@ItsJustManny3054 жыл бұрын
There is no “normal” on the gains. You need to match the voltage output from the radio to the amp. Visit a reputable car audio shop that use the DD-1 from SMD and they will set it up perfectly. Distortion is what killed your last sub from the gains not properly set. Also, as like a rule of thumb (sort of)never go past 75% of your max volume on radio because they tend to distort past that point and it’s lethal to all your speakers. Hope that helps man. Be easy

I run this 8" Microsub that I bought for $40 and a same looking Pioneer 4x100 w/ 2 channels bridged for 300watt to the 4ohm sub. I put the sub in the passenger foot area as the trunks in Miata don't let the bass out much without massive rattle and sound reduction. Found another JL 8 microsub for I think $120-150. Also bought a JL W6 10" in HO enclosure like new for $300. Still haven't installed it yet in the SUV.

With blowing the old sub and you smelling something funky with the new setup, you may have your amp setting tuned a little high causing the amp to be clipping. Someone else suggested going to a local audio shop just to have your amp tuned. I run two of the 10" shallow pioneer's behind my rear seats powered by a 600rms Rockford Fostgate that has distortion detection. My gain is set around 25% running at 2ohms. Haven't had a single issue and I'm super impressed with how hard the shallows hit. I hope you have better luck with this JL setup though! My reccomendation would be to double check your power/ground cables, get amp tuned, or possibly upgrade your amp.

A few questions: where are you getting that 12 o’clock is “normal” gain. That’s not the point of the gain turn. What you need to do is put a volt meter to it. Take rms and Voltage can be found by sqrt(Power x Resistance) and then set gain that way. For instance I have 1200 watts rms subs. My resistance is 2 ohms so my needed voltage is sqrt(1500x2) =49.98. So I put the voltmeter into the output of my amplifier and change gain until is says 49.98. Now I could just be completely ignorant in saying that 12 o’clock isn’t “normal” (whatever that even means) but I feel like you’re looking at this from an incorrect perspective. Gain adjust voltage level in an attempt to make them match your input voltage. It’s not a volume knob. Too much gain causes clipping which causes heat thus burning coil glue. I’m also pretty sure brand new subs will all have that burning smell for a period until excess glue is burnt off. Goodluck
@KickinItWithQ4 жыл бұрын
Dang man! Great info. When I was regretting normal I was talking about the setting on the gainz knob. It has “normal” which is at the 12o clock position. I know nothing about systems and setting amps correctly lol. I had it installed by someone who set it. But this definitely was good enough. A lot of people have told me to take it to a professional and get the amp dialed in correctly similar to what you are saying. I appreciate the information again 🤙🤙
@lemickey42044 жыл бұрын
KickinItWithQ ohhhh okay, that makes a lot more sense lol. But even again, I have a kicker amp and the way my bass knob works is all the way down = no gain and all the way up = actual gain that I have set on amp. So by my setup a bass knob at 12 o’clock should be half the gain you have set on the amp. Maybe your gain is doubled what it should be???? Not sure. But yea as far as a profession goes you can definitely go get them to set it. I’ve heard it costs about $50, but imo it’s worth the learning experience (future preparedness) and the satisfaction (for me anyway) of doing it yourself. Gain can be easily set with a multi meter, low pass filter can be set by your personal preference (someone else can’t determine what sounds best to you) and bass boost should always be off as all it does is create clipping (which will create heat and destroy the sub). So really the only thing that I would say takes true effort is setting the gain. But hey, if your more comfortable letting a professional set it, then do that.
@jbmjbm3233 жыл бұрын
I 'd like to say when you smell a burning smell, it could be from the brand new subwoofer. The coils inside the sub move up and down creating friction and when you get that friction, you may get that burning smell. Once the coils/subwoofer settles in, you get less friction and that smell should go away.
@KickinItWithQ3 жыл бұрын
Preciate the information man! Very helpful 💯
@gilbertogutierrez16273 жыл бұрын
The coils don’t create friction. They only rub when they’re blown. The smell is from the coil overheating. It could be from playing the sub too hard or having the gain too high.

@@KickinItWithQ thanks for your response, awhile ago I had a system in another car used to own and I had the remote dial up front and I noticed that when I used to get to certain level it will get smokey so I was told two things first you need to put it in a space where it will get more air check where the vents are maybe you just have to flip the amp, and second to don't crank it that much
@KickinItWithQ3 жыл бұрын
Yea that’s a good idea. I might aim the vents down in the back seat. Yea I definitely use to crank it. Another guy said no more than 75% volume. I appreciate the info man

Let. Me look into that
@jnewnam883 жыл бұрын
This ^ The gain is not a volume controller. Please tune it before you blow your sub and amp
@itsjorgieeSF2 ай бұрын
Your amp is tuned incorrectly you need someone that has a dd1 or oscilloscope
