KARA was a girl group that fought on equal grounds in Korea with Girls Generation and Wonder Girls to the extent that people labelled the three groups WonSoKa (Wonder Girls, So (for the Korean name of Girls Generation), and KARA. But then KARA debuted in Japan and they were the number one Korean girl group there. KARA was the first Korean girl group to have their concert at the Tokyo Dome.

Kara Project didn't form Kara, it was a contest to choose a new Kara member in 2014 (Kara debuted in 2007) after 2 of the members left the group. Your shocked face, when you saw Somin was a member, was everything haha At first, they had a really cute concept since they were young, their songs were pure bubblegum pop music with catchy beats, but due to the group's success not meeting the company's expectations and the line-up changes, they decided to change their musical direction with April Story, what we call orchestral pop, and that was their signature sound for a long time (and it's still really prominent in their albums). Oh My Mistake was a really experimental song for them, but it worked, they gained more attention especially internationally. After that, DSP decided to focus on the members' individual careers for some time. Naeun became really popular for her appearance on the drama Extraordinary You and luckily their first comeback after their 1.5-year hiatus finally put them on a new level. LALALILALA is still charting well even though the promotions ended already and it is for sure their most successful comeback to date.

This is a nice surprise, April’s Oh my Mistake! is just a fantastic song; very catchy, and full of variety. Oh, and I wanted to recommend another group for New Kpop Friday. They're called Gugudan. Songs I think you'd like are A Girl Like Me, The Boots, and Not That Type. Like how Red Velvet switches concepts between Red and Velvet, Gugudan's concept emulates different theatrical acts. Try and see if you can tell what their songs are inspired from!

-KARA is one of the Hallyu Wave era's top groups. Great discography (All DSP groups put out great songs), Great visuals. You can't be a KPop fan without learning about them, they're definitely worth a listen. -KARA Project was a 2014 contest show to pick the next KARA member after two members left in 2013. Some of the contestants were Somin, Chaekyung, Chaewon, and Youngji who won and joined KARA afterwards. -Somin and Chaewon were put into April. Somin felt out of place in April's very young sound, left, and joined KARD in 2016. -Chaekyung and Rachel joined April in 2017 (if I remember correctly) after Somin and Hyunjoo left. April Story is the first release of the current (and I hope it stays) lineup.

Fun fact: Somin was in TWO groups before KARD. April, which you now know, and a Japanese group by DSP called Puretty. DSP tried to capitalize on Kara’s Japanese success by debuted a Korean group in Japan, but to no avail. And Somin was only in April for the debut era.
