New & Improved Sailboat Electric Motor Conversion!

In this video, the electric motor on my sailing boat is finally reinstalled, inspired by KZbinrs such as Sailing Uma! Nick helps me connect up the new controller and 3D-printed throttle, with a simpler and more reliable setup. Following the conversion, the yacht is now fully electric powered via two 400W solar panels. Now all I need is to figure out how the regen works...

I like my air cooled 168F Chinese diesel. It's much cheaper and lighter than electric and it charges a battery well. The dry heat is welcome.

Nice to see you again. Will you stay on the boat during the winter? What preparations / measures do you take for that? Maybe a video about being on a boat in the winter in the UK would be good?

Thank you! The motor was second-hand on eBay, it's no longer in production but there's a very similar one made by Motenergy (model ME0907 I think). The controller is a Flipsky 75200 which I bought on Amazon.

Covering your flimsy plywood with a heavy layer of grp May be a good diy solution, without having to outsource a metal plate

What is your cruising range on electric?

It would be so much better if you could avoid complex electronics. Trams used to have just a series of switches to control the level of current (voltage?). On a yacht you don’t need that fine a control. Maybe just a slow and a fast for forward and astern. Mind you I don’t know how you achieve this.

Unfortunately a controller is required for my motor, and it would have been expensive to replace the motor with one that doesn't require a controller.

Mars Electric, they're no longer in production but I think the company was taken over by Motenergy who make a very similar model

What is the theoretical maximum speed on this?

Very difficult to say as it's so dependent on the size/weight of the boat, conditions of the sea etc. Will report back when I've had a chance to test it properly!

@BethanyIvy Indeed I am also a sailor and familiar with these challenges. The top speed under low/no wind in calm water would suffice. Thank you for Your response, And please take your time it's winter here and the lakes are freezing over As such i'm not in a hurry.
