda Valkyrie…good thing as the local dealer refuses to work on bikes older than ten years. Put a K&N air filter on the bike and perform as much of the maintenance on the bike yourself…especially fluid changes. I have four bikes and have found the older bikes to be the easiest to work on. More electronics gizmos, means more problems that I can’t fix.

For a very complex machine, I find the Goldwing fairly simple to maintain. I do most of the routine maintenance myself and it is easier to work on than many other bikes I have owned. All is simple except changing the air filter, which takes me about four hours to change. The dealer can do it in three hours but he charges $125 US per hour for labor, so that service is about $400 US +. Really unacceptable for an engineering company like Honda, there has to be a better way to design this.

Hi Frank; I changed the air filter on my 2013 F6B. Quite labour intensive, but I’m glad I did it. I learned a lot. Took me about 6 hours, but I saved myself about $400. I will do it on my 2021 when the time comes, although I’m not looking forward to it. I’m pretty sure I will take more care removing and replacing all the bits that need to come apart to get to the filter than the average mechanic would. There’s so much that could go unnoticed if broken, once it’s all back together.

You can save sooooo much money by doing your on service. It is pretty easy, if you are slightly a handy guy. You can find so many helpful videos for free or to buy for 100.00 US a set of video on how to. You can also buy Honda's service manual which is super to follow to take stuff apart. I love working on my GW and so addicted to the DCT. Every oil change,I reset the DCT. The only thing I don't do, is brake fluid flush. I let the dealer do it, at the same time, I let them inspect all lines and operation. You need basic tools ONLY. Enjoy this spaceship.
