CBCS is knockin it out of the park lately. My most recent submission was completed in just under a month, and that was for VSP/Pressing/Grading all at the slowest tier! These new labels are just icing on the cake.

Didn't hate the previous labels but these new ones are definitely an upgrade. I also love that they took the grade 10 black labels from Beckett card grading and crossed it over into comic grading realm. The only thing CBCS or Beckett as a whole needs to work on is their customer service department.
@jabezcreed

Really, the only improvement CBCS could make from here (without just going all purple or something) would be to make the 9.8's gold like you said. I personally like this new design, but we all know the collector and dealer really really want to highlight "9.8" as much as they can. I do like how the gold and black makes a true chase collectible. Perfect book with a golden ticket label? Everyone is going to be on the hunt for one now.
@romedog4753

I would be extremely cautious with EGS. There is a design flaw in their inner sleeve that allows the book to slide. It can damage your books in the slab. The cover of modern books can stick to their inner sleeve. If your shipment gets bumped, the inside of the book can slide. I had a book graded 9.8 from them that when I received it the interior was visibly detached from the cover. Also, all the labels and books were crooked in the slabs. The owner explained that the package must have been dropped in shipping or something, but the box wasn't damaged in any way. CGC and CBCS slabs have better fitting inner sleeves that prevent this problem. Crooked books and labels can be corrected, but if a book is damaged it's damaged. EGS says there is nothing they can do because the book was damaged in shipping it back to me, and they do have a disclaimer for that in the fine print. However, the books were damaged because of the design flaw in their inner sleeve in my opinion.
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing this. I have actually spoke with Tony, president of EGS about this specific flaw, and to my knowledge, they have corrected it. The inner sleeve works now in a way that holds the book completely in tact without slipping inside of it. But let's not overlook the fact that CGC still to this day has an inner well that allows for teh book to slip back and forth. THIS can absolutely damage the book while in transit, or if moved or dropped. There are actually KZbin videos with some examples. Holding companies accountable is always needed so they can have the ability to grow and improve, and I think EGS continues to improve and continues to surprise so many collectors with how quick they are becoming a real competitor.
@romedog4753
@romedog4753 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, I appreciate Tony's honesty about the situation. He called me to discuss and explain what happened. He was polite, and we had a good conversation about it. I understand I took the risk with the disclaimer and everything. He did file a shipping claim for me (UPS only allowed the sender to file the claim). I do think he wants to provide a quality, affordable service to the collecting community. This happened last month, so it was relatively recent. If the issue was corrected within that time, I guess I just had bad timing. I suspect it hasn't been. What irks me though is that it was clear he was aware of the design flaw and still sold the product. I understand that most books don't get damaged from this flaw in shipping, but it sucks when it happens to you. I had plenty of books in this order that clearly moved but were not damaged. A light tap moves the books in the EGS slabs I received, which I can't do with my CGC (75) or CBCS (5) slabs. I checked. Maybe I should make my first youtube video to demonstrate what I am talking about. I agree that EGS has some great ideas - custom labels and willingness to certify autographs for example. I just don't trust them with my books. I do appreciate you responding. I enjoy your videos and respect your opinions. @@JernosComicsPopCulture

That being said, how hard can it be to lay out such a simple label? I've never understood why it has taken them decades to get this far. The new labels were neccessary. Personally, I really liked the current label but these new labels are addressing the customer's concerns. I reject the criticism of the new labels being too similar to CGC's....their current labels were criticized for not having the grade standout etc. and now that they've addressed that, the criticism is it's too similar yo CGC...I call BS on that. The new label HAS to be somewhat recognizable to the industry leader label (CGC). Anyone who thought the new CBCS label would be radically different was dreamimg. The new label is different enough from CGC's to be original but similar enough to appease the OCD collectors. Great job to CBCS in my opinion.

Mimicking CGC look and feel makes perfect sense for all competitors but having a standardized lipstick for the pig doesn't make it not a pig. Innovation will not come from any of these people. A book is not a simple artifact. Why can't I press a button and page electronically through the encapsulated book? The current system will age out because at the root of it, it's dumb.

I'm not going to really argue with you, here. You make a great point, and why I may not see it 100% to how you're putting it, I think ultimately you are right. And to your point, it's funny, because my next live stream is going to be called, "comic collectors are clueless." And what I mean by this, is that collectors don't even know what they want out of graded comics. They simply play "follow the leader."

Simply, you can't read the inside because the companies can't reproduce the copyrighted material. That's a barrier that will never fall. The catch 22 of encapsulating a comic book, is that it ceases to be a comic book and is now just a plastic collectible. I do, however, wholeheartedly agree that some grading company could still innovate in the space. Free cover scan pics, embedded NFC tag linked to the population report or a database of GPA sales, etc. There are ways to add on some additional value. Personally though, I just want a durable case that protects my book for decades, has a clean label with a grade and notes I can read in person, that doesn't distract from the cover when I'm looking at it in person, and has enough professionalism that I can one day resell the book with confidence if I needed to.

I disagree with you about the blue restored label; I think a color differentiation would be better (if not necessary). However, the new look of the numbers is great, especially when comparing to CGCs inconsistent kerning (the spacing between numbers and the period) and the ham-fisted drop shadow. CGC may have set the standard for labels, but CBCS has improved it (if only marginally).
@JernosComicsPopCulture

Of course color differentiation would be "better," but in no way do I feel they are necessary. I have no sympathy for anyone that might buy one of these restored books not knowing it's restored. That's 100% ON THEM. It's clear enough It's big enough. It's not like it's "where's Waldo." It's right there. Before you buy the book, read the label. It's that simple to me.

It’s definitely an upgrade but to what? It’s like Burger King giving me a Big King and trying to convince we it’s not a BigMac, even though are the same. The new label looks good but it’s just a CGC label with a twist. I like the black/gold for the 10 and I think they should have explored that color way for the other grades. Much ado about nothing. Form over substance. As long as collectors continue to prefer CGC because comic values are better (that won’t change), these label changes are inconsequential. I wouldn’t now buy a CBCS slab because it has a new label. It is clear that CBCS is looking to increase its modern book grading market with its 10 or 9.9 grade labels. I expect to see a loosening of their grading standards to issue more modern books with these higher labels. I hope CGC doesn’t follow suit.
@JernosComicsPopCulture

Thanks for this comment, Tim. I don't fully agree, but I love that you're sharing this perspective. For one, the idea that "it won't change," when speaking to the preference of CGC, is like someone in the 1980s saying no one will beat out IBM as the leading home computer. Other things that you are stating to be inconsequential are more personal preferences. There are plenty of people providing feedback that they like the labels enough to at least send more books to CBCS. I, myself, am someone who will send books to the for the first time just because of these new labels. Are we a current minority? Maybe, but still, you can't generalize everyone into one box. I can't really speak to a loosening of their grading standards, as I am honestly not very familiar with their standards in the first place.

I personally thought their first label looked good. Their second label looked amateur and remember people on fb complaining about it. Egs did a really good job with their label by closely following cgc's but with minor changes circling the hologram logo and grade. I don't have a cbcs slab, nor send books to cbcs but it's just a matter of time when cgc decides to change their label again, maybe five years.
