I dont think you'll see this but if you do- the scent of that shower jelly triggers your olfactory sense which is the strongest sense connected to your memory. So when you smelled the jelly, your olfcatory sense brought up that memory.

This might sound a bit nerdy but in your brain for sense of smell you have an area which is dedicated to the actual process of smelling and an area that's called an 'association area' for smells and that's where you pull your memories from :) Also, those benefit products!! I've never tried any brow stuff from them.

Hi Zoe! I'm a biologist! That happens becouse the olfactory stimulus bypasses the thalamus, so it reaches the brain cortex very fast. Besides, the olfactory region that processes the information is very close to a part of the brain that processes emotional information. That very often happens to me too!!!!

"Why does the smell remind me of..." Here is the answer- because your brain always tries to find a connection to things you already know when experiencing something new. It's the same as with these ink-pictures that psychologists use :D the brain loves familiar things because that's how we know if something might be dangerous or not. That's why many people are afraid of trying something new :) Hope you understood what I was trying to say, I'm from Germany so my English is not the best! on the subject of scents: I mean I don't know if I remember it correctly (It's been some time since I was in school haha), but in Biology we've talked about scents and why they suddenly take us back to long lost memories. Scents travel to our brain unfiltered, so whenever you smell sth it wanders directly to your brain. Experiences, for example, you filter and the ones you want to remember you put in your long-term memory. But yeah scents don't work like that which I find fascinating haha. So, when you smell a scent or fragrance again you instantly get taken back to when you first smelled it and/or reproduce an old memory from it. (If I'm wrong please feel free to correct me and/or add to this comment). Whenever I smell a certain perfume (don't know the name of it) I always recognise it as one a former best friend of mine used to wear all the time. It sure is a little creepy, but a whole lot of beautiful. The brain is such an impressive organ. Well, I got a bit carried away there hahah lovely video Zoe :) xx

Okay, my time to shine! Why does smell evoke memories? It's really really fascinating, actually! Evolutionally speaking, the olfactory sense (aka smell) is the oldest and the olfactory bulb, which deals with olfactory information is directly connected to the amygdala and hippocampus, which are integral to memory and emotions. It has been found that smell does trigger more vivid memories, and the most common explanation is that olfactory memories are handled by the limbic system, which is arguably the most important system in the brain. There's a cute acronym for the memories that smell can evoke - LOVER: Limbic, Old, Vivid, Emotional, Rare :) If anyone is interested in the topic and wants to know more, I recommend trying to get access to Maria Larsson's articles and publications, she has done some really interesting research on the topic.

After a smell enters the nose, it travels through the cranial nerve through the olfactory bulb, which helps the brain process smells. The olfactory bulb is part of the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain. As a member of the limbic system, the olfactory bulb can easily access the amygdala, which plays a role in emotional memories (it’s also where the "fight or flight" reflex comes from). This close relationship between the olfactory and the amygdala is one of the reason odors cause a spark of nostalgia. :)

On the smell topic; studies have shown that your brain associated colours, smells, images with certain things. For example when you see a strawberry you don't need to smell it to know what it smells like and you don't need to taste it to know what it tastes like, your brain has associated the taste and smell with the image of a strawberry. I'd say that you smelt something similar on your trip and your brain associated the smell with the trip and as you've just smelt it again it links to the images you remember of the trip😊 feel free to correct me on any of this I'm just a biology student not a neurologist😂
