Introducing the new LADA Niva!
It’s an all-Russian off-roader that rolls up with a low starting price of just £17,500! The question is, does the Niva really offer enough to make you consider it over… Well, pretty much any other car out there at the moment?!
Well for starters, the Niva clearly has a super retro design that’s hardly evolved since the car was first unveiled in 1977! From the boxy design upfront to the jacked-up appearance from the side, you're unlikely to mistake the Niva for any other recent car release!
Once you check out the interior… Well, it seems that this hasn’t evolved much since the 70s either! Don’t expect to find any mod-cons here. Instead, all you’ll find is an after-market stereo, a load of physical buttons and a whole heap of scratchy plastics!
So what do you think - could you make do with this retro-looking, no-frills car on a daily basis? Let us know in the comments!

@picoman It's a figure of speech. For them, it is the most fun 4WD. I had a Lada Niva in the early 90s as well. Off road it was brilliant. And it certainly out performed a Nissan Patrol in the Spanish Sierra Nevada. The Nissan was driven by the Guardia Civil who were showing us the way after we got lost on the mountain dirt roads. Their vehicle had real difficulty on some rocky ground that little Vlad the Niva took in its stride. On road it was a bit underpowered it's true. Towards the end there were starting problems, but I had thar with a Ford Mondeo as well. Of course there are better cars out there, but AT THE PRICE (then at least) there was no better 4x4 on the market.

This is what a off-road car should be. Not a fancy city off-roader of today that never sees any gravel. Here in balkans it's used by most people in rural areas, mountain rescue, foresters, hunters, rangers. That is all telling you that this is a perfect off-road car. There is no any luxury or comfort but damn it is practical.

I worked in a project in Sudan and we had Toyota Land cruisers and Nivas. In the rainy season only Nivas could move in the African mud roads. Although much more comfortable, the Land cruisers were getting stuck after 50 meters. And by the way, the front and rear bumpers were moving on a tough springs! So in minor collisions - the bumper does the great job of absorbing the hit without ANY damage, a real active bumper how it should be. And the outer car shape is simple and lovely in the short version.

Have to agree with this. I bought a mitsubishi as a rough and tumble car for long drives with a bit offroading capability. All great, but naturally they've insisted on putting a touchscreen on it and it is utter crap, and more of a hazard than a help when driving, not to mention the cacophony of bleeps and whistles that go off at random, none of which I have a clue what they mean. Of course thats not as bad as some newer cars, I drove a kia loaner with 'lane assist' that tried tugging the steering wheel off you on the motorway! I'm convinced there is a market for simple, 90s/early 2000s style cars with a simple dash with a radio and CD player, I wish car makers would take note

The seat airbag has a simple reason: Regulations in Europe say, you need to have an airbag. But they don't say what airbag is that supposed to be. So, instead of remaking the whole steering rack to allow the airbag to be placed inside the wheel, and half of the car (because they would need to move the seat further back and to the right), they simply put one into the seat. It has an airbag, so it is legal. Job done.

I bought a 1990 Niva Cossack for £70 in 2005.. I'd owned series land rovers before and done greenlaning in them.The Niva was fantastic compared to them..it was comfortable even with the offset pedals.It would cruise at 60mph in 5th ...a gear more than the landys..Off road it was amazing...I did ruin it by fitting higher profile mud tyres,which made it unstoppable off road but changed the gearing so hills required downshifts ,and eventually wore the clutch out..The clutch replacement was to big a job for me to do as a DIY mechanic.. But I had 2 years out of it...I've owned RR classics,Discovery's and defenders since..And I'd buy another Niva tomorrow.. They're quirky,fun and a pleasure to own 😊😊😊

I'm an American that has lived in Russia for the last 7 years. During this time I have owned 2 Lada Niva. This car is incredibly dependable. It is very practical and is almost impossible to get stuck. I did a stupid thing one time and had the Ice break underneath me and I did get my Niva high-centered. You can repair it yourself if anyting needs work and it drives without fail. Still running when I sold both of mine. If you want a little bit more performance around town drop it into low and then it's not so slow off the line. You can run through the gears pretty quick and you can do about 40 mph using 5th gear in low range. all in all a very good experience with this truck. A little context, I was a car dealer in the United States and have owned 1400 cars in my life. I have owned Land Rovers in Jeeps as well as a whole array of Japanese off-road vehicles. The original Ford Bronco was pretty nice as well. But for off-road use sheer practicality you can't beat the Niva

I owned one in the early 90s. Extremely uncomfortable, pain to drive, impracticle but absolute fun and lovable. I drove it through gulleys, rivers, beaches, sand dunes, ice roads, snowstorms on mountain roads, anywhere you can even hardly walk. Nothing in its price range can be compared. It does everything that an old classic Land Rover can do, at a fraction of the price. It can climb and descend stairs. Its heater is awesome, you can bake a cake at full blast - very handy in a Russian winter. Never left me stranded. Everyone should get one at least for a while, preferably while young and without kids. Warning: She can easily lose grip on a wet asphalt road and roll over, as I did once. Noone was hurt!

Would not reccomend right now. I'm Russian, and last I heard - the original maker of Niva has replaced normal gearbox with cheap SH*T. It breaks after few years. You heard me, for some reason, the moron in charge decided to make gearbox cheaper. So he made it out of cheaper metal. Now it breaks faster. On a car, that is SUPPOSED to travel through mud, and have a ton of dirt on wheels. Like, you should reinforce the gearbox, not cut costs on it. I WAS planning to get myself a Niva, now I think I'm going to go with UAZ.

We can't. Because this basic design has fatal flaw - it has no safety. And also no comfort. And it's not so practical. I mean, if you and some your friend wants to drive some off-road - this car is OK. It's cheap, it's even cheaper to maintain and repair, you don't spend a fortune on a fuel. But. Those backseat - forget about it, this is a two seater and rear seats does not have any sense, you can throw it away with no regrets. This car also is a pain in ass if you driving highway or regularly in a city. It also is seriously underpowered. There are reasons why hunters and off-roaders like this car, but there also reasons why it is a piece of crap for anyone elses. And that's why other cars don't look like this (anymore). This is just an old 4x4, like old Jeeps, old Toyotas and others. Lada just refuses to evolve this model (because it can't evolve, needs a whole new design from ground up), but they can't cancel it also. So they just make it year by year with no changes.
@Chastity_Belt

@@user-lf7nf3kl7t EV is not end of ownership, it's just different power source. ICE cars going that way also, like Mercedes or BMW - you need pay subscription every month to have some features enabled. This is separate trend and it's not only about cars. Look how many digital subscriptions we have now: youtube premium, google one, subscriptions for adobe and ms office, subscriptions for games, movies, etc. Every big shop now have it's own subscription. Even Canon printers now wants monthly payments. This is a big trend, even much bigger than transition to EVs. We facing the and of ownership globally and we meeting new reality - we will paying monthly for everything around. Because manufacturers feels much comfortable if they have stable cash flow, it's better for them than one time selling. It's not clear if it good for a consumers, but probably we'll see in a future how it will turns out.

There was a big excavation behind the building, with ropes to define an improvised course. Crap car, but but amazingly capable in the mud, and small enough to go just about anywhere. I’m amazed that UK road regulations allow it to still be road-legal!
