Salt Lake City has recently expanded its affordable housing options with the opening of the 144 South apartments. Located at 144 S. 500 East, this modern, energy-efficient complex offers 110 affordable studio and one-bedroom units for residents earning at or below 60% of the area median income (AMI).
The six-story building provides various amenities, including a co-working business center, clubhouse, fitness facility, outdoor deck, dog wash, bike storage room, and a 420-square-foot retail space in the main lobby. Designed with sustainability in mind, the project meets Energy-Star requirements, contributing to Salt Lake City’s environmental goals.
This development was made possible through a $1.7 million loan from the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City’s Housing Development Loan Program, in collaboration with partners such as Utah Housing Corporation, Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust Company, The Olene Walker Housing Loan Fund, Salt Lake County, JZW Architects, and Kier Construction Company.
In addition to the 144 South apartments, Salt Lake City has welcomed other affordable housing projects, such as the Paperbox Lofts, which opened in June 2023. Located at 340 W. 200 South, this mixed-use development adds 195 units to the city’s housing stock, with 39 units designated for those making 60% of the AMI. The project also includes first-floor retail spaces, a new one-way street, and a midblock walkway, enhancing connectivity in the downtown area.
These developments reflect Salt Lake City’s commitment to addressing housing affordability and creating a city where all residents have access to stable and fulfilling lives.
