I just need to write another comment. Your videos, among others, made me pursue science years ago, when I was still at school. Now I'm a full time scientist and want to thank you for your invaluable inspiration. Please, keep doing great things!

You clearly put so much time and effort into this lab. This set up is just beautiful. Chemistry can be done in a very ghetto way all the way up to professional lab set ups. its just so much more satisfying working in a clean and purpose built lab.

So great to see you back!! Nice job on the lab, it looks great. That must be very nice working in. Do you plan to design or install a vacuum system and fume hood cabinet as well? Also, yes the prospecting topics would be very interesting IMO, not to mention you could still link it back to your element extraction series depending what you find. It all links back to chemistry one way or another 😉 Thanks for sharing!

Wow! That is impressive! I particularly love your professional chemical storage approach.... I recently purchased a lot of chemicals at an estate sale of an old scientist; The amount of different chemicals (together with my already existing stock) is now overwhelming and, because of the number of potentially extremely hazardous items, I really urgently need a specialized storage solution. Thanks for sharing your lab tour video.

Thank you for validating my level of geekiness. I've always wanted a home lab, but always figured it was a weird thing to do and that I could never afford it anyway. Thanks to ebay I am well on my way to having versatile chemistry and basic biology capabilities. This video gave me great ideas on how to properly set up what I am building towards. Insanely jealous of the furniture and chem cabinets especially! All of my lab furniture is second hand regular furniture, but I would like to find an affordable work surface material - wood isn't a great choice...

Way to go on the lab! The gold hobby has turned into a chemistry hobby for me as well. I've always been fascinated with lab glass. Ole Grandy had a lab in his basement and we would do lots of cool projects. What kind of chemistry are you going to perform? Can't wait to watch more chem vids. The lab looks amazing and well laid out. I see HMS Beagle bottles on the middle shelf in the closet. Did you happen to back the Chemistry Heirloom set on Kickstarter? :o I did the $750, the one with all the chemicals and glassware. I really wanted the display/carrying case but I couldn't justify like $200 extra for the case. My small HMS Beagle chems are sitting in a display shelf mounted to the wall in my living room. It's a nice conversation piece.

What do you think of your drying rack, would you recommend it? If so, what is the model/where did you get it? I've looked at many on Amazon but can't decide.
@mrhomescientist7 жыл бұрын
It works great, although mine is a bit wobbly. I had to wedge a wood chip under one of the legs to steady it. It's all metal so it has started to rust slightly over the years, but nothing major. It also has a drip pan at the bottom to catch falling water, which is nice.

That is a beautiful lab. Nothing to critique about the lab, but just one thing about the video quality. If you can find some chemical resistant materials to mount on your walls as sound dampeners, it would reduce the echo in your videos, which would create a better listening experience for your viewers. Otherwise, I'm liking what I'm seeing (and hearing)
@mrhomescientist7 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea. I hadn't noticed the echo until I posted the video. I'm sure it's because I replaced the carpet with tile, so there's nothing to absorb it. I'll look into it!

The lab looks amazing! How much were the flammable and acids cabinets? I'm slowly renovating my lab and that's what I've been looking for. Also, your lab fridge. Is it an explosion-proof refrigerator? I'm looking for prices on those too.
@mrhomescientist7 жыл бұрын
Flammables was about $300 and corrosives was about $400. Yikes! It's just a regular mini fridge; explosion-proof ones were pretty insanely priced. It's definitely something I should have if I start storing a lot of flammable solvents, but currently I have very little in there anyway so I should be in the clear.

What about ventilation? It's surprising you don't have a fume hood
@mrhomescientist7 жыл бұрын
Spooky Wizard Right now the system is "open window + box fan." The issue with the fume hood is always "where do the fumes go?" I'm reluctant to put a hole in my roof, and I can't direct it out the window because my front door is right there. Still thinking about it...
@spookywizard49807 жыл бұрын
mrhomescientist yeah I'm planning to make one and it hit me that the fumes would really only go outside to neighbors and don't magically disappear haha. You'd be exposed to the chemicals to some degree with that kind of ventilation right? Would be pretty nasty for carcinogens or lachrymators wouldn't it? What I considered doing was using an existing hole in the house, like the vent for stove top fans...maybe you could do the same. An open window would suck during winter too =P
