Great breakdown and analysis of this classic tune! If you listen to live recordings of Joe Henderson playing this in the 70’s and 80’s, he definitely left out the E7 to F7 thing on the blowing and just played the ii V7 I to B major, I’ve got 3 or 4 version where he leaves those out on the blowing. One of my mentors spoke to Joe and he definitely meant that to be the blowing changes but with the limited amount of rehearsal time during the Blue Note years, the band on the original recording was pretty much reading down the basic chart Joe brought to the session that was more contoured for under the head. That 80’s bootleg with Renee Rosnes you mentioned in the video is pretty much the fully developed version of the blowing changes that Joe intended-you were right on!

This is Devan from IG. I did get what you were saying about common tones. I’m beginning to piece melodies together with these concepts. I could really use a deeper dive into line construction through these kinds of changes though. That being said I realize your video efforts can’t necessarily be a “video request line” so to speak.
