Thanks for taking the time to explain the 'nice steel, bad sharpening' on that Native 5 variant. There are certainly times where you might want max edge retention or at the very least a steel you don't already have represented in your collection.

I really appreciate you getting in the weeds about Rex 121. Sometimes it's hard to remember what the best of the best in edge retention is these days
@realbroggo
@realbroggo 3 ай бұрын
REX121 is the hardest commercially available knife blade steel in the market by quite a margin - especially if hardened to its upper limit of 71-72 HRC. In fact it's unlikely to ever be beaten because any harder and it would be near impossible to create or maintain an edge even with diamonds (REX121 is hard enough!!). Have a great day.

I’m not sure how much tougher Rex121 is over Maxamet to sharpen but I’ve easily sharpened the Sage 5 Maxamet using Diamond stones.
@realbroggo
@realbroggo 3 ай бұрын
Although the two steels are close from a hardness perspective (depending on HRC - Maxamet peaks at about 68-69HRC while REX121 peaks at about 71-72HRC), it's the carbides that create the noticeable difference in sharpening. Maxamet contains approx 22% carbides while REX121 contains approx 32%. Further, the REX121 carbides are larger and not quite as evenly dispersed. Overall result, REX121 is notably harder to sharpen because your fighting those large hard carbides - especially if you want a clean shiny edge - compared to Maxamet. It's strongly recommended that users maintain a REX121 edge and not let it dull as getting a good edge back will take time & lots of diamonds. As DCA indicates, REX121 is almost impractical but exists for those who want the absolute best edge retention from a steel. Have a great day.

@realbroggo
@realbroggo 3 ай бұрын
In all honesty, the cost is not related to the raw materials (directly, anyway). The bulk of the cost is linked to the labour and materials required to process & sharpen the REX121 steel. DCA is not understating how difficult REX121 is to work with and sharpen. (Don't get me wrong, some nice titanium or CF perhaps with some inlays would be nice.) Have a great day.

Anyone know what kind of patina to expect from Rex 121, real world experience with the steel not just a requote from a forum please and thank you? Also, does it chip easily?
@realbroggo
@realbroggo 3 ай бұрын
I cannot comment on the patina however I can comment on the chipping issue to some degree as I've only had limited experience with the steel. Is it a 'chippy' steel to sharpen - sort of. It won't outright chip when sharpening but as DCA indicated getting a clean edge can be difficult & time consuming meaning that most users usually end up being satisfied with a coarse/toothy edge. Kind of like ultra hard D2. The coarseness is usually caused by the low grit stones that you need to actually get an edge going. If you let REX121 go truly dull you may find yourself starting starting on 50-100 grit diamonds. What this does is easily remove the material between the carbides leaving the jagged carbides behind (at least in the early stages of sharpening). This usually (mostly) resolves itself as you progress up the grits but it takes time. Now as for chipping while in use - this is a definite possibility. While REX121 is the hardest commercially available steel, it also has the lowest toughness. While there are a number of factors to consider (stock thickness, edge thickness, etc...) REX121 simply does not like lateral or impact force. For example, I found that I could actually cut though staples in cardboard boxes while doing draw cuts but I managed to chip the edge when I hit a small nail in some wood (pine 4x2) I was practicing fire stick making on. If considering REX121 for real life use I recommend 1) strictly for cutting & slicing & 2) don't let it get dull - maintain the edge. As a general comment I would never recommend this steel for real world use unless a user had a very clear need for the ultra hardness & was prepared for the eventual maintenance. I personally prefer S90V as a more realistic high edge retention option - still very good edge retention, is stainless, has usable toughness, is relatively easy to sharpen and takes a nice clean edge (with a little bit of work). I hope this helps.
@velvetine74
@velvetine74 3 ай бұрын
@@realbroggo I've got a few s90v knives and it's a very appealing steel for edge retention and corrosion resistance. I agree with you about slicing tasks and what you advise about lateral force is something I have taken note of. The reason I ask is I'm more of a kitchen commando than a camping captain or tradesman tinkerer. So stainless slicing is my jam. Also, you obviously put effort into your answer and I appreciate that! :)
@realbroggo
@realbroggo 3 ай бұрын
@@velvetine74 I know what it's like when you're thinking if sinking a few hundred $$$ into a knife you actually want to use. Most reviews are more for collectors or postal package warriors. For kitchen work REX121 will certainly do the job - as long as you avoid bones or chopping work. I would still recommend S90V. Have a great day.

I struggle with M4 steel, I can get it relatively sharp on my KME using my 100 grit stone but at the end of sharpening, it's always very toothy. More than I like. M4 is my nightmare steel to sharpen. I Gave my best friend a BM super freak for Christmas a few years ago and maybe once a year since he rotates knives I'll sharpen it for him and it's always a chore for me. I couldn't even imagine doing Rex 121. I would have to start with the 50 grit beast stone to stand any chance. Luckily ill probably never buy any knife with that steel. I'm perfectly fine going through life with lesser edge retention steels I can easily sharpen. 😅

Maybe start with a 320 grit or 500 if it's just to sharpen it up.. 100 is very very coarse. S90V takes me about 5 minutes with 800 grit to get screaming sharp, and then progressive polishing, honing and stropping

Love the shape and size and I'll take 14C over many of the "super steels" like 20CV or S35VN to name a few but flipper tabs that stick out of the bolster like that are AWFUL and ruin a knife. Only people who either don't know how or never actually use their knives think that's a good idea. Front flippers are always better.
