I agree with your analysis. Calibration is adjusting a sensor output such that it responds to a agreed upon standard, and makes the resulting output of the sensor predictable and aligned. The action of installing a brand new flex cable into a device is pairing or associating, not calibration. Disabling a device if a non-critical sensor output is detected seems to be a problem that transcends iPhone. My ex owns a 2020 Mercedes E450. Someone bumped into her car and misaligned one of the parking proximity sensors in the bumper cover as a result. Subsequently, the car refused to start and she had to have the vehicle towed to the dealer and repaired for $2500. Unbelievable ! A whole car disabled for a proximity sensor.

My iPhone 6S twisted because a car drove over it. I twisted the phone back straight. The only thing that broke was the screen under the front glass, but Apple refused to fix it. I was able to control the iPhone using Apple's iWatch. Calls, text messages and WatchUp worked fine with the iWatch when I kept the iPhone on and regularly charged the iPhone. The iPhone 6S had to be taken elsewhere for repair. The Apple repair shop tried to make deals for a replacement device or a new iPhone at a salty price and they immediately started asking for information about my insurance. The same iPhone 6S battery is now bad and it needs a new battery. The iPhone's own battery diagnostics show 74% battery. When the battery is fully charged to 100% and it's -10°C outside, if I walk to the grocery store for 15 minutes and try to pay with Apple Pay, the iPhone turns off because the battery has 0% power. Cold air has a big effect if the battery is bad.

In 1985 I bought a brand new Mac (you know one of those little upright all in one machines with 512k of RAM and a 800k double sided 31/2 floppy). It failed after about 12 months. I had a friend who worked for Apple as a tech, I rang him and asked what it could be. He came to my place for a quick look and a beer. The things he told me after he took the case off was just amazing. The problem was fixed under warranty but I'll never forget the total arrogance and deceit of Apple's claims of superior technology and workmanship I have seen over the years.

@Cesarser004 Жыл бұрын
The great majority of iPhone users have been conditioned to only use the port for charging. In the "post computer" era you have no need to connect your phone to the computer to do anything. Remember having to sync your iPhone in order to put music, pictures, videos onto it, updating it or even setting it up? Now we have airdrop, iCloud Drive, iTunes library sync, where your music automatically downloads to all your devices when you add it to one of them. And it's not like there's an accessible file system so that when you plug in a usb drive you can transfer pictures, videos, audio files directly without having to copy them from the photos app to the files app.
@HavingFunRepairs Жыл бұрын
Agreed Jason, on your pairing/calibration analysis. Unfortunately many vehicle dealerships are now placing i/o type stop gaps in vehicle software which disable or severely limit functionality if the vehicle is now not brought to the dealership for repair/"calibration". Unless one's pockets are deep enough to buy programers and can modify vehicle coding.

The clamp technique can actually work wonders I've activated both an iphone 13mini and a 13pro that had missing basband using this technique. So far 100% success rate It's not an actual repair, but for data recovery of this sort or just gauging how bad the damage is it's good
@mattstorr Жыл бұрын
You are 100% absolutely spot-on Jason. A component failure that doesn't affect the safe use of a product should not be a cause for the device to be forced into a non-useable state. This is akin to forced service where you are now a hostage to the phone supplier to have to get it repaired, even though the key functions could operate safely. This issue should really be investigated further as it would be a real shitty practice of Apple if they are forcing people to have to pay money to have their phones fixed simply due to poor coding. Have you considered testing out your theory by grabbing a working phone and then systematically 'disabling' specific components until this problem occurs?

I really hope the EU or right to repair in the US will kill the practices of interlock parts in a phone or any other devices. Or force them to give the software for it to everyone how want to repair a device. I had to give a Bosch e-bike back broken because a chip in the motor electronics was dead and I could not get the firmware for the chip (and it seems Bosch is locking the communication between parts by encrypting it and interlocking it too) So the customer had to pay 800€. He had to go to a e-bike shop and the shop had to ship the motor to Bosch to get it repaired. I would have charged 100€ for the repair….

New MacBook pros have this pairing issue as well. Never been an issue replacing screens on MacBook's, but now there's loads of issues since we can't pair them. Face ID, image distortion around the notch, and the new angel senor they use won't work with a replacement screen. Earlier today I had to transfer the chip from the angle sensor cable onto a new cable for a 2019 16" macbook pro. Without the right chip and a working cable, the device thought it closed well it was open.

Having the phone brick, or disabled due to small parts failing is probably my biggest peeve with most modern day consumer electronics - not just cellphones, or apple. I work in trucking, and the newer European units can be a real pain when their electronics fail, or to a certain extent the American units with the new emissions components. You can be trucking along nice and happy, something doesn't work that the unit expects to work, and without even going into a limp mode, it will shut down on you with no warning - speaking from experience here. Would be nice to see phones be given a "recovery mode" that they can default into if they are connected to a computer, giving you direct access to the memory to get a backup of - would be nice to see something consumer friendly like this, other than - "you should have been using our backup service in the cloud", and "buy a new one".
@ststele Жыл бұрын
It would be nice to see some kind of limp mode for iPhones so people would have a chance to get their most recent data backed up. Maybe the 3 minute grace period before restarting is so called limp mode 😳. I've had cars that would detect an issue and would get stuck in limp mode but would at least get you home in 1st or 2nd gear.

Next year all phones will have USB 3.0. The USB communication is built into the CPU and non-pro iPhone 15 uses last year's chip generation. Those don't have USB 3.0, because it would have been useless at the time they were designed, since Lightning can't do USB 3.0. So unlike many other artificial restrictions on non-pro iPhones, this is actually a technical one.

Apple includes USB 2.0, because they’re cheap and chintzy. They don’t want to spend a mint on their products in certain areas because they’re doing all these hoop jumping for pairing of parts. Apple has to pair down its costs in some ways and does it by using old technologies in certain areas.

When I bought my iPhone 11 "Pro" with its three cameras as a flagship feature, hoping to replace my bulky video equipment for several purposes, I shot ~200gb at an event over a weekend and immediately realized it's completely useless. There's no way I could shoot anything meaningful with this, never mind in a professional workflow, and get the video OFF of it in a reasonable amount of time. I don't even have the I/O necessary to run an audio device AND monitoring, or any other combination of basic video loadout. Clinging to Lightning with its insufficient nine conductors rendered any "pro" aspirations absolutely null. If the move to USB-C doesn't even mean an upgrade to USB 3.x, I'm never buying another crapple again. To boot, I have to keep an old Mac around just for Image Capture because I haven't gotten an iPhone to give up its photos/videos to a Windows machine in YEARS. The only satisfying video application I've found for these devices is as cameras for "iOS Camera for OBS", and that will certainly occupy the rest of their lives as I hopefully move on to Linux phones or something soon.

I have been a mobile phone technician for 25 years now and I have never liked Apple because of their hidden mines. I think this is a giant machine to squeeze money from the customer. An inflated balloon! Even small things like changing the battery or display is already associated with difficulties. An annoying message is in red that something has been changed in the phone. Something that only Apple has. This forces the customer to seek service from an authorized service center where the price is much higher than normal. The biggest undersea mine is that after the iPhone 12, even the lightest repair is associated with the risk of cracking the display when opening the device. Many of my friends don't buy iPhone anymore. Apple doesn't think about the customer's tomorrow.

As far as I am aware companies still have to pay Apple for the certification if they want it, have to pay a $1USD tax to Apple on any lightning products they sell, and have to buy their actual lightning connectors from Apple exclusively Edit: I don't know if they're doing mfi usb-c cables now though. ofc, there was never really any point to it, I'd specifically buy a cable that wasn't thusly rated to prevent my money from going to the megacorp

This is why I never buy iPhone, there was any model since 5, that does not had any major hardware problem, most of them were not recognized by Apple. Same with MacBook's, All product made in mind of taking as much money as possible from a customer.

They do it this way so right to repair means nothing. Put all kinds of traps…so they know you fixed it or force you to take to them for repairs. Now they will be sued for obstruction to right to repair. But they will win because of money.
@FonsBraspenning1 Жыл бұрын
Why they use USB 2.0: I compare them with Compaq. Big price for old low budget components inside. As simple as that. Don"t believe the hype!

You are not supposed to have any data on your device. You're not supposed to tranfer data. You're not supposed to fix your device. You are supposed just buy new and new devices and spending money. You're supoosed to shift your personal data to company. If you dont like it, just buy different brand, so easy.

Sadly they do it on purpose, making for phone have limited fixing capabilities and such makes you spend more money... All tech has an expiry date that manufacture's place themselves. Why do you think they hate repair shops and most don't do replacement parts.

I have a question do you work on android phones

Yes. Need to start posting them more!

We calibrate Apple oem screens and batteries everyday. Apple doesn’t want you repairing their devices. They want you to buy a new phone, problem is not everybody can spend $1000 to replace their phone every time it breaks. I think the consumers are letting them get away with it. Samsung on the other hand you can literally swap every component on a phone including the logic board.
@rolls_8798 Жыл бұрын
as far as I can tell Samsung has never done anything to blatantly stunt repair attempts, and indeed, their devices are quite repairable (god bless their like 8 Phillips head screws of the same size that hold the components in). unfortunately they still follow apple in some regards - killing headphone jack, not including charger, dropping features like expandable storage, etc. still rocking a note 9 though, peak phone, but some reliability issues

Do you get the idea “They” don’t want you fixing these phones! After all, shouldn’t we buy a new one every year? I would bet this will get worse before it gets better.
@ststele Жыл бұрын
Yep. It gets progressively worse. A slippery slope that began with touch ID then turned into the whole home button not working and now here we are!

I'm getting disappointed with Apple, my 2007 Mac has gotten to the point that I can't connect to a website without getting a not compatible error,fine, I wiped it, my son wanted it,he has it in the basement and uses it sometimes for some gaming, I have worked on it a few times, easy to service, I bought a new one and it's slow,paid more for it, if I call apple I expect that they would ask technical questions, maybe ask for logs, no I get someone that sounds like they just smoked crack and this is after several calls, not sure if I'd switch to windows yet,but I'm closer

How much $ you take from the customer for this repair sir.

I have never spent a dime on apple and never will 🎉

I second the author on the point about pairing a new display. This is Apple's biggest folly. Let's ask ourselves why they did it like that? Thank God there are a number of other brands of superior expensive phones that are made to work for people with easy repairs.

The fact that Apple - the bleeding edge tech guru - uses USB 2.0. Wow.. That's.. SLOW. Might as well use Bluetooth to do a backup. : )
@ststele Жыл бұрын
Yes painfully slow! This phone took me what seems like almost 2 days to backup and then process the data!

Hey Boss. Time to pack in the boring old world of apple. Time to become a jack tech. Fix everything.

The thing is, you have strong selection bias. Majority of phone users never need a repair for their phone, everything just works until they decide to buy better phone. Also majority of iPhone users don't care about quality of their USB because they transfer data wirelessly. That's the main reason why Apple can get away with it and still have millions of happy customers. And those who do mind have alternatives to switch to, such as Android.

$1000 iphone and you bet your ass I got the most expensive otterbox and screenprotector I could find. I'm usually a cheap SOB but I wanted every possible chance to protect my investment.

Yes! A good argument to my negativity in this video would be "if you don't want to have all these problems then don't break it!". 👍👍
@Technocrat. Жыл бұрын
You think they would auto disable faulty sensors. Or give a message, so and so the sensor is faulty, would you like to disable it. But wait, that makes sense. Apple wouldn't do that, Microsoft may.
@ststele Жыл бұрын
Yep, a popup warning would be plenty! Instead they have it tell the user nothing at all - just reboots without warning.
