Corn needs to be planted in a minimum of 6 rows because it pollinates by the breeze. Remember that blueberries are like apples in the sense that they need a different variety nearby to pollinate; most are not self pollinating. You may want to consider renting out any plots you can't find a use for, farmers are usually looking for a few more good acres.

When we moved last year, we gained an overgrown pear tree as well. We pruned it and this year it produced loads of fruit. Then we learned that you don't wait for pears to ripen, because they ripen from the inside out, and if you wait until they're ripe, they're rotten in the middle. Between that and pear rust, I only got to eat two.

What a wonderful new adventure! FYI, you should pick your pears a bit on the green side, keep them cool and ripen them in paper bags, or just on the counter as needed. They’ll last longer and you won’t have to can dozens of jars of pears all at once. Please try home canning them. You enjoy them all year. Best wishes and thanks for the updates and your upbeat humor. 👍🏼👍🏼

For the field, create an outside game area. Set up a Bocci Ball court, Croquette court, Badminton, Horseshoes area (with removable iron nails), purchase a small decorative shed to hold all pieces in the winter months. Also, you can use 1/2 of the shed as a changing area for pool guests (decorated and equipped, of course). Also, a little playground with swings and slide AND circling that... a little go-cart track for the kiddies. Materials and little sweat equity? Not that big of a deal, right? You can get the games beautifully packaged at any of the retail warehouses too!

Up in New Jersey, after a storm, we would all go out and pick up the pears and apples that had fallen. We call them windfalls. Just because they fall on the ground doesn't mean they're bad. 😁 They're usually at their point of ripeness. You just have to get them off the before the bugs get ahold of them! Enjoy your farm living! I'm a horse lover and we had horses growing up so I'm a bit envious of all your wood board fencing!

I just started watching and am hooked. You are an amazing instructor. I have a little advice on some of your trees. I think you’re apple (the 1st one you ate) is a pippin type. The tree looks like it and the apples do too. All of the trees (including the pear) need renovation, but don’t cut away more than 1/3 of the tree at one time. Also, flowers/fruit are bore on short spurs with buds that are rounder and fatter than the vegetative buds; don’t remove these if you can help it. Pruned trees of this family (apples, pears, crabapples etc) will sucker after pruning and you can pretty aggressively prune those back. Most old apple varieties are pretty disease resistant but the skins are tougher, modern varieties are like the ones we get at the store. Even if you don’t use these trees for fruit, leave them. They will be great pollinators for other varieties you plant. Gotta pick the pears before they ripen- if they’re left too long they rot from the inside out. Pick and let ripen off the tree. Pears grow taller and more vertically than apples and can be cut back more aggressively. Even so, both trees need to be pruned to a comfortable height for picking and to maximize the fruit spurs. It takes time- if you hire someone make sure they are well versed in fruit tree renovation. The apples and pears will get larger with renovation and there might be a bit fewer of them. New trees should be bare root and planted in your native soil- don’t amend it (the tree roots’ll stay in the delicious soil and be slower to move out). Bare root trees establish faster and will bear a little more slowly. Don’t prune new trees for the first couple years unless they need a gentle shaping (they need the leaves for food) As they flower and set fruit, thin the fruit to just a few then more fruit and after about 3-5 yrs they’ll start to crop; pears are a bit faster with Bartlett being the faster and heavier. Comice are a little challenging and can have very thick rough skin. Try to plant varieties than mature at different times- the earliest apples are the Transparent type (thin skin, sweet/tart, wonderful sauce apple) Gravenstein, good all around apple, the Pippins, good baker, higher acid, Sprys (old New England type), etc. a good nurseryman is. The best help. Fruits need FULL sun and well draining soil (the soil around the willows is probably wet and not so well drained- (willows love water) standing water will kill saplings and shorten the life of trees that make it. Are you going to put in any nut trees? Cherries? (Cherries are dicey in NE cause they bloom earlier) stone fruit can do well too, but I think in NE you’d have to plant them in a warm area to ripen. You can have an amazing food garden with all that land, berries and flowers. Oh- make sure to space your saplings as if they were mature and don’t let the goats eat them! PS: I am an arborist here in Seattle mostly retired but if you ever have a question and I can help you, let me know. Oh, also your ash trees probably just died of age- they’re not long lived trees (35-55 yrs) and neither are willows and yours look mature- check them for rot and crotch weakness (where 2 limbs grow, called “included bark”) they rot from the inside out and are prone to the included bark thing. Stay ahead of it or they can split in a storm though your trees must be pretty happy cause by the look of the trunks they’re older. Sorry for how long this is and I apologize if you think I’m nutty- I’m not, I just really like people to be successful with the rewards of growing your own food.

I hope you do get to make cider. That would be a lot of fun! It looks like you're doing all the right things with the Apple trees. It takes time to get into a rhythm. Give the place 12 months before you do anything major so you see how the land reacts and where you want permanent things. 🖖
@LurkerSmurf4 жыл бұрын
There are so many edibles to grow that you can't in L.A. because they have to "winter over". You have apples and pears, but you could put in a cherry tree and some appropriate nut trees. For the kitchen garden, asparagus and rhubarb grow better when they can winter over, but put them in a confined bed so they don't take over. If you have a sunroom in the house, you can start seedlings for celery and herbs 12 weeks before last frost. I highly recommend growing your own celery at least once. It's a revelation.

My suggestion if you want to plant a tree of some kind the Bears produce, I would suggest nut trees that will thrive in your climate. English walnut trees are usually a good choice. Another would be black walnut trees. That way in 40 or 50 years, you can always sell the wood for a large profit. Though in either instance, you want to plant them near the edge of the property, They can get a bit smelly when the fruit is ripening
