This is the first message from KZbin on my favorite Cajun Master Gardener!!! How thrilling was it to come in for a break from the gardens to find this inspiring and enlightened, long lost friend of the virtualworld! I thought that he stopped making the videos long ago, so I stopped even trying to find new ones... Well, great day!

Donald a great video of the planter. I use one of the Earthway planters and find them to be just so-so. I like the plates on the Hoss much better but on the plate you show with 4 holes and your spacing of 4.5 inches that is too thick for corn. Of course you could guarantee a good stand then go back in and thin out every other plant and get the appropriate spacing of around 9 inches. I always over plant and then thin. You could probably put duct tape or painters tape on the back or top side of some holes and prevent them from planting seed or do as you mentioned get some blank plates and drill just 2 holes that are smaller for sweet corn. It looks as though the plate you show has holes too big for sweet corn. Just some food for thought. John
@webcajun9 жыл бұрын
John H. Hey John … You are correct, I plan on planting a little heavy then thinning after they come up. Hoss does recommend taping up holes from the underside of the plate to increase spacing. I ran some old sweet corn seeds through the planter with the plate shown and they went through pretty well. It’s sometimes hard to judge size in a video…..Donald
@gardeningwithhoss9 жыл бұрын
John H., here in Georgia we plant our Silver Queen sweet corn on thick spacing. When we planted sweet corn earlier this year, we customized a plate with six holes, planting the corn on ~3" spacing -- and we don't thin these at all. We've found that with either drip or overhead irrigation, if you apply adequate water and fertilizer, you can very effectively grow sweet corn planted on 3" spacing.

Looks like a nice planter Donald. Be interesting to see how it does. I have used an Earthway planter for years that my Dad gave me and I have been very disappointed in it. Its skips and drops multiply seeds. Just doesn't give a uniform planting.
@jakew98873 жыл бұрын
Robert, I also have been using the Earthway with the same problems you discribe. Did you buy the Hoss Seeder and does it have better control over the spacing and uniform dropping of corn seed?

As of now ,I see one add on ASAP. And thats a short bungee to hold up the stand . And for those extra hole and rear slot ,HOSS has something on the burner .I hope !
@webcajun9 жыл бұрын
Walter Boatwright A bungee cord would be an easy fix if the stand gets in the way. I know tape works but I was thinking (hadn’t tried it yet) of using “Silly Putty” or Silicon to temporarily stop up the extra holes in the plates. With that said I could always thin the extra plants…..Donald

Well Mr. Donald ,What commission rate are you getting? I went and bought one of these new planters . Now the Planet Jr will get sold. But ,I believe that could be rigged up to run behind a small tractor or garden tractor.
@webcajun9 жыл бұрын
Walter Boatwright No commission, just passing on the information. It could be rigged up behind a tractor but you’d have to be careful how much weight you’d put on it. If I’d choose to do that, spring mounted would be the way I’d go. The only thing with that is someone could plant in less time than it would take to mount it. :-) ……Donald

how many plates come with planter? I see 6 but does it tell you what seeds go with them.
@webcajun9 жыл бұрын
+Michael S Yes 6 and you can order additional plates if needed. It does come with instructions but I always try the seeds and make sure they'll go through the holes. You can even order blank plates and drill them out to the size and spacing you desire.....Donald

Great review 👍 I am a new subscriber to your channel and I like your videos a lot! Your garden is huge and do you have problems with deer, rabbits,birds and other wildlife eating your plants? I noticed you don't have a fence around it. Thanks.

I am impressed by the simplicity of the technology. It most appropriate for small scale farmers in Africa. How do I get one for field test, and how much does it cost? I work with a number of African corn (maize) farmers and this will definitely solve their problem of poor plant density, and reduce the cost of planting. Can I have your e-mail contact? Joseph from Uganda.

@webcajun9 жыл бұрын
Rdrake1413 I too have an EarthWay planter and it doesn’t come even close to the quality and performance of the Hoss. Placing the seed plates flat on the bottom of the hopper makes a world of difference……Donald
@Rdrake14139 жыл бұрын
webcajun Yeah the bottom seed plate is the way to go. I have an old set of planter frames for my Farmall Super A just don't have the planter or the seed plates. I have looked into several other planters but right now I just don't have the extra money. The Hoss planter is nice looking. looks like a quality product. look forward to seeing how it does.
