How easy it to create a new woodland? This film joins two couples who have bought neighbouring plots from woodlands.co.uk and gone on to forge a deep friendship through a shared vision. We join Debs, Craig, Phil and Chelsea as they are joined by family, friends and neighbours on an ambitious tree planting day, to create a woodland to be proud of. But the day begins with an unexpected challenge.

The aerial shot of the planting area does look unnatural and more like a commercial forestry plantation. In saying that some will die naturally and leave spaces, but some thinning could be done, but native groundlevel species could be introduced. It would have been nice to find out what species have been chosen for the site, and in what proportions they were planted. Best of luck with the project.

This project is a wonderful one. However, as a park junkie and naturalist wanna-be, I see some problems. Trees in woods do not grow in rows. Plus you need some understory plants other than grass. Great project and dream!

Some trees are going to fail, some of those plantings might be hazel or other understorey stuff.

Just wondering what was wrong with it remaining as meadow?
@mumofthomas
@mumofthomas 2 жыл бұрын
It will effectively be meadow for a few decades while the trees come on. The open area down the centre will remain as meadow indefinitely. Edges and transitions from one zone to another are best of all.

Grow them further apart and at random. You need dead wood and other vegitation and flowers too or you'll have trees where no insects for birds and places for animals to hide. This is hardly a large enough scale. Also why not combine the two areas of new trees with the existing treeline?

Those trees aint for wildlife etc more like Wood for profit

Completely agree. Far better to move in lots of Bush. Old rottjnv wood and create a wet land. Half of those trees wknt grow. No sun or light on the ground at all. Waste of time and money.

@@michaelairley2015 But there was someone from Forest Dep advising them, or did I misunderstood?..? Surely they are planting on nice size area so they got advise? and so many ppl came to help...if you are correct that will be huge shame and disappointment if it fails...

@@Nitka022 It'll be fine! Lots of trees fail naturally so they'll be nowhere near as many all in rows. Then when they're mature they'll set seed. These people will have been advised and will know what they're doing. Plus, if they do coppice then that too would be great as you can manage the wood like they have been for thousands of pre-historical years and people will learn how to do a lot of woodcrafts. Those tiny children will go back and benefit as will nature.
